Wow. That's really interesting. I'm an MA student and would love to talk to you about that if you have the time. I should be easy to find on Facebook - I made a post on 13th November about The International Sweethearts.

I have never been so blown away. This band is incredible and way overdue for recognition. The talent in the band just blows me away. Thank goodness they had such high self-esteem and self-worth to go beyond their dreams in music during that period. I am just in awh and overwhelmingly speechless!

"Swing Shift: All-Girl Bands of the 1940s," a book by jazz historian Sherrie Tucker, goes into wonderful detail about the International Sweethearts of Rhythm and other all-woman bands: all black, all white and mixed, like the Sweethearts. Fascinating! So glad to find videos of them. Thanks for posting.

Rest in Peace, Helen Jones Woods. She was a trombone player in this band and she died recently of COVID-19

There was a news segment on her this morning. I had never heard of her or this band, but found them here. These ladies were pioneers.

I'm doing research for a series of articles on women and the origins of rock, and I found this band. My god, they are so good, and so charismatic. I've learned that they were not just integrated, but multiracial, and had to fight through some pretty awful prejudice as a result. What heroes they are, and what a crime that they were almost erased from history.

Black people have so mush rich history. We have enough black movie executive producers and directors to make movies about such legendary black people in history.

This seems to be a different version of the band, since Pauline Braddy is not on drums. Does anyone know who this drummer might be?
@paradiddlemcflam71674 жыл бұрын
I am not sure, but it looks like it might be Viola Smith. Smith was white and the drummer looks like she might be. Of course, this would have been a bit controversial at this time, but not unheard of. Unfortunately I did not see a close up of the drummer in this video.
