A curious - but honest - question about the split brain study... How did we feed the 'emotional driver' to the left(logical) hemisphere of the brain, and receive the logical rationale from the emotional (right) hemisphere? I'm not sure that makes sense here... I would be interested to see the source material to see what explanation was given for this in-congruence if any...

Andrew Kerby! How is saying "No" to the question you ask at the beginning of your video, a series problem? I, myself an not hesitant in stating my opinions to the people around me. Which means I don't conform to social truth as I'm willing to challenge them my stating my own opinions. If I had said yes. Then it would be a serious problem.
@rexjantze2964 жыл бұрын
@@TheQwixilverBandit I like Andrew but his science references come across as more psy pop culture. There is a lot more to unpack with the split brain experiments. It would almost seem as those people who have had their corpus cut (for the explicit reason to reduce seizures) acted pretty normally afterward except for odd times when making critical choices. Iain McGilchrist explains that the corpus callosum actually inhibits information between the two hemispheres, not freely passing information except when calm and undistracted, a state where whole brain sharing and thus critical analysis (with emotion and logic) of recent decisions and experiences can be broken down and reviewed.

I prefer to say that if Discipline is slavery, as in OTHER people imposing their limitations on you, SELF-discipline, however, is pure unadulterated freedom. There will always be things in life that limits you, no matter how you look at things. And self discipline is voluntarily self-imposing limitations upon yourself in order to achieve things you hadn't the freedom (as in capacity skills or whatever) to achieve before. Again, and for, self discipline, when seen this way, it the purest and most unadulterated form of freedom. And to come back on the initial quote by the good sir @Odudas above: Discipline without freedom is slavery -> to other people imposing their views on limitations on you (regardless of your). Freedom without discipline is chaos-> Actually, in a way, it might be better to see it as being a slave to your desires or impulses rather ... and when too many people react this way ... yep, this will create chaos, and not the good kind. (yes there are good kind of chaos the same way there are bad kind of order ... and vice versa).

@@daedalusdreamjournal5925 that is why discipline needs to begin young. Parents need to stop being so indulgent and get grip. Discipline your damn kids so they grow into self-disciplined adults. Stop swooping in to rescue them from uncomfortable and difficult situations. Stop allowing them to sleep until noon on Saturdays. @@regularfather4708 I super agree with you on general principle, but some of your examples/applications are terrible examples. Kids need to be allowed to sleep when they can get sleep. There's some questionable science to a couple of your other statements in that bit as well. Just wanted to point out that behavioral science is always evolving and a lot of ideas about discipline are archaic and ineffective or even harmful, which doesn't mean discipline is bad (it's good) but it does mean people need to be scientifically minded and forward-thinking about how they apply the idea.

@@several_revolution5317 If you provide 'people who truly want to know' strong enough evidences and solid reasons that oppose their original thought, they will re-evaluate what they know. On the other hands, people who want to believe, once they believe in something, it's hard to change that believe even when you have a strong evidence against that believe. Knowledge is changed by facts. Believe is changed by wills. So I think "knowing" and "believing" are different. For a simple example: "Dogs can not fly." We all know that this is true according to a bunch of evidences such as no one has ever seen any dogs fly in the sky on it own or dogs don't have something like wings. Although this might be wrong, dogs might have been fooling us around or they can fly on another planet, but all the evidences combine with our best reasoning ability tell us that dogs can not fly. This is quite a clear fact though, knowing and believing tend to conflict when things get less clear. I'm surrounded by people who believe that their ancestors can help them to get rich by telling them the jackpot prize number for the next lottery... They even use baby power to rub parts of some big trees in our neighbor to find the numbers, I'm like come on people. PS. Always welcome to discuss with you guys. And I think this is a good channel.

I'd even say that in those instances that I do that, instead of being excluded from the group, we have a meaningful discussion about things and try to learn from each other - which in turn only makes our friendship grow stronger. Sure, we do have lots of overlapping opinions; that's why they are my friends. But discussions (not arguments) about opinions are such a regular occurrence that we even have a separate group chat dedicated to it. To be honest though, this only applies to the people I call my "friends". If I'm talking to coworkers or my family, I regularly hold back my opinions because I know that they hold opposite beliefs. So I certainly still have room to grow when it comes to this. I tend to avoid conflicts, especially with my dad, because a lot of our opinions are fundamentally different and he's the kind of person who believes very strongly in their opinion. I'm not very close to my family, so I never learned how to properly have these kinds of conversations with them...

