This episode covers the Defense of Harbin, part of the Japanese invasion of Manchuria 1931-1932.
In 1931, Japan initiated an unofficial war against China, invading Manchuria and seeking alliances with local leaders. Despite Chiang Kai-shek's orders to refrain from resistance, General Ma Zhanshan opposed the Japanese during the Jiangqiao campaign. Recognizing Ma's growing reputation, the Japanese attempted to persuade him to cooperate. However, Ma remained loyal to the Nanjing government.
Simultaneously, General Ding Chao resisted Japanese control in Harbin, organizing the Kirin Self-defense Army. With limited support from Zhang Xueliang and Chiang Kai-shek, the Chinese resistance faced escalating Japanese aggression. In January 1932, the Japanese ordered General Xi Qiu to seize Harbin and attack Ma's headquarters in Hailun.
The Kirin Self-defense Corps, under Ding Chao's leadership, fortified Harbin, repelling Xi Qia's forces. Japanese attempts to intervene were hindered by severe weather and Soviet opposition. Despite Ting Chao's efforts, Harbin fell to the Japanese after a fierce battle.
Following Ting Chao's defeat, Ma Zhanshan surrendered, receiving a prominent position within the newly established Manchukuo regime. With Ting Chao's offer to cease hostilities, Chinese resistance in Manchuria ended, and on March 1st, 1932, Puyi was crowned as the ruler of Manchukuo.
