Oh man, I remember when we got digital music, CDJ's and CD burners. Me and my buddy burned our entire combined DJ library (twice the fat UDG CD folder full, one for each of us) WITH CD STICKERS with logo's on 'm, color coded :-). Then Mixmeister came out, which could analyse tracks and write the BPM to the ID1tag, and we redid our entire library CD project and arranged all the songs on BPM. That was such a gamechanger, especially because we mixed all types of music together, from funk, to hiphop to disco to electro to techno (and many weird things in between), and now we suddenly knew which songs would easily fit together. Man we were so proud of our CD folders :-). They actually gave us DJ superpowers for a little while.

DJ TLM is 100% right with this. Have your tracks analyzed & cue points set up & a good folder structure for genre, era's etc and you should not need to dj from a track list. If I dj from a list I feel like a robot, play song 1, then song 2, etc.. boooooring LOL.

I play drums as well. I have been drumming for 2 years and DJing for a year and a half. I've wanted to do both for as long as I remember. I didn't understand what a DJ did until I started drumming. It was a win-win!

when you start djing i also advice to a beginner to start forestalling and stick with it. If you don't its a headache cause once you have to go b2b or do a spontaneous set somewere your screwed. Preparing sets is good for the learning curve or podcasts, online studio stream set.

Love this! I just started DJ'ing a month ago and really like your videos. I know music, it is my life and I freestyle as well. Dont know how I could any other way with some preparations. I did my first gig last weekend at a Hip Hop club ( I convinced them) and let me tell you, I was on fire! I experimented to see what worked early on before it got busy lol that was cool. I dropped the ball once on a track bc someone was requesting and I was trying to be accommodating. What a rush! I got calls to DJ there once or twice a week and at a few other spots and I did this on a whim and really wish I started doing this when I was 15. Your videos and your attitude really boosted my confidence. Thank you!

25 years I'm doing this. Same background, same story. The preparation for me also include tags, years, keys and personnal comments. The more data I have on a song the more wiser are my choices. The BPM sorting can also be a trap, beware, I see some guys always playing the same track in the same order because the BPM are following.

Been doing this since 1985 and I also started when there were no genres you played. Of course there were genres, but not that you kept to one through the night. It was based on what's popular and that included everything from soul/disco to synth/rock/pop. Electronic music was still developing and as a DJ, I followed the evolution and as of today I do a lot of different styles. Sometimes I keep to one genre and other times I mix several or many genres and that has kept me going and I still think it's the best job in the world. I recognize myself in everything you're saying and I love watching your videos. For me, the key to freestyle, beside knowing you're music and doing the preparations, is to know how to actually do a lot of different transitions. I don't scratch, so I've had to learn other ways to play/mix low beat genres. Playing a lot of party tracks with sing-a-long parts, I learned how to drop it on the one, and also to use vocal drop-ins. That, with some beat matching, also works fine with Hip-hop/RnB/Reggaeton. I'm more of a long transitions house DJ, but knowing different mixing techniques let's me play just about anything I want. I love exploring new styles and every time, I get a little bit further as a DJ. So, be open minded and listen to other DJs playing. Good music can be found in any genre. Listen, learn and practise.

yes... never really use prepared sets.. when I do wedding and other private events I just ask what genre of music are they expected. .. it's usually 3 to 4 different ones... but as the night progresses i might get into all kinds of genres. it's all about reading the crowd and going with the flow.... WHAT UP "XL"... THATS MY BOI RIGHT THUR!

I got back into mixing after about 25 years and it’s been a couple of years now that I’ve been playing at home. My progress feels slow , I can get off a couple or few good mixes but then it’s not long before I mess one up bad. I was strictly mixing house music at first and it went well now I’m getting into looping and mixing hip hop and r&b and it just sounds bad sometimes. I do mainly freestyle and this may be part of my problem. I’m going to completely restructure my folders with music I know and thencreate smart folders and set cue points. I think I’m just overloaded with music and kind of lost at times. Good video, kind of made me think of what and where I’m at and where I need to be. I’m a big fan of your videos, keep sharing the knowledge brother.

I remember in the past when I come across this situation and I have a lot at times. I start brainstorming and ideas of a few songs come to mind but I hesitate and after 30 minutes or so I say "what the heck", play one of the songs in my mind and then, BAM!!!! The crowd finally react. Smh.

