Spring of 1980, a buddy of mine shows up at the apartment with this song and Joe Jackson's, "I'm the Man". To say it refocused my musical taste overnight, is a huge understatement. two and a half minutes of pure greatness.

Must of been a breath of fresh air for young TOTP viewers seeing the Punk/New Wave bands coming through in 1977 as most of the year it was MOR Rock and more so American R'n'B, Soul Ballads and Disco as it seemed the Top 30/40 was commercial soul station.

I grew up listening to The Jam. Loved the music and had a serious crush on Paul Weller. He's now a man, his music has changed, I have loved all his music, Style Council and his solo stuff. Favourite Jam song....funny enough In the City or the Bitterest Pill, Style Council It didn't matter or You're the Best Thing.........solo Above the Clouds

Oh stop. Brian isn't wrong. And neither is the o.p. Beatles peak was '67-'69. This song came out around '77. But had written and played couples years before. Around this time was Ramones, Sex Pistols and Clash were gaining popularity. Just enjoy the music the message.

Interestingly this is a slightly different version, recorded in the BBC studios pre-show. As I recall this was a requirement of the Musicians Union and only certain bands were required to do it, chosen randomly, to 'prove' that they had actually performed on their own single.

1970's curly guitar leads. What were they all about, I managed to find one a few years back and understood immediately why they died out, if you move more than a few feet away from your amp the springiness pulls them out. Great track BTW saw The Jam many a time when I was a young'un.

i have one that i still use today. it's about 40ft coiled, which ends up being about 20ft. still plenty of length for me.and personally i think they sound better....but that's just my opinion.

The Jam's In The City was recorded first,the Sex Pistols recorded Holidays In The Sun afterwards,the Sex Pistols did steal the riff from this song for theirs !

Riff? It's just a simple chord progression. These were kids playing simple songs. It's the same reason so many chuck Berry songs sound the same or Ramones songs sound the same. This song (which I think is very mediocre in any case) doesn't sound anything like Holidays in the Sun (which, IMO, is a great song) other than the intro bit. If you listen to music you'll here the same chord progressions, patterns, riffs, etc over and over.

@tarkusmjg I totally agree. I saw the Jam in the 70's several times. They were young, eager and angry. Weller's writing had a real edge to it considering he really was nothing more then a kid when he wrote most of it. I don't fault him for the direction change but it's not the Weller I grew up with and not the music that I so loved.
