i love to give a complete picture when describing things--especially college-- and so that leaves me to talk about hustle culture at yale university. i will admit, it is subtle. yet, it is very much there. in this video I go in-depth on how hustle culture shows up at yale, why it is harmful, and what ar some ways to combat it. this is a hard subject to talk about, and most people want to skip by it, but it is 100% part of the ivy college experience.

I definitely agree with how school now a days except students to constantly work, whether that’s a job, attending more classes or accepting a postín for an internship. The hustle culture will burn you out and I’m glad that you are bringing more awareness to this situation because it’s real! Mental health is just as important (even more tbh) than what’s on your resume.

Living in Australia and growing up in England, it’s hard to me to understand the constant push that seems so common in the states to work yourself into the ground, and the constant pressure of success. It makes me sad that there must be so much burn out among young people over there. I really liked watching your video and what you said, I think it’s very important to have that balance xx

Getting A’s is not easy for some people, but it is for others. I work hard for the A’s and B’s I get, but people who haven't put as much effort as I have, get better scores. It's just frustrating that my best isn't enough for academic excellence.

I went to Yale! I graduated in December 2021. I really struggled with my mental health in college and I know it's no secret that a lot of students do, particularly undergrads. Looking back, I put so much unnecessary pressure on myself, and I wish I hadn't. I think there were so many constructed expectations at Yale that do not translate into the postgrad world, *especially* if you are a liberal arts major. For example - the pressure to have various extracurriculars and always be "doing something" is not necessary or realistic. It's a lot better to focus on gaining work-related experience outside of college that speaks to you personally, even on-campus jobs (my semester job at the YUAG helped me get the job I have now, which I love). Extracurriculars do not hold as much weight on a resume as internships or jobs. You don't have to follow a formula in order to make it through Yale. Truly the best thing you can do is focus on what you're passionate about - or, if you're still figuring that out, enjoy your classes and learn as much as possible so that towards the end, you can synthesize all you've learned and determine your next steps postgrad. 💕

Go out every night and gaze at the moon for 20-30min. Ask for your wishes. This will calm you can keep you focused. You can do sun gazing first hour or last to get more energy and combat depression. This is mother nature’s way to heal her babies- that who we are. Just try and you will be amazed after a few days. If you need energy during the day- put feet on ground and look straight up to the sky and ask for divine guidance- it takes doing it a few times. Keep asking with open heart.

Hi Hannah! As a Stanford student I wanted to tell everyone seeing this video that the Duck Syndrome is very real! It truly is easy to romanticize college, but remember that it is not an end goal but just the beginning of another phase in your life. I know a lot of you are High Schoolers about to apply to college, so it's important to keep these and Hannah's words in mind! As for you, Hannah, I wanted to thank you for talking about these issues. I began thinking about them and reflecting on my own experience and it was incredibly gratifying to see someone relating to them. I think your video also helped me process a few thoughts. "Everyone acts as if getting As in all classes is not that hard, but it is" Well, how about getting yourself into a place that is out of your comfort zone, but not by that much. Ambition should not fall too far from talent. Otherwise you are harming yourself, as well as society (habits of rushed studying methods can manifest to habits of rushed results at work just to get that promotion, that can probably result in some dangerous mistake)

Hey Hannah, I'm a huge fan of your KZbin videos especially the Yale ones. I'm a high schooler considering applying to Yale I have a question for you, and it'd be great if you answer. I was thinking about writing about my traumatic experience for my college essay, not for pity or anything but I want to showcase my growth. Is it a good idea or would it be I come off as a sympathy seeker? And one more thing, what grade should you start seeing a college counsellor?

Would taking a normal full-time course load and joining just 1 or 2 clubs that really interest you not be a choice at Yale? If someone does just that, would being a student at Yale be as overwhelming as you pointed out? Just out of curiosity from a parent's perspective.
@HannahMariaXX
@HannahMariaXX 3 жыл бұрын
that is pretty much what i do (3 clubs currently tho) soooo i feel like it depends! it depends on a lot of things: (1) the high school preparation...i did not go to a preparatory high school, but many of me peers did. coming from a low-income background, i definitely was not prepared (comparatively) for intensity of work & level required. (2) depends on the course load. a full-time load can be anywhere from 3.5 credits (like 3 classes) to 5 credits/classes && each type of class has a varying amount of work expected/learning curve so scheduling is very important. (3) how demanding the clubs are/what the students' role is in them (4) how much of a general social life one wants to have ...etc. i hope this helps!

I love this!! Spot on and thank you for the reference to the NY times article too I enjoyed reading it. I'm also curious to learn about how based on the hustle culture at ivy leagues like Yale, what is the student life balance like? More specifically if you would consider your school also a "party school" where students have that work hard, play hard mentality? I'm curious because these days I've been thinking a lot about how many universities in the world are considered "party schools" whereas others are not, and how in life you will meet different people, some who work hard so that they can then party and let loose, and others who don't think that's their scene and are more academically-oriented. (I guess you can have both though)
@HannahMariaXX

Getting accepted into a prestigious University just for the sake of it is not a real goal in my opinion, not saying that getting into an Ivy League school shouldn't be celebrated, it definitely should but becoming a chemist, engineer, etc, are actual goals you should be chasing, no matter how you get there, what college you attend shouldn't be your identity, I can Imagine some Ivy League students feeling stressed out, and empty inside without a real identity, just my thoughts.

What did you expect it? Yale is one of the best universities in the world, a walk in the park? Of course, not. College in general is hard, nonetheless in the ivy, the best of the best! Let me tell you a fact of life: The struggles are not only on the Ivy schools, but the struggles are part of life. Life is NOT easy! Every stage of life is hard. When you are in school, your focus should be your classes and grades, and you don't have to be in any club if you don't want to. You don't have to take summer classes either if you don't want to if you are going to feel burned out. Just don't do it. You just need to adjust, don't do what everybody does, do what is good for you! I guess nobody prepared you to what to expect, but you are already there which is a privilege in itself, and stop complaining and enjoy it while you are there because what is coming is harder than just getting good grades! Your generation is too weak, always depressed and feeling sorry for themselves, you guys have it too easy that expect everything to be handle to you!
