The Intimidating Photoshoot Of Shane MacGowan

Sadly, Shane MacGowan has passed. So I wanted to ask my Dad, Harry Borden, about his experience photographing the man. Here is what he said:
Shane MacGowan is the frontman lead singer for The Pogues, a legendary Irish punk band.
Harry Borden is a famous portrait photographer who has photographed many significant figures across his extensive career.

Great story A heartbroken Shane MacGowan fan here I don’t suppose there is any chance I could have one of those photos so I could frame it and add to my collection at home ? However to note, he usually sells his prints signed, editioned, and framed by himself, as they are considered valuable pieces in the photography/art world but I'll see what he says. :)

Hey James, sorry I did not see this comment.. I have asked Harry. He said any of the following cameras are quality: Fujifilm 67 rangefinder Fujifilm 69 rangefinder Pentax 67 He says any medium format cameras from those brands are quality. Or the first camera Harry owned, Rolleiflex, twin-lens reflex.. But he also warned that finding a quality cheap camera for medium format can be difficult as film is on the way out sadly :( Hope this is helpful!

I didn't get the chance to meet him personally so I don't know but I think Harry meant to say he was quite distrusting of him I guess!

@@fredandharryborden I didn't meet him personally myself,but he by his wife's account was very good to the homeless and quick to forgive and loved people.i know he was probably gruff and rough with drink in him but it was his natural shyness that drove him to drink in excess they say from the off.machiavellian suggests a man who manipulates other people and situations to come out on top.im sure you are right that is probably what Harry is conveying.

The photograph in the studio with the closed eyes on the contact sheet is the best shot. I like the outdoor shots too. Those fuji cameras have a lovely unique look to them. I have one of them. I prefer it in terms of the look of the image to any other medium format camera I've used, its just the shutter sounds like someone slamming a hammer off a tin roof.

I'd love to show you the picture I took of Shane, Harry. My meeting with Shane had him try to strangle the journalist I was with. I calmed things down, just a little and got my shot. Nerve-wracking!

He was on a "massive bender" every waking moment of his adult life. Please tell me what is intimidating about a lifelong drunk? He had ZERO self control; he was NOT impressive, he was a huge disappointment to many, many people who at times depended on him. Ask his band mates, who sacked him numerous times; he was basically a giant prick.

He had locked himself in a room and Harry was the one who attempted to get him out. That and the warnings from Shane's PR etc. I can see how it would be intimidating for Harry.
