The bit with the dog being dragged along is one of the best sight gags ever. I love it when the animal performers are so good it feels like they actually get the joke. Carl Reiner, plaintiff #1 in the OptiGrab lawsuit, directed the film. His son Rob Reiner - a director in his own right - played the driver who gave Navin the ride to the end of the fence. Among other worthwhile Steve Martin films are "Pennies From Heaven", "Three Amigos" and "Parenthood".

BTW, I found out something interesting about Steve Martin and Rob Reiner. They were actually a pair of hotshot writers for the old "Smothers Brothers" show that was really popular back in the mid 1960s.

Only hug I recall from him (I'm cool now, no worries) was after Trek 2, as I was bawling my eyes out 'cause Spock. "Shit!", Pop said, "didn't think they'd kill him. It'll be okay. They'll make another movie and they need Spock." He wasn't right about most things but he was right about that.

I wasn't a fan Mixed Nuts and LA Story and I thought Bowfinger would've been funnier considering you had him with Eddie Murphy....but it's definitely better than Mixed Nuts. But all of the others listed are classics....Planes, Trains and Automobiles is still one of my favorites of Steve Martin as well as Sgt. Steve Martin is a legend. He was the first comic to do large stadium shows and this movie was the forerunner and inspiration for movies like “Dumb and Dumber”. He’s been in a lot of great films but you should watch some of his standup shows. They’re amazing!

Back in the day, before convenience store type of gas stations, gas station bathrooms were located outside of the gas station. Owners would keep their bathrooms locked to keep out the homeless people. You had to ask for a key to go to the bathroom. Many times the key would get stolen or the patron would forget to return it and this meant the owner had to incur cost to change the lock. Many owners went to great extremes to prevent their key from getting stolen or lost. Using a heavy car rim as a key chain was the most common one that I saw. Others would simply keep your drivers license until you returned the key.

Has both Steve Martin and Keanu Reeves. It is one of the most charming heartfelt films. It will make you laugh and cry. Highly recommend Parenthood. Star studded.

In one of Thomas Perry's Jane Whitefield books,, "Dance for the Dead (1996), a judge tells Jane, "I understand you are one of those people who could kill me with a pencil." We use to watch this movie once a year back in the '80s when it was aired on one of the three big networks. This one and Stir Crazy with Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder, both of these were like a family tradition to see them once a year when they were shown on TV. I think Stir Crazy is a much funnier film. The Jerk has a lot of hit and miss humor, but the beginning was very funny.

I agree with Dawn that Dr. Strange love is kind of funny but only in a very cynical sense. And given the type of leaders we've seen in the world, it feels a lot more like a documentary than it was intended to. So I can relate to not laughing at what is really a very depressing movie.

Strangelove is satire, so there is meant to be a strand of truth through it. That movie was made about leaders of the time - I doubt they change much, but the US seems to reward people who are openly dishonest.

Bernadette Peters (Marie) is a villain in "Annie" (1982), and voiced Rita the cat on Animaniacs. Steve Martin has "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles", and it's a Thanksgiving movie. "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" (1988), "Little Shop of Horrors" You might not get "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid", since it parodies 1940s stuff.

Steve Martin is a genius. Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, Pennies From Heaven, All of Me, The Man With Two Brains are all great examples of his creativity. Honorable mentions go to Roxanne and LA Story. This film is based on some of Steve's stand-up material. He wrote a memoir, Born Standing Up, which I can enthusiastically recommend.

To be fair, "Doctor Strangelove" is from a different time. You didn't grow up in the Cold War era when we thought WWIII could start any time. About the restroom key attached to the metal wheel from a car: Back in the days of full service gas stations in America, for some reason that was never clear to me, some people would ask for then steal the restroom keys. As a way to try and prevent this, stations would attach the key to a larger object like a 12" to 16" piece of wood (plastic, metal, or anything substantial of any reasonable size were also used). I did also see a station that used stuffed plush animal toys. The realized they were losing even more keys because people were more interested in stealing the toys than the keys. Yeah, this idea didn't last long. I do have to say though that I believe this movie is the only time I ever saw the use of a vehicle wheel of any kind 🤔.
