RaynorsProphet "I could not love thee, dear, so much, Loved I not honor more." - Lovelace. Dickens was a real stinker in his personal life. Since learning more about him (beyond his writings), I have lost much of my former respect for the man.

so who should be emphatic towards the wife or the mistress. I generally don't like these drama because they glorifies cheating making the young girl look like angel while the wife a dragon lady.

people’s relationships are complicated, at Charles Dickens times, there are wives that can terrify anyone just like certain times, the mistresses are the villains, women and men are complicated creatures, you can’t tell if you don’t know them personally

"The invisible woman" is the woman over 40 in films. Look at this case: Kristin Scott Thomas played the character that was the lover of the character that Ralph Fiennes played in the English Patient. Now, Thomas is playing the MOTHER of the character that is the lover of Dİckens, played by Fiennes. So Fiennes can still play a lover, but Thomas plays the mother of the main female romantic character? That is the real invisibility. By the way, Thomas still plays romantic main characters in French films, this invisibility seems to be happening in English language films. (She also played an old woman in Easy Virtue while Colin Firth, playing her husband was a romantic lead. Colin Firth was also playing her husband in English Patient!).

+yediveren771 You make a fair point but in this case as the story is by account based on true events. so the age difference between the man and woman is justified, they needed a young actresses for Nelly. It's harder to justify in a film like Oblivion, Tom Cruise is 53 now but his love interests in Oblivion are both about 20 years younger than him. Once an actresses gets over 40 they start casting her as a witch, Angelina Jolie (Maleficent), Julia Robert's (Mirror Mirror), Famke Janssen (Hansel and Gretel). All the Oscar films nominated for Best Picture last year were all about complex troubled men, Birdman, American Sniper, The Theory of Everything, The Imitation Game, and others...Hollywood doesn't really know how to write a part for women over 40 anymore. All About Eve saw this problem coming over 60 years ago...

Late reply, but still: I find it especially disgusting if a grown man's mother is played by a woman who looks more of an age to be his sister. There have been brilliant, fascinating female characters which did not need to be sexy, so it's not that it's not possible. Quite frankly: this ties into the Epstein problem. For a man who enjoys having power over beautiful women, what's the point in giving a job and money to a woman whom he doesn't want to grope? Or worse? I don't think that's the only reason, but when it comes to female characters, Hollywood seems to actively try to be stuck in the 1950ies. Or the 1850ies.

Read a biography of Dickens with caution, because regardless of the man's divine talent you might just finish the book strongly disliking him. As a person he was frankly shallow unless he was suffering and that suffering was usually selfish and self-induced. Even his kindest biographers concede that he was verbally abusive to his wife and cruel to his children.

Citadel1221 Yes, he was incredibly spiteful to his wife who confidently was no fool and she herself had a successful cookery book published. Charles had the cheek and audacity to blame her totally for their large family! Excuse me! He had lots to do with that! It's also well known now that he had a thing for very young girls and could not stand older women, although it was ok for him to age and be old! Dirty old goat Dickens!

Never knew that. He's just like russian writer Lev Tolstoy then. He also was terrible to his wife, Sofia, he abused her and made her to give birth to 13 kids though doctors advised against it as she had fragile health. I've never liked his books at school even before I learned this facts, and the thing that I could not stand Dickens' books as well is a funny coincidence. Two preachers who never practiced what they preached.

In reality Dickens would constantly prey on the much younger relatives of his wives, move on to a younger girl when the current one got older, abandon his children and verbally abuse his wife publicly. I know it's a fictitious film but I just can't get passed the dislike for the actual person, it's the same problem i have with Pocahontas.

A wife is also responsible to keep the romance in a marriage going....If she fails that way, a man, no matter how faithful or steadfast will lose interest over time. The same is true if you reverse the roles.

Romance or sex? - it isn't the same, a marriage doesn't 'need' sex but does need love & consideration. And - in general - men are far, far more fickle. Wonder how romantic Mrs Dickens felt after 10 kids & a husband who judges on looks/shape & age. Ideally you'd be with someone who's sex drive matched; no pestering, blaming, but I suspect that is rare. :(

I dont see all the point of hatred. No one is perfect, we all make our mistakes and so did Dickens. This is just one incident of his life and both women were in love with him. He was just a human like us and so he made his own decisions as well. He followed his heart because Nelly was enthusiastic with his work that made him feel valuable in the eyes of Nelly.

