Seriously epic. I know it's a tourism ad, but this is definitely far more convincing and enjoyable to watch than the fast paced, 10 second/1 minute ad spots featuring ALL the things you can see and do in a city we all know anyway. Ehime was where I got sent when I selected "countryside" on the study abroad form. It was incredibly lonely at times, but the people I met made all the difference. Decades later, Ehime is still where I consider my hometown in Japan. I've learned that it's the kindness of the people you meet who make a place light up and unforgettable in your heart. That's why although I've been to many other places in Japan as a tourist after I grew up, they don't compare to the way Ehime will always feel in my heart. Matsuyama has such a beautiful castle, the view of the sea from the top is unexpected and breathtaking. I've never been to a city where the castle is still such an integral part of daily life for its residents. The castle is situated at the very heart of the city, not tucked away in a hard to reach corner. Every early morning, students ride their bicycles around the castle moat to get to various high schools and colleges across the city. As a citrus producing area, the mikan in Ehime taste fresher and juicier than anywhere else. May your travels to Matsuyama and the rest of Ehime result in the sweetest memories.

I've lived in Matsuyama for the last 8 years. During the pandemic, tourism from both within and outside the country dropped off pretty quickly and has only recently started to pick up again. The SDGs have seen heaps of projects like the fishery/resturant, the renovations of old buildings into hotel rooms, and other traditional crafts around the region get a huge boost. Ozu Castle is amazing in any weather (and Matsuyama castle is too!). So stoaked to see my adopted home town and province get such a great coverage from such an enthsiastic person!

This is DOPE! More folks are interested in stuff like this but they might not realize it. You can get takoyaki on a neon lit street at 2 am. Cool for some folks. But you can also have an authentic Japanese lunch at the top ancient Japanese castle. Or a picnic overlooking that castle. All seem pretty cool to me. I figure the Japanese would find a Ranch Hand-style experience in Texas pretty nice as well. Ride some horses, steer some cattle and a nice chuck wagon style dinner under starlight singing songs.

Most memorable things about my two visits to Japan were outside the regular international tourist route... It's like, don't get me wrong, I loved my visits to Tokyo, I loved my visits to Kyoto, Osaka, and the main tourist attractions too... though the second time I visited Japan back in 2018 it sure was almost too packed to enjoy fully. My first trip there was back in 2007, and back then you could still see things better and enjoy more of the touristic places. Nowadays, specially now that tourism is back, I can tell that the most famous spots will be too overflowing with people to enjoy freely. But the real magic of Japan happens in places like that.... Ehime, the smaller cities in the east coast of Japan, or even smaller towns on the interior of the largest prefectures. It's there that you start seeing more of an untainted history and culture that came to modernity in a more organic manner. There's also all these grand pieces of historical value that are not swamped by tourism, and yet there is great care to all these places, they are very well maintained, lots of environments that leaves you in kind of a contemplative state. And we only got to visit a few of those places because of my ancestors... we were looking for possible towns and places my great great grandparents came from, seeing if there was still some remnant of the family there (most of the Japanese side of my family migrated before WWII, so it's a long way back). Anyways, great showing from Vice! Wasn't expecting it... xD I also wish I could speak Japanese as fluently as KTea. xD Never learned the language, the family teaching Japanese to kids stopped around my parents' generation...

I didn't even know how beautiful Ehime is. As a Japanese, it's a shame many foreign tourists just go to like Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and leave. I love Kyoto but nowadays it's almost over-tourism. There are a lot more local places worth visiting with less crowds and more authenticity like Ehime. I personally recommend like, Kagoshima, Aizuwakamatsu, Kanazawa(my hometown!), and so much more!

Like K'Tea stated at the beginning of the video, Japan has SO MUCH to offer. Not taking credit away from Tokyo and Kyoto (which are great cities in its own right), but exploring and understanding other cities and towns in this beautiful country will definitely give a new appreciation to the people and the culture. I am lucky I get to live here!! Favorite city: Fukuoka.

I lived in Shizuoka Prefecture for about 2-3 years and found myself frequently drawn to Shikoku Island whenever I had a few days to spare. My trips there often involved impromptu road trips, deciding my next destination on a whim. I felt at peace with myself in Shikoku. There was something about the incredible variety of beautiful landscapes, and the fact that few tourists visit - I felt Shikoku was my secret paradise. Nowadays, I live in London with my spouse and our child, with another little one on the way. I've had the pleasure of taking my wife to Shikoku for a vacation once before, and we just returned from our second trip last week, this time accompanied by our son. We embarked on a road trip around the island, primarily exploring Ehime, with brief stops in Kochi and Kagawa (all 4 prefectures of Shikoku are equally nice). The experience was so nice once again, particularly with our child joining us this time. Ehime and Shikoku hold a special place in my heart. Although it might be a bit challenging to access, especially without a car, I consider Shikoku the finest part of Japan. These regions offer a refreshing break from the typical flashy tourist spots, presenting an authentic and picturesque landscape. From the serene northern coast along the Seto Inland Sea and its charming islands, to the southern coast facing the Pacific Ocean, and the stunning inland mountains, Shikoku is truly breathtaking. How I wish I could reside in Shikoku!

If travelers would like to go to other local tour spot, I recommend to go to Yamagata City in Yamagatat Prefecture too. They have Mt.Zao, good Onsen ryokans,Yamadera which is temple on the mountain, delicious Yamagata beef, Imoni potato soup, Don-Donyaki crape, lots of Ramen and Soba restaurants, top class ranked rice ''Tsuyahime," good Sake and best cherry in the world.
