Better stop dreaming of the quiet life, 'cause it's the one we'll never know And quit running for the runaway bus 'cause those rosy days are few And stop apologizing for the things you've never done 'Cause time is short and life is cruel but it's up to us to change This town called malice Rows and rows of disused milk floats stand dying in the dairy yard And a hundred lonely housewives clutch empty milk bottles to their hearts Hanging out their old love letters on the line to dry It's enough to make you stop believing when tears come fast and furious In a town called malice, yeah Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba, oh Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba Struggle after struggle, year after year The atmosphere's a fine blend of ice, I'm almost stone cold dead In a town called malice, ooh yeah A whole street's belief in Sunday's roast beef Gets dashed against the Co-op To either cut down on beer or the kid's new gear It's a big decision in a town called malice, ooh yeah The ghost of a steam train, echoes down my track It's at the moment bound for nowhere Just going round and round, oh Playground kids and creaking swings Lost laughter in the breeze I could go on for hours and I probably will But I'd sooner put some joy back In this town called malice, yeah In this town called malice, yeah In this town called malice, ooh yeah

Just re-watched Billy Elliot and the dance montage with Town Called Malice. Forgot how great this song is and what a great piece of film making that sequence is. The anger and frustration of Billy expressed through dance while listening to the biting lyrics with subtly upbeat music and rhythm of the Jam. That's a lot to get right in one 3 minute section of film and they nailed it.

Absolutely brilliant song. Ironically, it is joyous in sound but lyrically quite dark. Definitely one of the best songs of all time IMHO. Paul Weller is amazingly talented: not only is the Jam stupendous, his solo work and that on the Style Council are amazing, too.

Complete rubbish, he never wrote a better song than when he was with the Jam. Most of their songs melody was in the rhythm of Foxtons bass and Bucklers drums...listen to all the Jam music, Paul is mostly the songwriter, however the mood of the song is from the rhythm. So sad he chose to be a dick, the Jam could have been there with the greats....instead Style Council was just a watered down heap of sh1t...allegedly because Wellers old man, who managed the Jam, decided Paul was too talented for the others....what a prick!

Cannot believe at 49 years old Im just discovering this band. Swear to you, here in the states, not a single soul introduced me to this band. WTH man !!! The clash? yes of course the Smiths? Absolutely the cure? decades ago etc etc etc the list goes on and on of amazing British bands I've indulged in but NO ONE introduced me to this wonderful band? Are you serious?I repeat ... WTH man!!! The only song that sounds somewhat familiar is 'that's entertainment' and yet cannot place where I've heard it. I'm sickened (for missing them) yet elated (for finally discovering them) by this experience. Better late than never I guess. Smh in disbelief.

It’s amazing that songs from the past are much more relevant than songs of today. I was turned on to the mod style in high school in the late seventies in Pasadena, California. We got vespas, trench coats, and started ska dancing at Marilyn’s Backstreet in Pasadena, the Seven Seas in Hollywood, and the 321 club in Santa Monica. Those were fun times that I wish I could revisit.

Cammy Gunn Just like it was in 1982 when this song was released. I was 17 at the time and I can tell you with absolute certainty that it is actually better today. When it comes to chart topping shit, the 80's was king. This song was beat, by a wide margin, by "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" from "Tight Fit" and Irene Cara's "Fame" for example. Wanna dream about how great the 80's were? Go listen to those two and throw in some Sinitta while you are at it....and take off those rose colored glasses, they make you look stupid.
