Laws are in place to protect everyone as to how many hours a driver can work/drive a day/week. When your time is up you have to park and get rest, the cost of that parking space is going up and up everywhere.
Shipping through Dover doesn’t get any easier.
The snow is falling in France.

Good morning, good morning, good morning can't beat a bit of stellar reversing to start off a cold, dark day in January.😂😂 Never realised just how frustrating your day can be, you think of truck driving as bowling down some sunny, foreign motorway without a care in the world. At least you got an earlier ferry. Lovely scenery, snow looks nice in the fields, but not so good on the roads. Thanks once again for a really interesting and informative video. Safe journeys.

Hi Sherralin, I'm fairly new to watching trucking videos and definitely prefer seeing the European trips. Enjoying all your videos and the comments and info. I drive from Scotland to SW France at least twice a year to go on holiday and finding out a lot of useful info from listening to your commentaries. Been going down that way for over 25 years and never used the tunnel once. Gave up on the cheaper Dover ferries about five years ago as the place became a nightmare and just so frustrating. Coming back via Calais was just as bad. Happy to pay the extra and cut down the mileage by travelling via Portsmouth now. Would love to have the time to drive right down through Spain and Portugal as your videos make the routes very interesting. One day... Stay safe and I look forward to watching your next post 👍

Hi Sherralin, Firstly Happy New Year to you & yours… 2ndly, My Mrs asks did she hear you phoning in on Radio 2 - Jeremy Vine last week? Ok that’s housework out the way… Anyway have been enjoying your videos for a long time now as it brings back memories of in the 90’s when I was doing European. We all said when the roads were full of “Willi Betts “ (Blue & Grey wagons) that it was the beginning of the end for UK wagons out in Europe. Anyway moving on It’s nice to see Castets still standing (had many a late night 🍷🍷in there) It was also a treat to see the border @ Vila Formosa (again many a night on the 🍷🍷) a few videos ago… Anyway please keep the videos coming and if your friend happens to be a guy called Nat, please let me know, as we worked together back in the day for Buzzers and last I heard he had a bar/restaurant down that way. Be Lucky… Lee

Hi from France, great little video, funny the comment you made on how few English trucks (sorry,lorries or H.G.V's) are working in comparision to the amount of eastern european transport companies.I drive à petrol tanker here in France,i see alot of eastern european transport companies, very few french companies (in comparison),heaps of "doprava/spedicyca" on the rear of those units.The dépôt where i'm based uses heaps of eastern block subbies pulling various trailers of ours.....they must be economicly viable.Great chanel.

Everything is done by bar-codes now. When you book on, give the paperwork including, CMR, GMR (Goods Movement Reference) and customs bar-codes, with your passport. They scan the codes, in the same way as when you’re shopping, this goes through the customs system. When you are on the ferry everything gets logged automatically. Any problems, if you have animal products on, or they just want to have a look, it will show orange on the board and you follow the orange sign when you get off to get it sorted. If things are not correct for UK customs when you book on, you will not be able to ship until it’s rectified.

Interesting that you listed the countries that heavy snowfall. I am in Japan and we have many regions that have really deep snow. People don't often associate Japan with deep snow, despite the country hosting the Winter Olympics twice. Anyway, why I said 'interesting' was because I was wondering whether any countries further south than Scandinavia make winter tyres mandatory during the winter months. Here, we have to have snow tyres and in many prefectures, both winter tyres and snow chains, the use of snow chains dictated by the highway authorities depending on the snowfall. Obviously the chains only need be fitted to a drive axle wheels, although winter tyres are mandatory for all wheels including trailers. All trailers, from a tiny camping trailer like you can buy at somewhere like Halfords, to articulated lorry trailers. On the expressways (motorways) which are all tolled, all traffic gets diverted into a parking area (which is really for the purpose of putting on and pulling off chains) and the highway authorities check every vehicle to see that they have the appropriate tyres or chains on. If you don't have the right tyres, you are made to get off of the expressway and in some cases, even fined.
@GBtrucklady
@GBtrucklady 9 ай бұрын
Yes many countries in Europe insist on winter tyres, snow socks or chain, depending on the severity of the conditions. We don’t have such regulations in UK, we don’t have much thick snow, it only really gets that bad in Scotland. In Spain you get parked up while they clear the roads.

Hi Sherralin, enjoying watching your videos. I drive a bit for work, but only in a car and in the UK, but I like to see what's like drive a truck through Europe. I have question - do you pick which ferry you use or is the company?
@GBtrucklady
@GBtrucklady 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching, glad you are enjoying the channel. Normally the company do the custom clearing and ship us through Brittany Ferries as it has a very good relationship with them. We just let the office know what time we need. Sometimes though it depends on if a customer does their own custom clearance, as in this case. From Dover the office make an “open booking” with P&O, which means we catch the next available ferry.

