In season four, Miguel brought up Rocky 3 in an effort to encourage Johnny to keep working with Daniel. In the same season Johnny was training for his big fight with Daniel to "Burning Heart," which was prominent in Rocky 4. I think the limo scene was a great addition, and the fact that the episode was called "Survivors" was neat too. More I see this scene more I’m touched. I think it’s the better ending of Karate Kid saga, with Daniel who seems to become adult before our eyes, his karate is mature at this moment, and after this fight we could say that Daniel now a karate master who could continue to grow by himself, by his own. The torch has been passed. Daniel grew throughout the saga but this fight, and especially his opponent's lack of respect towards his sensei Miyagi, was a trigger that allowed him to bring out everything he had learned at once. Miyagi is proud of his student and spiritual son before the end of this match, because he saw that Daniel don’t lose karate ethic and values, that he is not afraid, calm and focus at the right moment. Even if Daniel had lost, Miyagi would have been proud of him. As Daniel won, Miyagi is all the more proud and at the same time happy and relieved. Both break down the last barriers between them by hugging each other. So, there are lot of lessons and emotions in this short scene. First time I saw this scene I didn’t understand all that but I already liked it very much. Since I saw it several times (and in particular others scenes of Karate Kid trilogie), I grew and I learned to enjoy deeply more and more these kind of scenes. I think it’s almost same things for lot of others Karate Kid’s fans like you. These Karate Kid films occupy an important and special place in us, we have grown and matured with them (just like with other works - films, series, books and others - that have been able to serve as benchmarks for us and which continue to do so for some).

On the Rifftrax of this movie: "I think it's safe to say he could hit him with a folding chair at this point!"
@@foxmcclout1503 I know man, I know! On the first few watches thats what I thought. Over time though, what I think is that Daniel is suffering from PTSD. He fought to the death in Okanawa and returns to America traumatised by it. When he has to face Mike Barnes, Mike (unlike Johnny who was emotionally invested in a love rival and Chowzen who felt his honour had been disgraced), is emotionally uninvested in fighting Daniel. Its strictly business and he is hungry to succeed. He also is the national champion rather than regional. So he is the only opponent Daniel has faced with absolute focus and also is expected the most skilled fighter Daniel has faced. This doesnt really come across as in every scene there is a physical confrontation between the two, Daniel pulls his punches (due to fear I suppose) and seems to get dominated easily. Daniel in this film is emotionally unbalanced - having fought for his life, he returns having broken up with Ali and trying to figure out his place in the world. He is originally lured in by the idea of the All Valey due to the allure of "celebrity" that comes with competition. After Miyagi refuses to train him, he then becomes brainwashed by two other men suffering from PTSD - Terry Silva and through Terry, Kreese. This film is as much about a weak mind than it is a weak body. When the film ends with Daniel overcoming his fear of the Cobra Kai (which in this movie really represents male dominance through violence), overcoming his fear of being alone (this is the first film where there is no love interest) and regaining stability, we see a character arc. Like the Bonzai tree in this film, Daniel is indeed broken. But like that same tree, what is broken can be fixed and we see this play out. As long as, like Miyagi says, the tree "...has strong root." And in this case, that strong root is Miyagis teachings. When Barnes yells at him in those final scenes, "Get up Laruso! Your teachers Karate is shit. I own you." There is a shift. Miyagi tells Daniel prior to this that its acceptable to lose to an opponent but not to fear. This is the moment Daniel realises nobody can own him if he is not bound by fear. So its fitting that Daniel beats Barnes using Kata, the foundation of Miyagi's karate, the root if you will. Rather than give the message that after becoming regional champion and winning a real life street fight in Okonowa, Daniel rides off into the sunset happily ever after, the third film's message is this: Life is not about winning but finding inner harmony. Balance. Feeling secure in mind and body. It's about overcoming our fears and insecurities and not allowing those fears to unbalance us along the way. Which brings me back to my original point...this film is about PTSD/Trauma...which is a chemical imbalance. Rewatch it with this in mind and observe Daniel's behaviour throughout. Anyway, I love this trilogy.

@@FodorPupil Daniel pretty much held his own against Chozen a number of times throughout the movie. Daniel humiliated him by exposing him to the villagers as a crook, by winning the forced bet by breaking all of the ice, and Daniel uppercutted his balls and left him and his friends momentarily incapacitated on the floor of the dance club. Daniel had taken up valuable real estate in Chozen's head. During the death match, Daniel was getting some decent hits in even before the drum technique came into play. Daniel never had anywhere near the same kind of success with Barnes. Barnes absolutely Dominated him from the first time they met at the Bonsai store until the final moments at the tournament.
@Wisconsinlife4 жыл бұрын
I don’t think we really know for sure if Chozen was better than Mike at karate or not. Throughout KK3 Terry Silver broke down Daniel which is why he struggled against Mike so much, he was off balance and let fear get the better of him. In KK2 the drum helped him focus and finish Chozen off.

After watching Cobra Kai, I can actually forgive the whole “Daniel being afraid of Barnes after fighting Chozen” thing. You understand how much psychological warfare and torment Silver put Daniel through and it makes more sense
@castortroy77042 жыл бұрын
Right. I think as kids, Mike Barnes was Daniel's most formidable, strongest and skilled opponent with Chozen as a close second. But now as adults Chozen would've eventually beaten Mike in their martial arts fight if not for Daniel's interference. But as kids, street fight scenario, Barnes would've beaten Chozen but it would've been a very close, narrow, brutal, bloody, evenly matched brawl. I think if Daniel in Karate Kid part 3 wasn't borderline overweight and out of shape, out of practice and broken by Terry Silver's mind games, Daniel would've put up a far much better, worthy, tougher fight and it would have been a competitive fight but Mike would've won still. Although one point for Daniel is using Mr. Miyagi's kata counter attack to best Mike in the finale of the tournament was brilliant. Only time Daniel could land one strike on Mike the whole film excluding two free shots Mike let Daniel score on him in Miyagi's boys shop. Which were weak and ineffective to Barnes.

Ralph and Pat had a real chemistry that sold the emotional weight and believability of the entire saga.

It had to be that way, it sucks I know, for the last point to make sense. It wasn't Barnes' karate that was superior, it was his brute strength and intimidation that gave him the edge. Did you see anything out of Barnes that suggest his karate skills was so much greater? No, right. Instead of demonstrating or teaching Daniel some exotic fighting technique, like the crane kick in KK1 or the drum punch in KK2, Miyagi decided on kata or forms instead, which isn't really a technique. Miyagi understood Daniel's problem was that he was terrified of Barnes' aggression so the kata was a tool to help calm Daniel down and restore his focus. By taking fear out of the equation, Daniel's confidence was restored.

Pummling wise maybe, but he didn’t score any points. Then there was no time left, and he failed to score any legal points. It’s ridiculous they didn’t disqualify him after all that intentional illegality. Hilarious. I still get a kick out of the first three films though. It’s good cheese.

Against Chozen, the way of his teaching was not jostled. Daniel was scared, but had a definite goal, that of saving Kumiko in the first place too. There, Daniel was slowly manipulated by Silver, and psychologically, he engaged him in a path of Karate which is not his. At least not the one that emphasizes the balance that Miyagi taught him. It's as if a compass goes wrong. In fact, I think he wasn't afraid of Barnes, but mostly of of the foreign path (or the void) on which he was taken. Or what he could become if he had continued with Silver (Knowing also that the latter is quite psycho). He just needed to calm down, then refocus on his own karate and personal balance.
