What is scary is the Mayor Pete is only getting better at answering tough questions. It’s hard to deny his talent. Also need to give kudos to the interviewer who asked smart and tough questions that made it difficult for me as a listener to know what her personal position is. That is the way journalism should be. Challenge our elected officials to be prepared and authentic in their response! What a great conversation! Thank you!

Thank-you Pete Buttigieg - for your honesty, integrity & intellect. It was painful to endure the same pathetic questions & statements about Joe Biden. Grasping for different answers? Definition of insanity. If this is just journalists asking the tough questions then why don’t they ever ask about DJT? Your masterful response is the only redeeming value of this interview. You’re the best!

@@RetiredILlibrarianI agree...he's so very balanced and never over-reacts. This interviewer kept trying to push him to say "something" negative about Biden. Hello: Biden is still his boss, appointed him to a high position within his administration, PLUS he truly admires the man. So why, especially after Biden steps down and has been through "hell" would Pete say something unkind or critical about him?

The part where the interviewer tries to ask “oh why does Harris have to pick a white guy” then about her VP picks after Buttigieg says that he thinks it’s defeatist to assume Harris can’t win just because of her race and gender seems like she was being deliberately obtuse. There is a difference between saying that things have gotten better in that regard and saying that miraculously suddenly we think those aspects of a candidate’s identity won’t be a factor. In the case of Harris’s campaign I also think it goes a bit deeper than just “gotta pick a white guy to appease the racists and misogynists 🤠!” There is already a deliberate framing of amongst the Republican Party that Harris is a “DEI hire.” A white male VP pick doesn’t necessarily counter that, but a pick of someone like Whitmer for example would definitely feed that narrative. And it’s important to be careful with that because there are a surprisingly amount of white people in this country who don’t think they are racist or sexist, but who also chaff at the emphasis of diversity because they hear that as “white men don’t matter anymore.” And it’s not just Republicans, I’ve seen it in Democrats in my own family. So weirdly in this case the best way to prove to voters that they are “just picking the best candidate and not playing identity politics”… is to play identity politics and not necessarily pick the best candidate. Which sucks. But that’s where we are. And it is a different place than we were 10 years ago. Both those things can be true.

100% agree. She seemed childish and argumentative, in my opinion. I really hated the first part where she refused to accept his answers about President Biden. It shows a lack of understanding about the many factors involved in a very complicated situation. She also gave President Biden 0 credit for doing what so few have before him. I've really loved her work before this, so IDK what's going on.

@@BrandyinBoiseID Perhaps it's her editors/managers trying to promote the "horse race" aspect of political discourse to attract more viewers. Or maybe she is aggravated that Biden stepped down and is subconsciously resistant to any commentary that is supportive of that decision. Or, maybe she is simply aggressively ambitious, considering herself another Woodward or Bernstein. Anyway, I did find her tone very irritating.

This my first time listening to this podcast and I don't know who this interviewer is but her agenda is off-putting. She is asking the hard questions, but her exasperation of wanting a woman VP, not hearing the answers she wants from Pete, etc. is not what I expect from the Times. She is right on one thing. He has stayed on message through the entire interview. Some in the comments accuse him of not answering the question. If you listen, he actually does and then adds more context. The overall tone of the NYT is getting more and more annoying, and seems to be based on what's good for business rather than what's good for the country. Interviewer sounds as if the NYT was hoping for a contested convention, to provide a lot more drama, to increase clicks and views. It was very clear NYT wanted Joe Biden to withdraw from the race. He has done that, so can you just move on? NYT coverage of his age and that of his opponent was totally unbalanced. While the interviewer seemed to be hoping to ignite controversy, Pete Buttigieg is a brilliant and non-confrontational speaker, good at bringing people together! The Democrats have done a great job of making the most of a difficult situation. Joe Biden did a heroic thing, and Kamala Harris immediately stepped up to the plate! At this point I still enjoy your games, recipes, Margaret Renkl, and the occasional news or opinion piece, but am getting closer to cancelling my subscription.

Buttigieg was raised by Marxists. His father was an active member of the communist party. He also spent his career translating the writing of communist party leader, and Lenin confidant, Antonio Gramsci. Gramsci’s theory of cultural hegemony is a primary tenet of the Marxist movement in the United States. If Pete Buttigieg is selected for the vice presidential candidate that will mean both people on the ticket will have familial ties to Marxist movements. Kamala Harris’s parents were involved is Berkeley’s Marxist movement during 1960’s. A time when Marxism would influence the rise of Marxist movements such as the Black Panthers in neighboring Oakland, California.

@@anthonypeterson428 here is a 1972 newspaper clipping in the Standford Daily about Kamala Harris’s father, Donald Harris “Marxist Offered Economics Post By KEN MCLAUGHLIN Don Harris, a prominent Marxist Professor, has been offered a full professorship in the Economics Department here, Department Chairman James Rosse confirmed yesterday. Rosse said Harris has not yet accepted the offer, but he "expects to hear from him this week." Harris who still holds a tenured position at the University of Wisconsin, has served as a visiting Professor here, and is currently teaching at the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica. The appointment is the direct result of student pressure in recent years to hire more faculty who favor an "alternative approach" to economics, said Economics Prof. John Gurley, who now teaches the only undergraduate course in Marxist economics. Gurley said the appointment of Harris was the culmination of the six-month "round-the-world" search for the most qualified Marxist professor available Exceptionally good Gurley called Harris "an exceptionally good teacher, outstanding researcher and one of the leading young people in Marxist economics." One knowledgeable source told the Daily that some senior faculty members were very hesitant hiring Harris, but they gradually yielded tp student pressure. A conservative economics faculty member, who wished to remain anonymous said he was "not part of the decision and it would not be fair to say anything. " He also added that "as far as I'm concerned Harris is not in the same field I'm in." Alternatives The department, Gurley said, looked for economists who espoused not only Marxists viewpoints, but other alternative perspectives as well. Libertarian economists, who advocated untrammeled laissez-faire capitalism, for example, were considered in the selection, he claimed Gurley said the search included those knowledgeable about socialist economies even if they didn't sympathize with a Marxist system.
