Fun fact: The storybook at the end of the movie that starts the closing credits sequence is the ACTUAL book that was used in the beginning and ending of the original film. The people who made this remake were able to go into the Disney archives a.k.a. the Disney Vault and find it. And as a side note, the opening and closing sequences of the remake were just incredible.

Ha! I was at a writer's panel recently where a woman complained that people told her she had to make her female character likable; "you'd never have to do that with a male character!" and then I thought about it and realized any major character has to be likable even/especially the villains. The heroes (m/f) can be assholes but there has to be something to make you care, the villains can be and often are incredibly charming. We won't care as much about the story of we don't find the characters at least somewhat likable.

i agree with Matt that the music was more considered an after thought....however i'm fine with it being there. we're talking a multi-billion dollar dream machine that invented childhood nostalgia on a universal scope. from wind-swept streets of Tel Aviv to the polluted air of Beijing to suburban streets of Winnipeg you say "Jungle Book" and those Bear Necessities will come to life....and Disney full well knows this. i think what the goals from the get-go were to make something fun and entertaining, allow the light-hearted nostalgic throwbacks to be a highlight, and the biggest: an overall positive experience that causes a desire to go back to the original. Disney's focus seems to be either faithful throwback, or off the rails retelling (Cinderella is faithful, Maleficent is literally "lets make Wicked, but instead of Wizard of Oz have it be Sleeping Beauty")...and in the end, the faithful throwbacks are getting more butts in the seats. it doesn't matter how well Bill Murry can sing Bear Necessities, because it's the difference between "ill wait for the DVD" and "hey, why not" for MOST people.

Oof, so harsh on Sorry To Bother You! Is it an aversion to fantastical realism? I wish you'd expounded more on what you specifically thought Boots Riley did wrong. I hope you visit it again someday Matt. Having worked in so many similar industries to the one in the film--that feeling of going crazy in the face of the powerful, inhumane nature of modern corporations--so familiar. I'm fairly light-skinned for a Latinx person, yet I've used the "white voice" at work (and before that in school) so much. I found the absurdity of it all hilarious yet real. It also reminded me of Get Out, as far as being commentary on race that (unlike Green Book or Blackkklansman) was completely unafraid of making white folks super uncomfortable. There was no "white guy who comes to realize that POC are oppressed, thus changing his ways and becoming a powerful ally." Instead, it was about Cash giving into temptation, and finding out about how far he'd have to go to achiece his own selfish desires against the greater good. Plus I loved the fact that they used mostly white actors to show how "awesome" the company's version of slavery would be. That modern slavery won't necessarily be about color, but about financial power. So many tiny details go into hitting home the film's points, more than in the dialogue/plot, but in the cinematography, set design, and costumes. The movie was so, SO weird, yet still managed to be clear in what it was saying. My main criticism with the film was actually the treatment of Tessa Thompson's character. She sadly ends up just becoming something that Cash and Steve Yuen's character fight over. She seems to lose a lot of her agency somewhere along the road, falling into a much more background position than I thought she was going to have. That might be more nitpicky, though, since it's Cash's story, not hers. Still, though.

Interesting observations on FWWM. The first 20 min. portion is my favorite part of the movie, probably because it’s stuffed with the best Lynchian weird bits I like that are spread around all of his movies. Chris Isaak is a block of wood but it suits the character and works next to Sutherland’s nerdy creation. But, even though I’m a big fan of Lynch, Twin Peaks has never interested me. I’ve started watching the series probably four times now and always quit caring a few episodes in. I saw FWWM with my girlfriend at the time who thankfully knew all of the characters and could explain to me what was going on. After the first 20 min intro portion I found the rest of the movie dreary watching with a few interesting bits thrown in. It’s been about 20 years or so since my last watch and have digested a lot more Lynch in between so maybe it’s time for a rewatch.

Part of why so many people don't like FWWM could be that it's female horror. Not by women for women, but about the terror women face in adolescence, whether it's your first period or being assaulted by a weird pedophile demon thing. Twin Peaks can be unsettling to us, but Laura's disgust, dread, confusion, and guilt are different from everyone else's in town. For example, her death in the show is all quick cuts in the dark and creepy faces and noises. But in the movie it's operatic, bright and Laura looks younger. The dark bits from the tv show weren't illuminated for the screen and sold as a new film. It's pretty much the death of a different person; Laura's Laura, not Twin Peaks' Laura. But to be fair it's one of my favourite horror movies, so I'll make all kinds of excuses for it.

Wow, Matt's reaction to Fire Walk With Me was a surprise. I found the movie frustrating at first too, though I always do with Lynch's projects. What I liked about the movie was the personalized account of Laura's death, as told from her point of view. We had so much speculation and outsiders' perspectives in the show, but we never got to see the straight story (See what I did there?). I also like how they get more in depth on Leland's psyche, and add some ambiguity to how much control Bob might actually have. Also, the Philip Jeffries/Convenience Store scenes are handled much better in their full edits from The Missing Pieces.
