I grew up with Joe Franklin shows. Joe was about the most generous, gracious host ever.

Oh, my! I saw the performance in Portland that he spoke of. A friend took me. His boss' daughter was that seventeen year old girl who starred with Donald that night. She got us tickets. It was great!!! 1979.

Ahhh talk shows back then were so straight forward - it almost feels like a chore for the guest and the host. I love Donald though - in his young days he was yummy

My Grandmother, Mary DeGrace, a student of Walter Damrosch, was a guest on Joe Franklin--I can't find her video or when it was.

9:46 he says his age. So it's at least around 1977.

@@92jwiener Thanks, that makes sense. I was wondering, because they talk about comebacks, yet don't mention his true comeback when he performed on the Oscars in 1981, two years after he sought treatment for his alcoholism, which nearly killed him.

1979. They speak of two appearances on stage at the recent Academy awards, one by Sir Laurence Olivier, and another by John Wayne. See them here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ioTKp6NmoZahaNU kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZiboaytqp2amLc

@@thegreatdominion949 You're right, it definitely must be 1979, as Finnian's Rainbow was performed in 1979( www.nytimes.com/1979/05/06/archives/new-jersey-weekly-new-jerseythis-week-theater-music-dance.html) - seems people in show business continue to forget their ages! (Debbie Reynolds continued to say that she was 17 in Singing in the Rain, even though she was 19) - here he must have been 53, almost 54(not 52 as he says)

1979. I saw him in that performance in Portland, Oregon at St. Mary's Academy. My friend's boss' daughter was the seventeen year old girl who starred with him then. She got us tickets to see her perform with Donald. It was a great performance!

was this post 1990? he had quadruple by-pass and was very ill in 1990. He smoked, but that was not the cause of his triple-by-pass heart surgery. He had no ailments from smoking 2 to 3 packs a day for 40 years.

The performance Donald spoke of in Portland, Oregon took place in 1979. I saw him then. That dates this interview to 1979.
