This is a seriously good fan theory. I'd imagined he was in Italy (Monte Cassino specifically) as a regular G.I. who'd always done art ("Monuments Men", anyone?). That being said, I can also imagine him in Occupied Japan, and seeing the aftermath of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Even as a kid, I remember Dean being the one adult character doing adult things I was never grumpy at. When the Iron Giant pulled a gun and Dean yelled at him and chased him away, kid me couldn't be mad because he really did almost kill Hogarth. Dean put up with so much wild shit, and only said no when a child almost died. Cemented him as a hero to me.

When shit ISN’T going down… he seems like your average lazy guy who doesn’t take anything seriously. But when shit DOES go down, turns out the dude is a badass.

I can kinda see that? Except Dean is more of the weird but chill artsy type, and sure his place is messy, but he runs his own business, he feeds his creativity and seems content and happy. Hopper, on the other hand, uses a laid-back, can’t-be-bothered demeanor as a front for his unprocessed trauma, loss, and depression. All of which gives him character growth, a great story arch, and a motivation for the choices he makes throughout the show. All that to say, Dean and Hopper are great characters, but I don’t think they’re that similar.

Pretty weird how Hogarth's only adult friend is a beatnik artist living in a junkyard who ends up getting frisky with his mom later, but I supposed the writers had to throw her a bone somehow. Sidenote: Remember the context, I said only adult friend and the only one he has gets frisky with Mommy Dearest later. The context is already weird and odd, I don't have to make it so. Many of y'all just don't care about the strangeness of the whole thing or you're so used to abnormal junk that calling it weird doesn't even register anymore. Like if you have ask why it's weird, that says more about the junk you've been through you than my plot preferences.

Loved Dean ever since I saw this film as a kid. I always wondered what he read as well since you see so many books in his house. He was always this cool, arty guy with this vibe about him. Can truly recognise that he's influenced my tastes in life even down to my obsession with turtlenecks that started with this movie. As I get older, he just gets more and more relatable.
