Screenwriters have to come up with that on their own, but once you focus on character, sometimes you to make changes to story so that it vibes with the characters. As a history major myself, I can enjoy it because it tells a story of humanity, and tells of events that did happen, even if those events are not completely accurate, because the general gist of it is there.

Well who knows what they actually said in real life 900 years ago but surely Saladin was smart enough to know that Baldwin was very sick and will likely die soon. This movie does something uniquely great by deeply respecting both sides and the complexity of the era and while of course not being historically accurate, it is also not outlandish in the freedoms it takes to tell its story, one may say that it manages to capture the mystified spirit of the era perfectly. The director's cut is truly a work of art and everyone who worked on this should feel pride in the accomplishments of their hard work paying off masterfully.
