Spring of 1980, a buddy of mine shows up at the apartment with this song and Joe Jackson's, "I'm the Man". To say it refocused my musical taste overnight, is a huge understatement. two and a half minutes of pure greatness.

Must of been a breath of fresh air for young TOTP viewers seeing the Punk/New Wave bands coming through in 1977 as most of the year it was MOR Rock and more so American R'n'B, Soul Ballads and Disco as it seemed the Top 30/40 was commercial soul station.

Interestingly this is a slightly different version, recorded in the BBC studios pre-show. As I recall this was a requirement of the Musicians Union and only certain bands were required to do it, chosen randomly, to 'prove' that they had actually performed on their own single.

Riff? It's just a simple chord progression. These were kids playing simple songs. It's the same reason so many chuck Berry songs sound the same or Ramones songs sound the same. This song (which I think is very mediocre in any case) doesn't sound anything like Holidays in the Sun (which, IMO, is a great song) other than the intro bit. If you listen to music you'll here the same chord progressions, patterns, riffs, etc over and over.

@tarkusmjg I totally agree. I saw the Jam in the 70's several times. They were young, eager and angry. Weller's writing had a real edge to it considering he really was nothing more then a kid when he wrote most of it. I don't fault him for the direction change but it's not the Weller I grew up with and not the music that I so loved.
