i was told to use your back muscles and not use your traps "at all." but every time i do it my traps automatically start flexing. my question is, when that happens i'm also using my back muscles. is it really that important that i don't use my traps or is it okay if im at least using both my back and traps?

Hangtime, great question. I would refer to a physical therapist for that one. Using your traps and upper back should be ok in my opinion as long as your traps are not dominating the movement. But again a physical therapist would be able to trouble shoot that better than me.

I think she said LATS, not traps. Think to suck shoulder in socket and squeeze the lats, it wont be comfortable, if you're new to the position(cramping). fantastic press. though.
