The Inspirations for Headspace from the Real World

Stuff I missed or needs correcting (I will keep adding to this over time): Along with the word Hikkikomori, Omori’s name is also based on Mari’s piano, which had the word “Omori” written on it. His monochromatic clothing design is also reminiscent of piano keys. The “jump rope” in the treehouse is actually just a yo-yo. Sorry about that, I kinda jumped the gun thinking I found something cool! White Space's layout is very similar to Mari's picnic in terms of the placement of items in the square. The bunnies may also have been inspired by Aubrey's pet bunny, named BunBun. The OtherWorld Junkyard may not be related to the Recycultists' Hideout, since they are both location in Sunny's imagination. Bangs, Happy and Brows may be inspired by Jesse, Joy and Brent, respectively, as they are friends in Headspace and the real world (as well as Bangs looking very similar to Jesse). Furthermore, in Faraway Park, Joy and Brent act very similar to Happy and Brows (playing hopscotch and running in circles). The religious undertones of the Unbread Twins (being located in "Bread Heaven" and acting somewhat like a cult) may be a parallel to the fact that Daphne and Bowen are very religious in the real world. Life Jam Guy may also be inspired by the Apple/Orange Juice Sellers found in Faraway Park and Plaza respectively, since they very energetically preach the benefits of their product to Omori/Sunny. There are two references to Mari's death that I missed. In the Vast Forest, you can find a tree with a tyre swing and something beside it, and in Dino's Dig, you can find a jump rope in front of a poster that reads "You did it!" Otherworld's name is probably inspired by the shop called Othermart in Faraway Town. The SOMETHINGs are made out of clay, and during one of Sunny's chores where he sorts out stuff into boxes he picks up dry modeling clay. Clay is often used in psychology, where it's a method commonly used for children to express delicate thoughts, fears, and feelings.

Thete's the gambling machines,the Gator Guys obsession over stock prices, the cigarettes (smoke sticks) and alcohol (fruit and grain juice "for the hard nights") found throughout the building. Also, the emotion that counters Mr. Jawsum is Happy. Happy boosts your luck (gambling is pure luck) and speed (maybe a ref to stimulants or the rush of a high), and it's 3rd tier, Manic, almost feels like a stand in for a drug or adrenalin high in this context

I think you're meant to believe that. First, you learn that Mari is dead. Then, the characters hint at her death being a suicide (for example, Hero saying that he doesn't know why she left the way she did). But it is hinted that there was something more to her death (for example, Basil keeps apologizing and asking for forgiveness). And then, you learn the truth by gathering the photos in Black Space.

There are 2 pretty obvious inspirations I think you forgot to mention. White Space's layout is identical to Mari's picnic , meaning that both are inspired by the real world picnics with her. Also, the bunnies are most likely inspired by Aubrey's pet bunny BunBun. I also have some theories on other things you mentioned. I do believe the Snake to be Sunny and Mari's parents. I think falling off of the Other World, can symbolize either of two things. Either parents having fun and not paying attention to their children enough, being partially responsible for Mari's death, just as the Snake is falling, or this could imply that there was tension between the parents. I think that could be so, as Other World most strongly resembles the Moon, being the closest to "earth" of headspace and after a wedding, people go on a honey moon. I can see it being a weak one tho. I think Boss, because of his name, might be a reference to how children miss their parents. You know, they go to work and later complain about their bosses. Perhaps a child could see it as the "boss" taking their parent away, which is now a monster taking his best friend away. I personally don't think that the hair color in headspace is meant to be Mari's hair dyeing wish. First of, they are indigo, which is far from purple. I think they are more so supposed to represent purity. Omori is black and white, as he is the one who killed Mari. Basil is different, as he is in between of being responsible and not responsible for the entire conflict. And the rest have this magical, dreamy color. They are perfectly pure. They did nothing wrong. That's just my theory tho, yours makes sense too. I definitely think the stabbing is very much symbolic, both of his desire to commit suicide himself and to him cutting himself. There are many times in the game that hands get wounded. I don't agree on Junkyard being inspired by the recycultists, mostly because I believe them to be another one of Sunny's lucid dreams. Their hideout pops out out of nowhere in a matte of seconds. Lastly, I think it's worth noting that Sunny's obsession with beds makes a ton of narrative sense. He i depressed. He spends entire days in his bed. It's common during depression to want nothig more then to just lay in bed all day. But yeah, overall, I do really like your video. Sorry if my nitpick list is too long :/

