This was great. A friend gave me a book last year about the train wreck, very good. Its called "The White Cascade" by Gary Krist. It really digs into what was happening back then and letters, information about the people and what they were thinking and doing. I didn't realize the wreckage is still there. Great information. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Sounds like a good adventure.

+scott miller And the original GN route (now the Trail) was completed in 1893. Prior to the building of the first tunnel, the railroad crossed the summit ridge via a series of switchbacks that took it up to where US Hwy 2 crosses the summit today.

It started in 1897 and completed in 1900. Was closed in 1929 and so was the town of wellington (renamed tye)

A correction about the original Cascade Tunnel. It was completed in 1900 not 1925. The present Cascade Tunnel was opened in January 1929

We made the correction, Thanks for letting us know! In response to your PM we have hiked from the Scenic trailhead to Wellington. It is a nice walk through the valley, the switchbacks from the Scenic trailhead to Windy Point are a bit questionable though. :)

The switchbacks from Windy Point to Scenic aren't part of the original roadbed. They were added by the trail builders. Before the original Cascade Tunnel was built there was switchbacks over the summit As I mentioned if you wish to connect direct my E-mail is: Espee-sp@hotmail.com Cliff Western Wanderers
