I recommend using hand soap instead did dish soap, it's much easier to felt that way. It's because dish soap has anti-grease chemicals that keep the fibres from tangling. Also your method looked really effective, but I prefer less water on a flat counter with a textured mat. A bit less hard on the hands re: squeezing and rubbing. Love the cap!!!

You inspired me to make one myself, I was actually going to ask a family member to knit one for me but then realized it would be way cooler to be able to say I made it myself. I'm knitting a lowland bonnet though, as my family were borderers. I didn't make a swatch so I'm starting to panic on how big I should make it. Haha oh well. Good job!May I suggest to knit in the round with the right side facing you, clockwise, this way you have to knit , it will be easier and faster than your purl stitches....

Wasn’t sure why this popped up however I am very pleased to have seen this :) grand video and well done bonnet. I wear one as my daily hat, where I’m from the weather and landscape can be a wee bit of an issue and it’s very practical! I do wear a small white cockade on it. My blood fought at culloden and (to family knowledge) are still buried there. My own middle finger to the Tory shites xD A very informed and interesting video and some nifty craft with ya needles! Hi Marius! I finally, finally have the time to catch up on videos, including this one, so let's go! I did not know they were found on actual bog bodies, that's amazing!!! (do I have a possibly unhealthy interest for natural mummification? yes I do next question) I can't really comment anything on the actual knitting because I only know how to crochet, but it looks nice! (that's... that's something I can confidentally say) I do appreciate the nods you made to Outlander - while I am most definitely not a clothing historian or in general knowledgable about this periods and its clothing, I did think a lot of the clothing looked somewhat off and the way they wore the bonnets/caps did look weird to me... so yeah, appreciate that! The finished cap looks really nice and it suits you almost unfairly well!

How have I only now found this channel???! I'm an 18th century nerd (I also sew reconstructions!), a soon-to-be Celtic Studies student and WOW?! You're also trans??! That's AMAZING, I've only seen one or two trans people in our historical community and they weren't into 18th century. Have you sewn breaches? I’d recommend practicing the basic stitches-you could knit a little square as a test, which tbh you’ll need to do anyway to test how much the wool shrinks when felted. But it’s not too daunting a project imo, especially compared to something like socks

Hi! That’s a really good question. I’d recommend learning to make clothing, since premade clothing can be dodgy and custom clothing can be very expensive. You basically want to look into mid 18th century Scottish clothing, which for women is pretty similar to English/American clothing with a few small differences (e.g. Scottish women not having the same access to cotton as American women). I cover a fair amount of menswear on this channel!

It’s just a long rectangle of linen, hemmed on all four sides!

...so what I'm hearing is needle felt woolen fabric for the hat and give people shiny stickers when they notice it's not knited.... I'm so used to pit-knitting when I use dps I frequently forget and drop the newly empty needle.

Would I be right in saying that an unfinished and unfelted bonnet is basically a Monmouth Cap ?

A Monmouth cap wouldn’t have the decreases, and I think they’re also meant to be felted! It’s a similar concept, though