I said in my own comment but I don't think Sunny has been cutting himself, he wears short sleeve shirts and nobody makes mention of that sort of thing, which I imagine they'd be hyper sensitive to after Mari. I think it's JUST symbolic of his desire to die. Also, could be a metaphor: Leaving the dream world is "killing him" because he wants so much to just stay there instead of facing the real world. Alternatively, Omori has to "die" in order for Sunny to wake up, as the dream temporarily ends.

Indigo is a strange color to me. Multiple times as a kid, the "indigo" crayon was always different. Some crayons looked definitively blue but wrote in purple. Something I don't see brought up much is all of the Omori gang look like they're wearing something they'd rest in. Aubrey a comfy dress, Omori and Kel a tank top, and Hero a pajama set. Basil is left out of this, but that's kinda normal for headspace. But Mari is wearing day clothes/fancy clothes, which also look like what she was 'resting' in. If you look at the final duet, she's wearing something similar, and it would also cover neck scars.

Bangs, Happy and Brows are 100% based off Jesse (Headphones Kid), Joy and Brent in the real world. Completing tutoring on both days for Joy and Brent makes them move to the playground where Brent in particular will be running around in circles, and doing Jesse's quest will eventually lead to him saying he used to be good friends with two kids named Joy and Brent before they started taking their studies really seriously.

The snake falling is, for one, a real life reference to the game "Snake and ladders", but is also a reference to the other two "big falls" in the game. Its a joke with a hidden serious meaning which happens in OMORI. Notice how the snake has red eyes, even though it doesn't have red eyes in the original omoriboy comic. Meaning omocat specifically added that detail. Red being code for the Truth, indicating that yes, it is a metaphor for the parents and they know the truth. Personally I would take it a step further and would say the cat and the snake represent how each parent reacted to the accident. After Mari's death the Mom became an enabler giving Sunny all the space he wanted and letting him quit school, which would have been a healthy thing to do if she actually followed through and stayed involved in his life, like Hero's parents did. But she didn't. Much like the cat, she is supporting Sunny's toxic escapism, while giving him no pushback or affection, letting her son sleep his life away. And then there's the snake that betrayed Sunny and walked out of his life when he needed him the most. While were talking about him, its should be noted that in the memory lane sequence, it says Sunnys dad bought a laptop for work making that the inspiration for the laptop in whitespace. Also the Coral Branch is based on the tree Mari was hung on. It even has a swing, like something was "swinging on it". It makes sense that a character with so much knowledge would be based on something as big as the tree itself. Omori has always been very picky with his beds, even before his depression. There's one moment in the game where you're in Sunny's house before Mari died, and if you go to their bedroom you can see both Sunny and Mari's beds. You interact with your bed and Sunny says something along the lines of "this used to be Mari's bed, but she gave it to me when she realized I wasn't comfortable with mine". Also, if IRL you interact with Sunny's mom's bed, Sunny says something like "this bed is too uncomfortable". Finally, let's not forget that when Mari died, Sunny himself carried her to a bed and watched her lying there, all dead. That's why in Black Space there's a full room dedicated to beds, IMO.

Not sure if anyone said this already, but Mari said Aubrey will be disappointed to hear Omori agreed to kill bunnies for Leafie (alluding to BunBun, her pet). I was also bothered by the specific use of white tulip for omori (especially since the description was plain and bulbous, rather than flower meaning like gladiolus/rose got) This description changes when you go through the garden again chasing after stranger, which denotes sunny as comfortable, simple, modest and perfect like the white tulip. The next bit may be a coincidence, but white tulip is used for apologies and funerals, two things Sunny is very close to home with.

i have a hunch that the reason why omori is monochrome instead of blue is because they are simply out of place and inserted into the plot. he cannot and will not cooperate with others and just seems to go along with everything that happens without providing any major input. there may be a blue omori somewhere lingering around sunny’s mind, representing a younger, happier sunny. however, this is entirely theorizing on my part and none of this may be correct. thanks for coming to my ted talk.

