This film is a genuine chiller. The voices of the children are particularly scary and sinister. Deborah Kerr is outstanding.

The Innocents is the best adaption of the Henry James novella in my opinion. I had to read the story in summer school years ago and was pleasantly surprised when I couldn't put down the book, The Turn of the Screw (title different from the movie). This is one of the greatest slow-burn, insidious psychological movies of all time*. No wonder it remains so shamefully obscure though. Those expecting typical horror schlock will be sorely disappointed, and anyone in search of something more cerebral and really worth seeing won’t bother with it if this trailer is what they have to go on. The Innocents is one of those very rare examples of a movie adaptation actually doing full justice to its literary source, and its criminal how unknown it remains. * Based on the excellent short story “The Turn of the Screw”, which is itself very much worth seeking out for a read.

Awful trailer. It was not such a goulish horror film but something psychological from a highly acclaimed book "The Turn of the Screw". I saw this film when it first came to the cinema in NYC. I was a lad of 13. I wonder now how much of it I fully understood. One thing I remember is that it left me utterly depressed. I walked home in the dark misty evening and felt totally suicidal. It was a fine film indeed with a brilliant cast but probably not for such a young lad as I was.

Originally based on Henry James, 'A Turn of the Screw" novella, 'The Innocents' was one of the best and well known adaptations. Netflix is directly inspired by the film and one of the character's names is direct reference to the movie, one of the directors. 'Bly' was the name of the manor and grounds in the original story.

@sportshistorybuff3192 жыл бұрын
With several adaptations of this story, the ending is unfathomably vague, very little explained. Perhaps that was the intent of the author or the directors who brought this to the screen. The little boy, haunted by the dead ghosts on the grounds, dies, for no clear reason. All the reader/viewer learns is that this somehow saves him from the influence of the spirits. Valerie Bertinelli played the governess once, as did a gorgeously cute blonde with an English accent in another version.

A truly bloody awful American trailer. British film-maker Jack Clayton was an artist of nuance and discretion. Little wonder he had such difficulty dealing with the Hollywood system. Next to “Room at the Top”, “The Innocents” is Clayton’s uncontested masterpiece. And where Disney did their best - which is to say their worst - in effectively re-making Clayton’s “Something Wicked this Way Comes”, the scenes that Clayton directed, that aren’t flooded with vulgar effects, are testament to his outstanding talent.
