The John C Taylor Collection at Ronald Phillips London - The Spanish Tompion
Carter Marsh & Co (www.cartermarsh.com/) present the most important private collection of English clocks ever to come on the market in the UK.
The supremacy of English clocks originated in late Elizabethan London, flowering in the mid-17th century with the first pendulum timepieces, leading on to the ‘Golden Age’ of London clockmaking, and then to the 18th century quest for precision timekeeping at sea; all of which is comprehensively represented in this spectacular collection of iconic English clocks, watches and scientific instruments, assembled over 30 years by the inventor and philanthropist, Dr John C Taylor OBE (www.johnctaylor.com). John is best known for his inventions in kettle controls and has over 400 patents to his name.
The John C Taylor Collection will be sold over several catalogued selling exhibitions from the Carter Marsh Winchester premises - with Part 1 in July 2021, but starting in June with a highlights exhibition, hosted at the Mayfair galleries of the world-renowned fine English furniture specialists, Ronald Phillips Ltd (www.ronaldphillipsantiques.co.uk).
• Wednesday 23rd to Wednesday 30th June 2021: Highlights from the John C Taylor Collection, at Ronald Phillips Ltd, 26 Bruton Street, London W1J 6QL.
• Saturday 3rd to Saturday 24th July 2021: The John C Taylor Collection - Part I, at Carter Marsh & Co, 32a The Square, Winchester SO23 9EX.
Driven by Dr Taylor’s appreciation of practical and inventive expertise, he has assembled an unrivalled collection of iconic clocks, often of museum quality and importance. Featuring the finest examples from the ‘Who’s Who’ of the historical clock and watchmaking world, the collection includes the particularly well-known names of Ahasuerus Fromanteel, Edward East, Thomas Tompion, Joseph Knibb, Daniel Quare, George Graham and many more besides, with prices ranging from £3,000 to £3.5 million.
Dr Taylor’s contributions to innovation, engineering and philanthropy have been celebrated by the Isle of Man Post Office in a set of six stamps. More information can be found about them here: www.iompost.com/stamps-coins/....