Also i saw a super interesting post that compared Humphrey, Abbi and The Big Yellow Cat to the id, superego and ego. Regarding Humphrey, since the id is our basic carnal desires & pure instincts, he serves as the 'oldest' and lives in the bottom of Sunny's mind. Humphrey is hungry because Sunny neglected his own health and starved himself. Then he vomits his food out just like Sunny did. Thought it was a pretty legitimate theory that ties them neatly with the freudian reading!

I like how the headspace photos are actually different from their real world counterparts. if you look close enough, the headspace ones are a little more cartoonish and clear compared to the real world's more realistic and slightly blurred pictures, like if you were to ask a (very artistic) 12-year-old to draw a copy of the picture, instead of them just changing the colors and designs of their clothes. it's a really great hidden thing they decided to include, even though most won't notice (i didn't until i paused the video to get a good look of them side by side)

I think the construction in last resort has something to do with the construction around sunny’s neighborhood. If you try to go to the left of the church it says something along the lines of “they’re still working on construction. I have no idea if any of the stuff I’m about to say is even canon or not since it mostly involves discoveries in the game files, but it seems that Boss does actually directly represent a relatively obscure character in the real world - that being the “Creepy Guy” with an affinity for his Sweetheart poster in Charlene’s house. Creepy Guy’s name in the files is apparently “Tucker”, and Boss’ name in the files has been changed to “Reckut”, which is pretty clearly an anagram of Reddit Guy’s name - many of the dreamworld characters have names that are rearranged or edited versions of their IRL counterparts. Moreover, if you talk to that guy for long enough, he goes on a huge rant about how he used to be a “gladiator” who would run around fighting people all day. This connection is defo shaky since both their official names are different to the file names but I guess it’s still something.

I saw this theory in some other videos' comment section, but i gotta tell it there: Entire Otherworld and Junkyard area is probably inspired by Aubrey's house. To get to The Otherworld, you need to climb a ladder, just like in Aubrey's house to get to her room. Junkyard might represent the trash scattered all across Aubrey's house. Spaceboy poster is also seen in Aubrey's room. That theory also indicates that Sunny maybe has visited Aubrey's house before Hero and Kel.

And considering Sunny had secret swing talks with Aubrey, it's very likely that he had been in her home before. How else would he know the name of Aubrey's bunny or how her bed (that appears in Headspace) looked like?

And they specialize in what they are for, ex. Molly is in a tutorial of basic robotics etc. and Humphrey was drawn inside there books by mari to motivate them to learn

I just realised something while I was reading the comments on this video some of the dream world areas in omori are very similar to the areas found faraway town and also think there are based on each characters aesthetic 1. The orange oasis is based on the bakery found in other mart and that’s where you always find daphne and Bowen working in the bakery and doughy and biscuit always working the sacrifical room? And it also the aesthetic is based off of hero passion to cook 2. The other world is based on comic and gaming store Hobbeez and this aesthetic is based on kel’s bright and carefree persona 3. Pinwheel forest is based on the secret lake spot that the group would usually hangout at and the aesthetic that its based on is Basil peaceful and kind persona (also based on the flower shop in other mart) 4. Sweethearts castle is based on the candy shop in Om and the aesthetic is maybe based on Aubrey’s vibrant and confrontational persona and isn’t it a coincidence that most of sweethearts castle is almost all pink? Yeah sure it’s sweethearts colour palette but I think also based on Aubrey desire to dye her hair pink 5. The ocean floor in omori is obviously based on Sunny’s memory going to beach with his friends but also I think that is also based on the fish section in other mart and I think that this part of the dream world is based on mari’s peaceful, positive and intelligent persona 6. Pyerfly could be also based on Sunny’s backyard and the memory of him and kel catching bugs together and think it is based on sunny himself And his love for insects and it also represents Sunny’s eagerness to go back to his childhood nostalgia days

The Recycultist hideout isn't real in Far Away town. If you complete the quest, it's revealed that Sunny was just daydreaming the entire thing. Sort of a mini Headspace adventure featuring more real world elements. I like to think it's just indicative of sunny still wanting adventures with his friends like in headspace, but still largely accepting the real world for the most part.

