I believe the aeroplane at the beginning was Jo’s first. A chap called Bill Hitchmough was sent by Jo to purchase it. This chap happened to be my grandfather. He was also responsible for taking the JCB brand to Japan and Australia. Not only that, he arranged for the lakes at Rocester to be dug.

I have been watching JCB excavators for years and i never saw one of these early models with a cap on the exhaust yet all these seem to have them fitted, love the demolition!, none of this picking at the building, just smash it!

Id rather dig with a hand showel than a cat backhoe. Lacking power, way to heavy, no breakout force, poor visibility from the cab and no traction in slippery conditions. Think it was a 432 we had. When we finally got rid of it because nobody wanted to use it. The jcb 4cx we got later was NOT much better, but at least it could pull itself out of the mud and you could see out of it. Backhoes suck in general, but cat is by far the worst i have used

Caterpillar were nowhere near making a wheeled backhoe when these were new so hardly comparable! In fact they were very late to the wheeled backhoe market 1980’s iirc ‘ this is 1960’s here! They were a long way off too before they found any ground against the other backhoes at the time, JCB, Case, Ford & Massey Ferguson . Although agreed caterpillars tracked machines & loaders were of superior quality compared to any competition back then. They were only really challenged when komatsu came on to the market
