We didn't think a full fledged Okami sequel would ever happen, much less with Kamiya at the helm. The ports and Okamiden on the DS were what we figured would be all we would ever get.

There's the general shock of anything Okami, then the realisation that it's actually Okami, after that is that it's a sequel, and the final most interesting reactions are from those who connect Kamiya, Capcom, and Clovers. Okami was SUCH an important game to me growing up, so every single one of the people who burst into tears when they realized what they were looking at during this reveal, I was with them 1000% because I cried, too. Okami is one of the very few games I played as a child where I would finish a playthrough and IMMEDIATELY start another one because I enjoyed it so much. There was a point in time where I HANDWROTE a full walkthrough for the treasure ship part for a classmate because she couldn’t figure out how to get through it, and it was enough to get her past it. When Clover Studio shut down, I had lost all hope of ever seeing a remaster or sequel and it made me genuinely sad. Seeing Clover and Amaterasu BOTH getting a second chance? There truly isn’t a better Christmas gift for me to receive.

Personally, I’d argue that it’s even bigger than that for me. Because there’s at least been occasional whispers that Valve were still trying to do more Half Life things. They just kept canceling or abandoning them. Clover Studio was dead and buried. Guys like Kamiya and Mikami were done with Capcom and were doing their own stuff in their own studios. Aside from a tweet from Ikumi Nakamura in 2019 stating Kamiya _”wanted_”_to make a new Ōkami, there was no word anywhere about any work being done or even if that was something that could have been agreed to in the first place. I love Ōkami and am beyond overjoyed the sequel is happening but before the Game Awards, I would have thought anyone genuinely believing a sequel was going to happen or even had the possibility to happen was crazy-town banana pants.

For anyone who may not get it, were talking a sequel to an 18 uear old game beloved by thousands. But ON TOP of that, Hideki Kamiya had stopped working with Capcom and closed his studio to go join Platinum Games. So the fact he left them, opened his old studio back up, went back to working with Capcom AND is releasing a sequel to a near two decade old game is such an impossible set of circumstances its unreal.

6:20 understandable. Despite all the games I love, okami is the only one I consider a masterpiece (of course when you put it into context with the era. Today it would LOOK bad). This game is the only solo player one I think has everything you'd want or need. No matter how much people enjoy Minecraft or GTA, they are good at what they need to be, but they aren't masterpiece because it doesn't show every quality needed in a video game. Story in Minecraft? Not really. Identity in GTA? Not really. Okami really is in its own league, and should really get more recognition. This game is the prime example of what should be done with game unlike what they are doing now with Concord and such. Focus on story, on characters, on gameplay. Not on whether someone feels represented or not. No one is a wolf but everyone loves Amaterasu

I've never heard of or seen the name Okami in my entire life until i saw it TGA. But watching people lose their minds and cry over this announcement has somehow made me feel emotional. I can still feel the raw emotion coming from them and it just tells me how HUGE of a deal this is.