I don't disagree with the information of this video, however I kind of disagree with the result. The more you question things outside of societal norms may make you "free," or some people say "woke," but that comes with a price as well. If you see money or the things that society in general do as pointless, you still have to participate, or else you will be homeless. By participating, and knowing it's pointless you end up living a lie. And even if you know it's pointless, you still are human and have feelings of rejection, being less than another, etc. Being Galileo could be great after you're dead, but he must've lived a hard life. And how many Galileo's out there went against society and never made it as heroes. We are social creatures with a strong sense of community that has been in our nature for millions of years. To abandon this nature may allow free thinking, but could also lead us down a path of unhappiness. Unfortunately, once you start going down this path, there is no stopping. Sometimes ignorance is bliss.
@josephmileyka21844 жыл бұрын
The fact that folks get upset when pushed on these societal beliefs, indicates that a defensive reaction is triggered, and on some level theyre aware of the discrepancy. You may indeed fit in , but you're taking on a false shape to do it. Philosophically, the question is posed, That if one does not live as themselves, did they live well? Stoicism, doesn't contend that a life of ease is the one most prized, valued, or imbued with meaning. Consider Clarence Henderson's contribution, to the development of civil rights,, his, is likely a considerably different sense of himself , than John Belushi.
@halseykale99304 жыл бұрын
Ignorance is definitely bliss. And this adds to society being a prison, both physical and mental: you have to pretend to not know firstly to yourself. We are in a dark cage: if one never gets far enough (read it metaphorically: "far from societal truths he was grown to accept") to touch the bars, one might as well think he's free.

Believe me the brainwashing of movies and media in general is more then just hijacking. Do your research, just on youtube you'll find how we are being manipulated with subliminal messages.

I'm not afraid to express any of my opinions around my peers, not because all of my peers have the same opinions as me, they don't. It's because I know I can have an open discussion with my friends. If you're afraid to express any opinion that's not the same as your friends then that's the real issue.

Agreed with 99% of your video, apart from the point on conspiracies where you throw people under the bus who are constantly questioning and going against society as well as the mainstreams narrative

Sadly, I think many people would watch this and subconsciously realize that being a sheep is far safer, far easier than the alternative (at least in the short term it may be). The safest/easiest path isn’t always necessarily the best one though.

My peers just don’t shun people for having different beliefs. I have no reason to hide my beliefs, because I won’t be shunned for them.
@marianovelasquez42644 жыл бұрын
One’s ‘beliefs’ are different from One’s ‘knowing’. Just as One’s ‘faith’’ is different from One’s ‘knowledge’. Your claim of people’s beliefs only existing to save us from societal shame or rejection, only covers a small portion of the larger Truth. Be glad on your Path to the truth, as many have yet to step foot. Peace to you brother

After watching this there's one concept that I don't get: with Andrews question of saying No to stating your opinions to your peers as an bad thing how so? By saying No you're not hesitant to express your opinions you're challenging the opinions of what people say to you be that societal concepts or your own. You bring a different view point to a discussion about something. That's how communication, understanding and growth occurs. Andrew mentions about Galileo expressing a different opinion and he got shunned for expression that opinion. That example appears to go against the question at the start if the video?

We care what others think of us. Great survival instinct but shitty attribute in the modern world. We depend on nobody if we really want to! Okay, some people are not, but most of us are! Eastern Philosophie is a really good solution of this problem. Buddhism, Taoism, meditation... Live in the present and don't think about other people or about stuff from the past. Appreciate the things around you and do that stuff that you do, right now, as well as you can! Focus brother! Focus Sister! It's easier said than done but everyone can do that! You just need to want it! If you want something, you'll find a way! Have a good day!

I am NOT hesitant to tell someone my beliefs, but for a different reason. I have come to accept people who disagree with me, if they wish to shun me for speaking my mind they show how uncivil the are. Anyone who is willing to listen to someone else's beliefs while not letting their own cloud their judgment are the ones who are truly civilized. I don't wish to affiliate with anyone who doesn't listen and acts like a child. If I end up dying alone because of it, let it be done. You don't have to agree with someone to get along with them.
