Thank you, Simon. I appreciate that you always manage to find appropriate and period-correct artwork for the stories. Would you please consider adding details of the artwork to the description?
@BitesizedAudio4 ай бұрын
A very good point, I usually do put the details of the artwork in the video description (when it's an actual painting, like this one). In this case I forgot to do so as I was short on time... and I can't remember the details off-hand (I'm away from home right now and can't check easily). I'll add it in as soon as I'm able to look it up

SPOILER maybe, but the final judgment is reminiscent of the Greek story of Zeuxis and Parrhasius, who "staged a contest to determine the greater artist. When Zeuxis unveiled his painting of grapes, they appeared so real that birds flew down to peck at them. But when Parrhasius, whose painting was concealed behind a curtain, asked Zeuxis to pull aside that curtain, the curtain itself turned out to be a painted illusion. Parrhasius won, and Zeuxis said, 'I have deceived the birds, but Parrhasius has deceived Zeuxis.'"

Hey Simon, would you help me find a story? 🥺 I think it is a short story. Or at least a short novel. Written in the person of a boy, or an adult man recounting his boyish memories. He tells of his parents, and how one poisened the other to death with some medicine from a bottle, for which they went to prison. However, it turns out, in the last paragraph, that it was the boy who innocently switched the bottles and hence caused the tragedy. I read it decades ago, around the time I was reading Somerset Maugham. But I am not sure he wrote this one.

I have been searching on google on and off for a long time, but I always just get recent stories or real crimes...
@BitesizedAudio2 ай бұрын
Hmmm, it does ring a vague bell, but I can't put my finger on the story I'm afraid. I wonder if it was Somerset Maugham, he was quite prolific (I'd love to read some of his stories for the channel, but unfortunately his work is still under copyright so I can't do it for KZbin). I'm hoping to do some reading while I'm on tour this year, so I'll keep an eye out for this one!

I am repeatedly surprised by writings from over 100 years ago in some cases... In the United Kingdom, (these usually take place in England, and most often in London, though the characters, especially Sherlock Holmes and Dr watson, seem to do quite a bit of traveling to "the country", nether regions, and with some frequency)... at the use of terms of measurement, like miles and yards, and inches, even ounces(?) when I thought you guys more so did meters and grams, liters and kilometers. Or is that just Australia? In addition, I have noticed the use of the word 'vacation', the word we in America generally use for school breaks and scheduled time off of work, being used with exactly that meaning when I think I generally hear y'all say holiday/s, as in "school holidays"~which we refer to as 'summer vacation', 'Christmas vacation', etc. we also celebrate things like"Memorial Day weekend", which, formally, honors our war dead, but unofficially, always marks the beginning of Summer~the season~, although the third week in june, and school, for grades k-12, generally continues for another week to 10 days or so, depending upon the number of snow days, etc., which have to be made up, while "Labor Day weekend" which again, officially, celebrates the American labor force(by giving them a 'day off'), and bookmarks the end of summer, although not officially ending until around the 21st of September, kids are back in school either the Wednesday before or the Wednesday after Labor Day... Which always falls on a Monday, lol, While you have similar, with your May and August bank holidays, I believe. Anyway, meh~just a rather boring observance. Also, we've adopted so much slang/common phrases from you in the last several years, consequently, we all sound a lot smarter and a wee bit wttier!
@BitesizedAudio2 ай бұрын
Metres, kilometres etc are used a little bit here, but they're mainly a mainland European thing... traditionally Britain has used imperial measures and only adopted metric officially in the 1970s... but most people still say miles, feet, yards etc...
