Worms can only be added to finished compost. Composting creates heat- heat kills worms.

@@hotinthekitchenfactschef7550 That is not true in nature or in my compost piles. My compost got up to 110F then cooled down. I then added the worms.

@@hotinthekitchenfactschef7550 Worms can be added to any compost pile or bin or row when the temperature is within 60 to 85 F.

Here, worms are sold for fishing @ 12 worms/$3.49. At roughly 1000 worms per pound, that's $290.83/lb. (I'm not certain they are selling red wigglers though)

My dad and I picked worms every time we went and always said we should make a bin. Im 37 now and finally started one but now need more fishing.. We were lucky to never need to buy. Always good time spent with dad :)

Usually fishing worms are night crawlers. They are bigger than red wigglers and aren't as good for vermicomposting.

I jist started but many people use a compost pile/bin first then give it to their vermicompost worm bin. I imagine this is what shes referring to. Like green grass, you need to treat that as food from nitrogen content. Whereas if you precompost it in a pile, it turns brown and acts more like bedding with more carbon instead of nitrogen. Worms can only handle so much each day and get overfed. Of you do composting, and bokashi, you can do both and feed results to worms to refine it further. Im still new but those are my pennies. 🖖🤗

there could be some eisenia hortensis between the composting worms. They can survive the same circumstances as eisenia fetida.
