For the true connoisseurs of the series, the real kid for Lassie was Jeff. Timmy was a Johnny-come-lately. And for the record, the real Stooges were Moe, Larry and Curly. Not Shemp and especially not Curly Joe.

For someone who learned about the series in college (M.A. in The Science of Modern History), and only started watching it occasionally about 10 years ago, would you be so kind as to fill me in about Lassie’s time with Jeff; why he was replaced; all the details? @@katherinea.williams3044 "Jeff", played by Tommy Rettig, was the original owner of Lassie in the TV series. I think that was 1954 to 57. Then came Timmy for about the next 5 years. He was played by Jon Provost. I was born in 1950 (almost before the invention of the lightbulb). And in the prime of my Lassie-watching youth, age 4 to 7, Tommy Rettig was the boy in the series. When I got slightly older, I preferred shows such as Rawhide and then The Twilight Zone. In those years, Lassie, then with "Timmy", was something my younger sisters would watch. But Timmy, played by Jon Provost, seemed less rough-and-tumble when compared to Jeff. These days, Jon Provost is still around and doing a few appearances. Tommy Rettig died 25 years ago. When my sisters and I get together, as a joke someone will bring up the Lassie series from over 60 years ago and we will have some laughs as we compare Timmy with Jeff. No one under the age of 60 could possibly understand how there could be anything amusing about something so trivial in a TV series from such a long-ago.

@@katherinea.williams3044 The original mother of Jeff, Mrs. Ellen Miller couldn't run the farm when her dad passed away so they were going to move to the city. Timmie was adopted by the Martins who bought the farm. The Miller's couldn't take Lassie with them so Jeff gave Lassie to Timmie.
