There was an electric car called the Ford Comuta in the 60s that was practicle in that it had a 40 mph top speed and a 40 mile range it had 4 lead acid batteries that even today cost only around £80 each to replace it plugged into a standars plug socket so no fancy chargers, This is probably how Ev's in the UK should have started, cheap shopper and nipping round for a coffee vehicles then as acceptance and the infrastructure grew they could have moved up to Hatchbacks and family cars, But no they had to go straight for the luxury market which was only ever 10% of the car market, so now they have filled that 10% and are screwed, as everyone thinks of EV as mega expensive.

Geoff, I think there must be AI bots spamming your comments mostly ending with emoji's and raunchy thumbnail pics.. Regarding newer cars I wanted to say I think it's crazy this 'steering by wire' thing, where there's no mechanical parts in the steering just electrical signals.. crazy, stay away from that.
@fredfred2363
@fredfred2363 17 сағат бұрын
Nothing wrong with it when it works. Trouble is with cars there is NO redundant system like with aircraft (minimum 3). If the system goes down when at speed, there's trouble ahead. There should be an instant shut down switch. It shouldn't take 20 seconds for your PC/phone/game system/"insert EV brand" here to switch off when you power down.
@GT380man
@GT380man 16 сағат бұрын
@@fredfred2363While you’re absolutely right, there’s a major objection. It’s simply not necessary. Connected analogue steering has been refined for a century. It’s very good, not expensive, easy to detect & fix faults and it’s the (almost) ultimate safety system. Steer by wire, brake by wire is UNNECESSARY. Not only is it unsafe at the margins, but it lends itself to remote control. I think that is the main motivation. There’ll be ostensible reasons given, but they aren’t the real ones.
@twoMidnight2Green4649
@twoMidnight2Green4649 13 сағат бұрын
@@GT380man The main benefit of a by-wire system is that in theory it reduces weight. That being said, what's wrong with hydraulic systems? I would argue that if EVs used less electronic assist then they would have better range since they do not need to power so many actuators and computers.

BEVs are a solution waiting for a technology. Hybrids are the latest in a long line of vehicles designed for economy. Probably the best so far. "Super" economical and economical have made appearances on the market every time there's an oil crisis. Embargoes in 1967, 1973, 1979 then an oil glut at the start of the 1980s because of a recession caused in large by the high price of oil. To aid economical driving technology of the day was used to improve economy. VW had variant called "Formel E" a small engine high top gear with an economy meter on the dash. Not sure how that meter worked possibly nothing more than inlet manifold. As with all shortages and free markets. The shortages didn't last long as new sources came online. In the case of the Arab Oil Embargo they discovered these things hurt themselves almost as much as those they were punishing.

Why anyone would scrap some of those classic British, French, German and Japanese cars that we hardly ever see on the roads is beyond me.

Gordon Browns Scrappage scheme did amazing things for the Korean Car Industry in the UK. If companies like Hyundai had spent a £10 million on advertising they wouldn't have been as successful as they became purely through that scrappage scheme. It hurt UK businesses badly, but South Korean Automotive Industry should build statues of Gordon Brown.

You talk as though the technology on EV cars will stand still. Regardless of whether we like it or not you cannot turn the clock back. Price has been a major hurdle in poor sales - We now see Dacia with booming sales all because they are selling EVs at an affordable price. The infrastructure is not there yet BUT it is a lot better than it was even a year ago.

If you compare the evolution of EVs to internal combustion cars, the EV is a Ford model T. Back in the 1920’s , motorists had nothing to compare the model T to, but now EVs need to be better than ICE to stand a chance of replacing them. Only companies saving tax and brainwashed virtue signalling muppets buy new EVs

You can't get away from the fact that ev's carry a mini power station of energy in that great big battery. When that battery is compromised, they are an environmental disaster. A power station of energy. In an accident. Suddenly released. Otherwise called a bomb.

Highly flammable- toxic - explosive materials are transport by road all over the UK - in reality how many have caused major catastrophe? There are thousands of Aircraft flying over our major towns and cities each day - how many crash? When electricity was first introduced into homes over a hundred years ago many “experts” forecast a catastrophe. All of these things are the price we pay for progress and improvements to our lives.
