Wow she’s half Greek and she really said “Rhodes was ruled from the east by the Byzantine Empire in what today is Modern Turkey”?!?!?!?!?! First of all, the Byzantine Empire extended east and way west of Rhodes. The Byzantine Empire was Greek for the most part and existed for 1000 years before the Turks arrived in the area and established the OTTOMAN empire. Maybe it is just badly phrased but it makes it seem like the Byzantine Empire is part of Turkey’s heritage while it is part of Greece’s heritage.
@stewartmackay
@stewartmackay 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, I think you have misunderstood that. The Byzantine empire did indeed encapsulate a big chunk of what is now Turkey, as well as Greece and west of Greece. Here on Rhodes we have many relics and ruins from the Byzantine era.
@BlueLena
@BlueLena 2 жыл бұрын
@@stewartmackay I didn’t misunderstand. I myself said the empire expanded west and east of Rhodes. However, it’s the way she explains it that can be very misleading to people unaware of the history in this region. Saying Rhodes was ruled by an empire in what is nowadays modern Turkey (only?!?!?!), without adding further context, makes it seem as if Rhodes, let alone the Byzantine Empire, is part of the Turkish heritage and not the Greek.
@ergungeyikdagi3392
@ergungeyikdagi3392 2 жыл бұрын
The Byzantine empire is part of modern Turkey's heritage as well. Aghia Sophia still dominates the skyline of Istanbul, and served as a model for Ottoman mosques throughout the empire. Actually, throughout centuries many greek speaking christians converted to Islam and became turks. Like pagan greeks who quit the olympic gods to become christians, people change their religion and language. This is quite normal.
@BlueLena
@BlueLena 2 жыл бұрын
@@ergungeyikdagi3392 Oh yes I don’t disagree with that. But as Rhodes is an island in Greece, and as Greece retains the Byzantine Orthodox faith and everything associated with it mostly unchanged, the phrasing here seems unfortunate.

The Italians are to thank for a lot of the restorations on Rhodes as they occupied Rhodes and the other Dodecanese islands from the early twentieth century until World War Two.Italy took control as a result of a war with the Ottoman Empire.The chances are that they would still be Turkish if it wasn't for this war.Italy had to give them to Greece because Italy lost World War Two otherwise they would still be Turkish as Turkey was neutral in World War Two.

Revelation 1:13-‬15 KJV And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle. I was lucky enough to visit Rhodes for 5 days, a detour from my 3 weeks all over Turkey trip. I took the 90min speed ferry from Fethiye, Turkey for Euro40. There are Medieval castles, not the Disney made fake castles. At 4.11 the floor she was walking on, it's actually rounded stones stack up compactly to make the streets and grounds all over old Rhodes Town. She has to be not comfortable wearing that gladiator thin sole sandals, because it will feels like walking bare foot. I was wearing tennis shoes and still felt the stones when I walked on the Streets of the Knights. I wish each episode spend more time on each island, there are so much more to see, e.g. Lindo beach, Seven Springs, Anthony Quinn Bay is situated on the east coast of Rhodes, about 4 km south of Faliraki. On the mountains, there are free roaming peacocks and a giant cross on the monastery grounds. With only 1 visit, I totally fell in love with this beautiful island, esp the close proximity to Turkey, so that it's possible to tour 2 beautiful countries during the same trip.

The Greek empire of Byzantium was the longest lasting medieval kingdom in the world spanning 1150 years from 300AD till 1453 AD and a bit beyond that in some areas in mainland Greece. The title is not disturbing at all. And what has the Dark ages to do with anything. Greece had a Bronze age > Classical period > Byzantine (medieval) period > up till modern era