I love watching your videos. I have a question. I am in Australia and notice that most of the prime movers in Europe are single axle rear. Yours is not but most are. How does this effect weight distrubition as the front of the trailer could only accept ten tonne while he rear being tripple axle can carry much more? I have never seen this configuration in Australia. I am not a truck driver. My interest is from the point of view as a vehicle builder.
@GBtrucklady
@GBtrucklady 5 ай бұрын
Hi, in UK the overall permitted weight is 44 tonnes, which is why we run mostly on 3 axle units (prime movers). This allows for best weight distribution. UK enforcement of axle weights is very strict. Also, historically our road tax is cheaper for 3 axles than for 2, this is because they say 3 axles damage the roads less. In Europe (generally) the overall weight allowed is 40 tonnes. They do not very often check axle weights just overall weights. So they save weight and fill the space with extra fuel tanks as many former eastern european countries have cheaper fuel than UK. I prefer a short, 2 axle unit as they can be turned in smaller areas but you do have to load them correctly to stay within UK regulations.
@ronleeky7675
@ronleeky7675 5 ай бұрын
@@GBtrucklady Thank you Sherralin. So you are saying that generally the only times when a two axle prime mover is used would be for across channel work. The rule in Europe seems to me to be very slack as I agree totally with the opinion that two axle setups do more damage to roads. If they use that extra space to fit more fuel tanks then that axle is severly over weight causing even more damage. I enjoy your vidios very much as they give me a view of Europe that I otherwise would not see. I look forward to your next one.
@GBtrucklady
@GBtrucklady 5 ай бұрын
@ronleeky7675 They are used in UK but if you want to utilise the total payload weight allowance, rather than than filling the space, it takes more thinking about. Many supermarkets and parcel companies in UK use 2 axle but are double decker (16”4’/ 5m) trailers as the loads are light but take up more room. In most of Europe (UK is only in europe geographically) their weight allowance is less so it takes less thinking about, making it easier. In some countries like Norway, Sweden and Denmark they allow much heavier weights and are regularly on 3 axles or what we call “wagon & drag” type set ups, for logging etc.

If you running to malaga there are alternatives across the channel rather than Dover. Is it the time travelled or cost as to why dover is used? . Interesting the press don't cover the freight delays. At least in malaga the chances of snow are slim. Stay safe.
@GBtrucklady

It goes through Dover because the customer does the clearing that way. If our office do it we go through Portsmouth but at the end of the day it’s down to what the customer wants. 😁

When the train first started, they used to serve a nice meal with a small bottle of wine. Now it's just a numbers game and the drivers are treated like cattle. Dover was never that slow in the winter, it must be disheartening to get up early and still be delayed that much. If I remember Rouen correctly, as you came out of the long tunnel, you turned over the road out and then you headed towards Paris from there. Sometimes (before Sat-nav) I'd go the slightly longer way around Bordeaux if the east side junction was queuing. There's not much in it. I spent many nights at Castets and the occasional weekend there too. Looking forward to the next bit through Irun. Back then everyone went via Burgos if you were heading to Madrid.

Regarding the use of blinkers. From an Aussie who drove over there for a while, my old boss (Marlin Express) an Uk company always said if you are ever in involved in any accident in a UK rego vehicle on the continent even if you are in the right, you will be wrong. 😡😡😎

Been a few years since going over the Humber Bridge. I put it on a par with the Ponte de Nomandie bridge at Le Havre in France. Just wouldn't like to drive over it when there's a gale force wind, even in the car🤣. One thing I hate about Dover docks is that its so eerie. I do really hate parking in docks at night time. Daytime, I don't mind, but not dark. With passport control its always the French who hold everyone up. They're either very slow or on strike, nothing in between🤣. And then its the English turn to queue. I always loved driving in France, the roads were free and clear, then when we're driving back towards Calais, I could feel myself getting cramps thinking of the state of our roads. I would dread it. Rouen, don't mention that horrible place to me. I've been through it numerous times, and its one of those places that I always get lost in, even using the satnav, even the voice stutters when its going through as if it doesn't where it has to go. At least when its finished, it can't possibly be any worse than before

I’ve known my boss for many years but even with the last boss, it was something I told them before I took the job, “I’ll drive to Timbuktu but I’ll not leave UK underground!” If a load has to go that way, I’m happy for it to be given to someone else. If it came to it that was the only way the lorries went then I’d have to find a different job. 😁

@@GBtrucklady great that you are all trusted - it’s important. I was interested in your remark about the tunnel - doesn’t both me. Before I retire I ran a fleet/of vehicles on a major distribution fleet, we had trackers on all units with a huge screen in the traffic office, when you walked in on a Monday morning you had an an image of what it should look like especially the vehicles on the Irish runs. Keep up the good work really like your videos, makes me envious.

I am subbed to your channel for quite a while now, but as with a lot of my subbed channels you do not come up often in my (subscribed) recommendations. Maybe it needs addressing as you potentially loose views on your videos because of this. Might be worth you asking them if you have time. I always enjoy your vids as your voiceovers are very relaxing and enjoyable. I am just seeing this vid on January 31. Take care and stay safe Sherralin. Norm in Yorkshire.