Upon first arriving in Otherworld, if Aubrey has already attained the Butt Certificate, it will be flown as a flag in the initial area. Kel describes it as "majestic" and "beautiful". just a fun fact but the first day of when basil disappeared in headspace, the only wilting flower was a singular sunflower. i’m not sure if this has ANYTHING to do with anything, but all of the other flowers were perfectly fine and since the sunflower is what basil described himself as and he disappeared it might have something to do with their memory or something? everyone as soon as he goes missing is super worried about basil, but during each day they all begin to wilt a little bit more because they all gradually begin to forget who basil is

I think Spaceboy might actually be Hero. Think about it. Spaceboy spending days in bed after he "lost" Sweetheart. Only to get angry when Kel wakes him up. In the real world, Kel says that Hero spent a year in bed after Mari died, only to lash out on Kel before coming back to "normal". I think Sunny might have heard from his mom that Hero shut himself off, or saw himself that he stopped coming to school.

The space junkyard is widely-based on Aubrey's house condition, full of trash and the TV set is also present from both Otherworld and Aubrey's home. The bunnies which Aubrey has in real world is the enemy that Omori hates. I assume that Sunny often stay at Aubrey's house due to the fact that Sunny owns Captain Spaceboy and that "he stays at Otherworld".

i think the reason basil isn’t present on the chart is because sunny (who is essentially having extreme lucid dreams with headspace) suppresses his fear, or at least is unable to comprehend his fear of approaching his trauma until it forcefully bubbles up. since the tutorial is far from the end in which sunny does face his trauma and is presumed to start grieving in a healthy way, sunny wouldn’t include anything to do with fear in his dreamscape.

I know that im commenting a year late, but Introvert said that Hero did not include Basil on the emotion chart because he did not want to include a negative emotion, but I belive it is because Afraid is a emotion that you cannot manipulate as it does not appear in headspace, and is a hidden emotion. this also lines up with his previus theory that the emotions on the chart line up with how they reacted to Mari's death, Basil became paranoid someone would find out for a short while, then afraid that Sunny would leave faraway town and leave basil on his own with no one to talk to about Mari's faked suicide

The Forest Playground area itself is a fusion of the RW playground (What with the tether ball and the like) and the Friends hangout spot (Most notably the overall size/layout of the trees). Gibs the stationary musician, who you can find by the train station, is a reference to guitar guy. The Jash name is a reference to "Jash LTD" the company that made the Spaceboy and Sprout mole arcade machines. Otherworld's name is possibly a reference to Othermart. The recycling machine, while partially inspired by the Recycultists, is also inspired by the lady who gives money and stuff for trash in the park. The "Gold watch" and Gold watch items are references to the items you can get from the smelly hobo if you give them 10$. Spaceboy & Sweetheart are implied to be inspired by Hero/ Mari respectively (With space boy's rage at the mixtape mirroring the fight between Kel and hero we hear about, and Sweethearts "Perfect" façade being a dark mirror to mari's own perfect nature. The "Stranger" you can find in the section with mari before you enter deep well is a reference to basil's grandma Jawsum's particular interest in hero (and disdain for kel) could be a reference to how their RW parents treat them. Orange joe's brother, Oragne Joe, who is yellow, is a reference to the "Yellow oranges" in Othermart. Pluto is also inspired somewhat by the Gruff guy (They have the same laugh) and in the sunny route in particular, Mikhail/The maverick (Their "anime style" fight and the way it is interrupted by someone else (jawsum/the girls) after they "Charge up" for their "next phase") Notably, this fight is absent on the Omori route- since in the omori route, sunny never experienced the RW fight that inspired it.