I love how you see the things from both sides, and give different advices to the people so they can coose what they want. That makes you a very good tutor I think. I'm dj-ing since 5-6 years but I haven't do it in any club yet, just at house-parties and home. I've tried also preparing my set (the tracklist) and doing it freestyle. When I played a prepared set, it was just not entertaining for me, and even the transitions seemed not that good what I thought. Then I decided that I'll just do it from my head and play what I want at the moment. Now I'm very happy with it, and even when I've mixed before the actual track with an another and it have sounded great, I try to search something else and see if it works. However, I'm missing the cue-points on my equipment, sometimes it will be very good to have some points where I can quickly jump to. It's not impossible to make a jump in the song to a point (I have CD-players, two CDJ 800 and one CDJ-100s), but with the cue-points and some practice, I could make it in a more creative way i think. I have not heard that it is called freestyle mixing, just thought that it is the good decision for me, the way I like it, I think everyone should try both preparing and that freestyle mixing. (Btw sorry I dont know how bad/not so bad my english is)

I am doing it the way you do it: Before the party or whatever i make a new playlist where i throw in some new shit or whishes i got before the party and then i'm doing everything from scratch, maybe prepare the times when which kind of music is gonna be played, but not more. Sometimes i don't even play one of those chosen tracks.

Yea I started out with records back in 1989 and I knew what was fast, mid or slow. Never had played with a tracklist and I never knew what the bpm of the songs. I always do freestyle djing because you have anticipate what the crowd want to here. I will have a crate of songs that I will play but I will go into my other crates if necessary. Like you mention I also have my songs arranged by bpm so that its quicker to mix.

Another option is to build your tracklist as you go. A trap I kept running into was I play two-hour sets at a virtual club in Second Life. I start with the intention of starting mellow, moving to banging high-energy trance, to energetic deep melodic trance, sometimes to psychedelic trance, to uplifting trance, or something like that, it varies each time. But I never get to put all that in because I might get carried away picking high energy trance tracks, or deep melodic trance tracks or whatever. Other times, I'm like, "What in the world do I want to play?" And I only have so much time to pick a song before the current track plays out. It never happened much for me, but I hate to be in that situation where I have to pick something quick and I don't know what to pick, and I might pick just the wrong song, or pick something that doesn't go over well. My solution is to build a track list as I go. Say I'm in the middle of a set. I decide, okay, I want to play deep trance for another 20 minutes, then finish with about 3 uplifting trance tracks. During my free time between transitions, when I'm not playing with the flange effect at high points like build-ups, I start adding tracks that I know go together or previewing tracks to find one, adding up how much time each track is in my head, and adding and removing songs from there. But I'm also flexible enough that I might think, "Ooh, this song has a nice summer feel. I know what would go great with this," So I find that song and either put it on my side list or load it on the inactive deck, which may mean removing another song from the side list. If I get a request, which I haven't really had one yet interestingly enough, or think of a song that I just gotta play but it's early to play it, I'll just put it at the bottom of the side list in order as I receive them or think of them. I might not necessarily play them in that order, but once I get to the point I can play it and I start picking other songs to go with it, I move them in the order I want to play them. That's debatable if that's really freestyle or not, but I say if you're flexible it's close enoug to freestyle. That's one way to go about getting used to freestyle.

It's funny you mentioned you were a drummer. I was a musician before I became a DJ. I played drums and guitars. The Only way I learn how to DJ was to freestyle. I never had a mentor, I had no one that paid attention to me when I ask for help. All I did was practice on my controller till I became better at beat-matching then went straight from controller to two turntables and the S9 mixer then learn how to scratch. I could play a song in my head and find five different songs that will match the same BPM same, mood, and same structure

I like 50-50 - I do freestyle, but while freestyling I find things that work great together, so I use those another time. a lot of times I want to go to these "perfect" mixes, but then I have this voice in my head "if you will play this list, I will kick you in the nuts", so I freestyle again. It's cool to have a few 20 minute "perfect" mixes, they are great when the crowd is hyped and you can mix like 20 songs in 20 minutes, so the crowd is hyped even more, but sometimes it feels like cheating. I think when you play at the club, there are 3 groups you play for - the crowd, the staff and yourself. Sometimes you have to sacrifice one to please another one, for example, freestyling is good if you're a resident DJ at some place, so the staff doesn't see the patterns. Sometimes you play a track that you hate, but you know it will work in this crowd.

The hardest thing to find, in my opinion, are transition tracks (128bpm to 70bpm). I probably have 4 ways to go from house to reggae, but I'm searching for more. Something like Daft Punk - Around the World (122bpm house) mixed with Mato - Around the World (122 reggae, but double down, and then go to any reggae track easy. Do you have any tips on this kind of mixing between genres?
@RiddyOnline
@RiddyOnline 7 жыл бұрын
at the end of the day, as long as the BPM is similar..try to transition from the current genre you're in, into a popular track of the next genre...that's what I try to do. A common genre transition that I do is house -> soca -> afrobeat....all are similar tempos but totally different genres of music.

