Keith is such a cool dude. About 12 years ago I auditioned for American Idol in Chicago. I made it past the producer auditions and got a chance to do the TV audition. I was very raw and the audition did not go as well as I would have liked. Randy, Mariah, and Nicky gave me curt "no's" but Keith took the time to talk to me. He asked if I had ever got voice lessons. I said I had not and was untrained. He encouraged me to get some training and said he heard an instrument that could be developed but had not been trained. I was devastated at the time but I held to his advice sought out a voice teacher and began a path of learning how to sing and finding so much more enjoyment in music. I am grateful that he encouraged me that I could be better. Those judges work long days on those auditions and he didn't have to take the time but I think he remembers all the encouragement he received and how much it helped him.
@ambsat3 ай бұрын
He was such a good, compassionate judge and his authentically being a fan of music, and "feeling" toward the contestants came through. He just seems like a good dude. Tks for sharing that story and I'm glad his "mentoring" advice helped you on your musical journey. Shows how for an artist, or just someone yearning to try and do something, how delicate a thing it is for them to put things out there and how easily a word, opinion, coming from anyone, insensitive or helpful, can truly make an impression and difference.

I immediately remembered seeing a young boy playing in a cover band on a truck bed outside of the Bundaberg distillery in Queensland many years ago. At that time I had no idea who he was and didn’t even know he could sing. Over the years that young boy turned into a musician that continues to warm my heart, not just for his music but for the joy, enthusiasm and humility he brings to his art. Keith's Crossroads "duet" with John Mayer was absolutely top and for anyone who doesn't know how great a guitar player he is, watching him with Mayer tells you all you need to know. If I had my wish, Mr Urban and Mr Mayer would tour together from time to time, especially here in England and Europe and I know the demand for tickets would be enormous. For me, it's guitars first, but they are great singers, harmonise together like they were born to it and the combination of Urban and Mayer songs is second to none. I just need some ruby slippers to make my wish on...

Glad to see this one. In my Nashville years, I was supporting Curb records artist, Shane McAnally and wound up on a radio station promo gig with Keith, who had just launched his solo career after his band The Ranch had folded, in Mobile, Alabama. After out set, Keith came up and paid me some nice compliments on my playing and I returned them after his set. We stayed at the same hotel and hit the Waffle House after the gig and jammed in a hotel room until the wee hours. Months later, I ran into him at the Sportsman's Grille restaurant in Nashville and we had a brief reunion in the parking lot where I was letting my dog out of the car and he said how much he loved my dog. We wound up on festival bills several times over the years and I have enjoyed watching him blossom as an artist and achieve such success.

A good friend wrote one of Keith's biggest hits. And Dan Huff is an amazing producer! Another great interview, Rick!

Great interview! Keith is as real as his music! I recently heard Keith on the show "Opry". It was just him and an acoustic guitar. Stripped down or with a band his talent shines through.

Watching from Australia, Rick. Great interview. Right up there with your Tommy Emmanuel video. If you ever make it out here, please look out for Ian Moss and Chris Cheney. Two more of our finest.
