The Inside Story is a 1948 American comedy drama film directed by Allan Dwan and written by Mary Loos and Richard Sale. The film stars Marsha Hunt, William Lundigan, Charles Winninger, Gail Patrick, Gene Lockhart and Florence Bates. The film was released on March 14, 1948 by Republic Pictures.
Synopsis
The story is laid in a Vermont town in 1933 in which six residents find themselves in some kind of a predicament because the government had declared a Bank Holiday to avoid run-on-the-bank situations happening across the country. By a curious turn-of-events ten $100 bills are put in an inn's safe. Inkeeper Horace Taylor finds them and concludes they are payments from his debtors. He immediately pays off his own debts---only to be told later by his clerk, Uncle Ed, that the money belonged to a guest at the inn. Taylor begins a frantic effort to trace and regain the money, which is merrily circulating around the town from storekeeper J. J. Johnson to a landlady, Geraldine Atherton, to a lawyer, Tom O'Connor and his wife Audrey, to an artist, Waldo Williams and his fiancée Francie Taylor, the inn-keepers daughter. Plus, two rum-running bootleggers are conducting their own search for the bills. As Taylor trails the elusive money, the individual dramas of the various possessors are revealed."Money is like blood needs to circulate".

There is so much wisdom and caring shared in this story. EVERYONE should see this now in 2024. I get so tired of people whining about how hard times are, and they AREN'T. These folks had some really hard times. Most of the blame here is fixed on Greed. It was true then, and it is true now. Greedflation. It isn't the money that matters as much as what we do with it. Thank you, DK Classics III

Wow DK… thank you! !!! Great film… I grew up in the 1950’s… as a child I remember my mother talking about the Great Depression with a neighbor… her father… my grandfather, sold John Deere tractors and had a hardware store… the neighbor complemented my mother on how wonderful her father was to the farmers during the hard times…Apparently he extended their credit and helped them get through those tough times…this film brought back that special memory… ❤

A great cast of favorites - reliable character actors like Winniger, Jenkins, and Lockhart can really do justice to a film with such clever dialogue. And Gail Patrick is especially stunning in this!

Funny...usually Gail Patrick is exquisite. I thought she looked atypically drab - costumes especially. Never got her acting acknowledged. Always enjoy her.

Time for my afternoon classic film fix. Yes, I'm among those that can remember an Uncle Ed. Thanks for this new posting DK Classics. Added: Wow, tis is the best decription of the Great Depression I've ever heard, including from my parents who lived it first hand. It should be required viewing for everyone.

A well written, acted and directed movie. Obviously sending a message to people. People all complain how bad things are now! Reality is times are good but people go used to high living. Times were rough when I graduated from high school in 1973. High inflation, very high interest rates, no fixed rate mortgages. Just basic cars then, none of this fancy things. Oh well good times make weak men.

I have grandparents that were in Brattleboro VT during the Great Depression. My grandfather worked at the Estey Organ Factory, which seemed to be pretty stable during the Great Depression. They owned a house and were able to hang on to it through this time period and beyond. Because of this, I had thought that maybe Vermont wasn't hit as hard as other parts of the country. But according to this movie, it was hit quite badly.

What a clever story. It is so true...we only hold it for a little while...amazing how that $1000 solved everyone's problems. That grand old woman had a great hand in it....Wisdom and a spirit of giving instead of hoarding it for herself. Thanks SO MUCH for the upload. very timely considering where we are as a global economy... very soon, God will take it from the wicked and place it in the hands of the righteous. (Proverbs 13:22) Amen !

ANYTHING with Florence Bates in it has got to be good. At least her scenes, anyway. Witness "Rebecca". One of the all-time great performances. Super-charges script, with her snappy lines in particular. Written by Ernest Lehman. Check out his list of movies - nonpareil, . Hunt is gorgeous. Lundiugan as per usual. Lockhart always a treat. Ditto Jenkins. Gail Patrick minus her ice which is refereshing although her iciness is always appealingly good.
