I have literally never in my life heard it called AfroEurAsia or world island. Is it worth it? By your logic it is, because without equipment and land you can’t grow shit. Which is true, but just by buying those 2, seeds won’t magically appear. This comparison is even kind of favorable for you, because we can easily transport goods with ship while growing food without any equipment is hard.

Brilliant is going to put Universities out of business eventually. Literally anybody on the internet, if they wanted to, could receive a college education at less than a fraction of the cost! That being said, the problem with linking Europe to North Africa, by way of the Mediterranean, is damn near impossible to even think about doing. Even if you know all of the math, geography, and science, required for such a construction to even be more than a "daydream," no one with burnable income will really want to do it, because the Mediterranean Sea is one of the world's most ACTIVE geological fault-systems (almost as active as the Pacific Rim, when you look at the sheer number of earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions, that have happened in the Med, in the past 100 years alone)! In short, even if you could get a tunnel/bridge built in one of these two proposed areas... it wouldn't last very long. And any loss of life during a major seismic event would be CATASTROPHIC! In short, boats already make transition between the two continents normal, and feasible. They are far safer for casual travelers. And they just make financially, economically, and scientifically, a billion times more sense! Tunneling the Mediterranean is a fantasy. It will never be anything more than that. Besides, in about a thousand years, Europe and Africa will be connected above sea-level anyway, when Morocco slams into the southern tip of Spain, after a massive catastrophic Earthquakes squishes the two continents together. So really... all mankind as to do is WAIT...

I think it would be feasible to build damn/reclaim land at that ~300m deep ~25km part of the ocean, it would be robust enough to not be effected by earthquakes to dangerous levels, and would also give a protection from rising sea levels, and it should cost similarly as tunnel or bridges because of cheaper material and easier construction, and mediterranean sea would be usable as big water battery if there was ever a need. There was even a crazy proposal before of building a damn and draining part of the sea to reclaim land, but it was scraped because of obvious reasons.

Why not a bouyant floating bridge? With super deep, underwater weight stabilizers, which can swivel to face into currents and catamaran style super long, far from the center of weight side stabilizers, it wouldn't need to actually have giant pillars... Plus, floating guard stations, emergency road vehicles and boats in case of emergency. Also, it could be built of segments which are capable of being removed and replaced, or isolated for repair, with diversion being fully possible through said emergency vehicles and, perhaps, a ferry between segments.

Here is an idea on how to deal with the depth at Gibraltar. Only dig deep enough to avoid problems with surface traffic, waves, etc. Then connect the two ends with a "floating" tunnel. It would need shock absorption and expansion joints at the ends, but the main section would be shielded from the worst of the shaking of earthquakes. It would probably also need cables and buoyancy control to properly control its position. Even with these requirements, it seems much easier than either tunneling all the way under or building a bridge over the straights. So engineers, is there some major problem I am overlooking?

After the migration crises in 2015 it's fair to say any potential bridge (even if economic and engineering sides are met) just wouldn't sit well with the citizens of Southern Europe. Spain, Italy and Greece already struggle with undocumented migrants, a majority of which get through via short crossings from North Africa. Why would any functional and responsible government ever consider linking up with such a region? As stated in the video, there really isnt any economic advantage to such a bridge, meaning the transportation of people in one direction would be the principle purpose.
@MysteriousFigure
@MysteriousFigure 3 жыл бұрын
well, that and the fact that one of the 2 bridges would have many diplomatic tensions to deal with (i.e. Gibraltar and Spain, even if the tunnel does not go through Gibraltar itself, they have territorial waters, and Morroco and Spain, due to Ceuta and Melilla), so your only option would be to try and build between Italy and Tunisia in what is a massively busy shipping channel.
@Tjalve70

@@MysteriousFigure Morocco already have land borders with Spain. As you mention. So why would they have a problem with a third (fourth?) land border with Spain? They probably wouldn't care to pay for the tunnel though. Not unless they get benefits from it. And that's the issue. No country would pay for such a project unless it's profitable in some way.
@MysteriousFigure
@MysteriousFigure 3 жыл бұрын
@@Tjalve70 they would have a problem, as they already don't like having a border with Spain via Ceuta and Meillia, as they believe that the lkand involved is theirs, so its not like Morocco and Spain are the best of pals, hence why they wouldn't want another land border, which is more so evident if you look at the border fencing Spain has used for the territories, so its not like they are particularly open and free

@@MysteriousFigure You're making assumptions here. A tunnel from Morocco to Spain would be something completely different from having Ceuta and Melilla there. And I'm pretty sure the Moroccans would understand that.

I highly doubt a bridge or tunnel between Africa and Europe would make much difference to illegal immigration. Migration control on a bridge or tunnel is relatively easy - there is a single point of exit. It would almost certainly still be far easier, and more cost-effective, for people smugglers to pile people onto old boats and make the trip over the Mediterranean.

One possible way is also a connection from the northern most point of Tunisia, not to Sicilly but to Sardinia and then through Corsica which is just 12km apart and from Corsica, then from there on to Italy or France, both are not to far away from Corsica. Although, the water between France and Corsica is very deep, the water between Italy and Corsica not so much, wether it's North Italy to North Corsica or East Corsica to the Italian Westcoast, would probably be easier. There's also a couple of Islands between Corsica and Italy which could be included in a project. The Pros of this are better connectivity of Sardinia and Corsica to Europe while connecting Africa and Europe, which is of advantage to Italy and France, Sardinia makes up about 7-8% of Italys Landarea but has only 3% of it's population, Corsica makes up about 1.5% of the Land area of France but has only 0,5% of it's population, both Islands are also relatively poor. Another Pro is that through a connection this way you're faster at the ''sweet spot'', from North Italy is not far away from the big markets/countries, close to France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Belgium, Slovenia, Czech and Italy itself, from a connection through the strait of Gibraltar you're only close to Spain, Portugal and France. One of the main Cons are that French people might not like that Corsica is connected to Italy by Bridge or Trains.

Africa is the continent of the future, all superpowers are racing to take a bite from the cake, youne labour, developping economies, rich ressources...etc, so a bridge would increase the gains both for Europe and Morocco as it will assure the flux of people, products and ressources...etc

My (german) compromise solution: Fill up the gap between Spain and Morocco and build a new artificial canal there. Thus, you get both a place where cou can easily build a bridge and boats can still cross. Just steal all the dirt, rock and sand you need to fill the hole from the moroccon desert and the russian tundra. Take it where it won't be missed, and nobody gets pissed!

SBSTN DRKS Nah but to get that much dirt or sand would be a pain. Also, since it is underwater, there would be some sort of erosion which would affect the sand or dirt, thus altering the construction of the tunnel.

You should have used a map that shows depths of the ocean floor. 1:06 you don't have to go that far around, I think there are bridges at Istanbul. Regarding connecting Sicily to Italy: why build a suspension bridge? Use a floating bridge with a raised section for ships to pass under. That's what we have across our local lake. Or use a design like The Confederation Bridge to Prince Edward Island. Regarding connecting Africa: why build a bridge at all if it is only 3% of the world economy?
