the invention of the fork is such a nice play because that’s a tool people use to eat in a polite way. eating is a bodily function like excretion but we transform it into a social activity - we use it to form connections with other people. the invention of the fork is just a part of building this beautiful palace of social constructs, and lying, sweetly and gently, is one of its bedrocks

in the first date scene, where they sit down at the table, you can catch the lady lie to the waitress with her shoulders and eyes

watching him walk to the office, it stands out how many people he interacts with. that’s probably because it’s poorly written, and not because it’s a lesson about how honesty helps you connect with more people

the first half of these movie keeps belabouring the point that lies are a tool that can help steer a social interaction into a different positive direction that would benefit both parties. it’s extremely fascinating to think about bit it gets repetitive and exhausting by the time he has that terrible conversation with his grandma

of course gervais is a hack writer because this is not a world that developed without lies having ever existed, because that’s an impossibility, and the world is just a series of dumb skits about what if lies didn’t exist now. writing this because the movie gets me in the mood to say obvious things out loud
