There was a Marvel villain that went against The Human Torch (the first one) by the name of Lady Asbestos. She had a full body suit made of asbestos to protect herself from his fire. She eventually died of mesothelioma.

Fun fact, every K-12 school in the US has an asbestos Management Plan kept on site. It’s a public document that will let you know if and where the asbestos is located in the buildings, as well as any management strategies the school is supposed to take. Schools must be inspected every 3 years by an accredited asbestos inspector. If you’re having issues with asbestos in your school, I think an anonymous call to your state’s environmental protection agency may be in order.

My primary school (elementary school for the US) had both asbestos roof tiles and what I will call fracture plates in almost every room. So these plates or whatever they are called were two pieces of plastic holding a glass center across a larger crack in the wall, the idea was they had measurements to show if the crack had grown or would shatter if it grew significantly. Yeah that place got demolished a good few years after I left, turned out they built it on a bog, when they tried to sell the land later a surveyor was quoted in the local news as saying "only an idiot would try to build here, this land will never sell". Well that land still isn't sold almost a decade later and the bog/nature has reclaimed its former territory.

One of the little touches in the Fallout games - their society sort of "froze" in a 1950s-era mentality, with corporate interests above all. In the postwar Wasteland, you can find packs and cartons of cigarettes. When broken down for components, one of the things you get is asbestos. (Also fiberglass, but only from cartons.)

Want to know what’s worse? Smoking and asbestos exposure have a synergistic effect when it comes to causing cancer. If you smoke you are 10 times more likely to develop lung cancer. Asbestos exposure increases your chances by 5 times. If you do both, you have a 50 times greater chance of developing lung cancer than the average person. That’s what makes these cigarettes so crazy.

The question I'm curious about, and I don't feel like was satisfactorily answered: Did Lorillard know at this point asbestos was cancerous, or, how dangerous it might be? Just because they were concerned about the dust being in the smoke and that their competitors were going to run an attack campaign about how asbestos is harmful, doesn't necessarily mean Lorillard was aware just how harmful it was. I'm trying to look at it from a legal perspective. If they knew asbestos could be harmful, but thought it was less harmful than the toxins they believed it was removing, they may have thought it was a justifiable risk. Granted, they're still liable for failing to disclose this information to consumers. But at face value, the thought process, when viewed from a 1950s perspective, doesn't seem quite so heinous. They used asbestos for hospital filters and for soldier's gas masks. It doesn't seem like an unreasonable jump to try and use it on a cigarette. Of course, I don't know what additional information they had. Which is what I'm really hoping someone could fill in.