Of course divorce was around back then and many of his friend also kept two families, that everyone knew about. He did not, because he did not want his image tarnished. He was the epitome of a "family man". An affair with an 18 year old ACTRESS, of all people would have ruined him. Do you really believe Ellen (Nelly) even loved him? Years later, she told a confidante that she "loathed the intimacy" with the great writer. Not the words of a lover, are they? Also, Catherine was not always heavy and dull, she was bright and charming, by all accounts and only after continuous pregnancies, did she lose her "assets". He was an ass, plain and simple, but I still like to read his books.

The story here is simple he is a horney man who got bored with his wife find a yough stupid fan girl to pork the end there is much more intersting stories in histories to tell why so many movies choose the ones about affairs and cheaters for god sake thats not original anymore it have been done millions of times find a new subject

What need to be understood is that originally Dicken's wife played around with his feelings a lot. He had his doubts about their marriage since before the marriage itself. They were both pretty miserable together, though he did love her once... It is merely that he loved her before she loved him, if she ever did love him, and if she did love him, then at least, it was way too late.

You don`t understand where I am coming from. Women should never lower themselves to be just a mistress when in fact they can me wives, partners etc. No need to sacrifice this for whatever the reason maybe. Also in these types of situations usually the wive becomes the victim. For this reason women should not do this to each other.

🙄 -- All these sanctimonious commenters must feel extremely threatened in their own relationships if they think a movie about an historical infidelity is too dangerous to even watch. I mean, Jesus, how precarious IS your marriage right now if it can't handle that? I hate to break it to you, but affairs are very common, and they've produced a lot of actual children (and ART) throughout the ages. If you want to ignore every single, nonjudgmental storyline that involves this, you're going to be denying a good chunk of history, literature, music and fine art, as well as the existence of many, many people.
@TheMercury-13
@TheMercury-13 4 жыл бұрын
@@starshake8998 Depends if it depicts some of the pain caused by that infidelity, doesn't hide all - if not it isn't historical but tedious fiction. This film mentions it; hurt wife & kids, & love interest Nelly calls Dickens cruel to his wife. It doesn't portray him as selfish as he allegedly was with those closest but the genre needs characters which a mass film audience can engage with for 2 hours or so, not focus on just their flaws.

Doesn't come across as a love story tho'; Nelly seems uninterested most of the time. *'I hate to break it to you' but not everyone is married/paired, or even wanting to be; your theory of comments being based on premise doesn't work. 😉

How sad. Despite of many comments here I'd say that the name of the movie to my mind is tremendously correct. She is the loving, suffering and in the shadow of her famous partner. It is a very sad situaion always and if you think of it- nowadays people can get divorced- at that time the couldn't. Falling in love is not a crime, it's something you no way can control. Have some compassion, don't act like a jelous angry fool. I had compassion for those who fell in love wih my partner and could face the fact that no love can be eternal. Loving someone is wishing happiness for him. Jelousy is something when you can't bear the fact that the one whom you love can be happy...without you.

Daliya Vector Dickens got divorce a year later, it was legal, but not well seen .. I guess it was a hard situation for the three if them, after all Dickens had 10 kids with Catherine, but then fell for a new girl.

Thank you very much for your very wise comment, Daliya Vector!

Sadly men are incapable of eternal love and will fall out of love eventually (usually falling&leaving for younger girls), while women tend and dream to love and be loved forever - I have seen that so many times in this world. There were times when there was platonic love between people: loving and admiring each other from far, but never crossing that line. That is called morals: norms and values. Indeed it is not a crime to fall in love. However, cheating and dumping your devoted wife is immoral and a crime of immorality because you BREAK the sacrament of marriage and your PROMISE: ‘’to love&cherish until death do us apart’’. We must remember that behind every great man there is a great woman: loving, caring&devoted wife+ friend who doesn’t deserve to be used, cheated, betrayed and abandoned when she is not needed anymore which is truly unfair. I don’t care for this movie, but wish there was one made about those wives that sacrifice their lives for their husbands&families but never really appreciated for all their sacrifice instead being taken for granted. Nowadays we do have a choice to marry or not to marry (or divorce), but if you DO marry then please don’t desecrate the sacrament of marriage if you incapable to keep your promise.

Interesting...I love Ralph Fiennes, so I'm at least interested. I also love films about authors; I just wish they had made one about the inspirations for his famed social commentary-- i.e. his own impoverished upbringing and experiences that made the Dickensian world...Dickensian. Not a forbidden love story.

Dickens always loved that which he could not have. He did not love his wife after he married her but gave her ten children! What he did was inexcusable today. Selfish and cruel and not romantic at all unless you are a Victorian.
