I hiked the John Muir Trail in 2022 and will be hiking it again in 2024. Here are 4 changes I hope to make this time around. Also, I list 3 big questions all JMT hikers will be facing this year that are out of hikers control.

Update on Red's Meadow: They will be offering resupply services this year. The Mule House Cafe, Shower House, and General Store will all be open. Sounds like the backpackers campground will be open all week as well. Update on Tuolumne Meadows: There’s word that the post office will be open this summer. It’s not yet officially confirmed.

I did sobo jmt in 2016, and evolution valley is a must to camp in my opinion. Such a beautiful place and sunset makes it worth the time to get there. Virginia lakes is the one place I wish We would have camped. And like you, im wondering how the bridge out will impact route options. Personally id pack a day extra worth of food and take my chances crossing the river in a very well scouted cross path. But to each there own! Subscribed to see your trip. Happy Trails!

Thanks for subscribing! Thats good to hear about Evolution Valley. I am fully hoping to cross the river to get there. I did get to camp at Lake Virginia and it was one of my better nights on trail. That night is what really has me wishing I spent some of the other nights around the lakes, and I fully plan to this time around!

Thanks. I am headed NOBo end of July. Hoping bridge is open and haven’t heard updates on the other not controllable.

If its not open, hopefully the river is crossable. People were crossing last year at the end of August and it was a much higher snow year. Hope you have a great hike!

@@give.me.wilderness thanks for the input. Other question I am trying to figure out since Whitney is Carry out is there a place north bound to dispose of wag bags? Curious if you have heard anything about this.

@@brandongatlin9628 I think MTR or VVR would be the first place unless you were to get off trail before that for a resupply. Not sure where you’re starting but if you can make it to Crabtree Meadow, you wont have to carry it out.

Starting in Whitney portal. And most likely will need to break it into two days to get to Crabtree based on when I can get on trail. But food for thought and planning

I spent a wicked night at Evolution Lake during a lightning storm. You were smarter than I was.

Yikes! I had similar weather last year at a couple lakes on the TRT. Not fun!

I am starting SOBO June 30th and have the same three questions as you. For the South Fork San Juaquin I'm considering a couple of options. I really don't want to do the Bishop Pass route and miss Evoluition Valley/Lake or Muir Pass. Supposedly there is an Over the Top route starting around Aspen Meadow and exiting either Evolution Meadow or McClure Meadow. I'm also considereing a Hell For Sure Pass route, but that adds 32 miles and there may be permit issues with this route.

Yup, I've been looking at those options as well. I'm hoping to get some info from others on trail to see what they did and how it went. These also add some extra challenges as far as how much food to carry, which will probably need to be determined before hand. I'll be interested to know how things go for you. Either way, I hope you have a great hike!

I'm putting my cards in the "Up and Over" route. It's a South facing slope, so hopefully the snow will be melted but late June

I was in Tuolomne in October last year for some day hikes, the store is completely gone. They said there will be no services in Tuolomne this summer, only the Visitors Center. I’ll be hiking NoBo starting in mid August, sounds like we may cross paths. Looking forward to it.

Thanks for the info! I was really hoping the PO would at least be open. It’s going to be a heavy carry out of Yosemite Valley! Hope to see you out there!

I’ll be NOBO too mid August. Though I literally live in Tuolumne County, no SOBO lottery win for me. Still researching the bridge alts options. It would be nice if NPS would at least allow a pop-up resupply van or trailer or something in there at Tuolumne Meadows. Not just for JMT, but the PCT hikers who have a long stretch before Sonora Pass.

@@kristymoore7052 I think the river will be passable by late August. It was last year about that time and there was much more snow. I’m in the Sierra right now doing some day hikes, and the snow seems to melting faster as well. Still, my plan on the JMT will be to evaluate once I get to the Bishop Pass cutoff, and if there are no storms forecasted that could swell the river, I plan to proceed on and ford the river.