Hi from Turkey It must be good to see that you have fans from all around the world :) I am not a turntablist but we have exactly the same djying style. (i am trying to be a turntablist with your videos after 36 years old :) ) I always say that dj do not make music, it is the people who are there to listen dj. dj's job is reading their souls. If you are playing in a big place its always ok, more people more fun. But when there is about 100- 200 people you have to understand what most of the crowd wants. If you can make %60 of them go crazy rest will join them. What do i do to catch their music type: I inspect Their clothes Dance styles Reactions to the diffrent type of songs that i play( i call those "bate songs") Even their drinks. One more trick to earn people is playing songs that they can sing loudly. That connects dj and the crowd. Shared my knowladge :) Thanks for all your sharings... peace

Greetings. I know nothing about dj-ing and turntables and controllers. But I have done parties on my Ipad because I'm known as the man with the music because my ipod has 10,000+ songs on it. I hook it up to my Bluetooth speakers and we're rocking. I absolutely know what to play and what not to play. And I am never wrong. I bought a Pioneer ddj-sb2 and this thing looks as foreign to me as eating with chopsticks. Here is my question, is it going to take hours on hours to learn how to use this? Preparing tracks and all that is just not something I'm going to do, so I'm 100% freestyle. Did I take the wrong direction and should just stick to Ipad djay?

I am wondering, I am a starting DJ still practicing in the house, and I maybe want to start playing live in the future, but now I found sometimes I have some like spare times, where I dont have anything to do basicly, But what to do at those moments where you have the next song ready, and you have nothing to do becouse if you do nothing It looks unprofesional, right? Greetings from the Netherlands :D

Do you do only beats per Folder or also by key? I also have a off question. On a DJ controller, I have a ns7. How much looseness should the platters be? I took them off to clean and I don't think they are adjusted correctly.

TLM! I gotta question for u. now I just a little new to the whole DJ scene, but I haven't done parties or such yet. I still got a lot to work for. but my question is do I need to know more about computers to do the dj aspect side? I mean this day and age everyone knows how to use computers, but I'm talking about in depth wise. thank you so much and I love ur videos!

+taco salad (gangsta_tip) Not really. I've been spinning for about 10 years now. I started with 2 Stanton T80's and a basic 2 channel mixer. I used records starting out. Beat matching and all that. Then I got my computer and started using Serato Scratch live. So I learned the basics without the computer first, then once I got it, that came easy. Lots of DJ's I've seen know how to use the computer, but don't know how to NOT use the computer. If that makes sense. Don't get me wrong, there is no issue with using and or learning both. I just figured, I had to know where I came from to know where I was going.

True I understand :) Learning the old school way must be the better way! I never really had a lot of practice on virtual DJ 8 or one of those DJ apps on my phone but I am learning how to finger drum on the MPC! Well, I don't happen to own 1 but I have drum pads 24 on my android to practice. It may look easy when other finger drummers perform but it's kinda hard. Even when I building speed from time to time

You gotta start somewhere right? I'm 34 and I started out writing when I was 14. Then I got in to production making beats when I was 17. I didn't want to have to depend on people to make beats for me. Then once I got settled in a house of my own, I bought my first set of decks. I already had a insight of music from production, so DJ'ing came to me a little easier. I am not knocking anybody for how the learn. Respect to you Bro!!

I was actually planning on being a freestyle DJ, but is it good to switch genres of music in one mix though?

Janis Dumins You should feel free to do whatever you want. If it works all depends on the crowd you're playing for (and the type of event). In most of my sets I will play Hip Hop, R&B and some Dancehall, but at some events it will be Hip Hop, R&B, DanceHall, 2Step, Trap, Electro, Latin or whatever I think I can throw at the crowd.

which version of serato are you trying to use.... Serato Scratch has limits.... Serato DJ is working fine for me, i have about the same amount of music.... you can import in pieces... import... close... do it again til yer finished... how much ram do you have? MUST have 8 gb or better to deal with a library of that size... i7 processor.... i5s give issues... mac or pc?

Freestyle is a genre, you mean open format.
@djTLMtv
@djTLMtv 6 жыл бұрын
No, I don’t mean open format. I mean freestyle. When I say freestyle I mean playing without restrictions (of a playlist), improvising as you read the crowd’s reaction. Open format is more about being able to play any genre in your set.
