Aye don’t come at the millennials with this Steve! As a 29 year old millennial, one thing people don’t talk about very often is just how balanced we are between the old and new world. I grew up with that very same phone situation, except we also had internet which was tied to the phone line. Can’t be on the phone and the internet at the same time. Also in my childhood we eventually got a caller ID so we could at least see who is calling. Still no cell phone in my broke ass household though! Only adults had pagers, and when I finally did get a cell phone I was in high school. And guess what! No internet on that phone, texting was 10c a message, and call was limited by minutes. So all through high school I was still constrained with the very same constraints you had back in the 60’s-70’s except I also had email and limited use of a personal phone. Still prefer you call the house phone! But of course by high school we had call waiting and caller ID and all that good stuff. So don’t go thinking us millennials had it all good all the time. We got the best of both worlds!

I see GenZ pretty balanced. Millenials tends to come off entitled and annoyed. Gen X experienced both worlds, grew up one way, then experienced the transition through college. Millenials came afterwards and just seem lost as if somethign should have been and wasn't and they "suffered". GenX embraced the transition very well. GenX is my favorite generation together with GenZ. GenZ grow up with information at the palm of their hands since day 1. So they know at 10 years old what millenials started to get at age 25. Hence, GenZ also mature earlier. Are very entrepenurial, hard working, seldom complain, understand the shift and change and knows how to navigate people better. They are the smartest generation by far, and logically as they get more, much more information much earlier, and are not focused in the emotions, "poor me" entitlement of things, they achieve more, sooner. Millenials are smart but too focus on their feelings, which pulls them back so bad.

if your kids ask "did you ever (activity) when you were my age?", they're probably doing it already, but don't want to tell you directly - and when they get caught (and they will), first thing out they mouth will be "why am I getting in trouble? you did it too..."

One of the problems with this idea is it becomes a bad habit to not tell your kids anything. Eventually they start lying causing a bad relationship with the kids. Tell your kids everything but in a proper way.

I disagree with this. I wish my parents told me more about their experiences, because it would make them more relatable. I never used anything I’ve learned about them against them, it actually made me feel closer to them knowing they struggled with the same things I’m struggling with.
@raguellagrande7344
@raguellagrande7344 3 жыл бұрын
it's not about using it against them. It's about being a role model. Not everyone is the same, but when Steve tells his son he's never snuck out of the house it is because he doesn't want to put into his son's mind that boys are supposed to sneak out of the house. Good for you that you wanted to relate more to your parents, but parents can't tell you the bad things they did until you've already had your own life lessons in that specific regard, and even them most of the time they can only be there for you because sharing their experience while you're in pain from that life lesson is bad timing to share experiences. When my oldest sister was young and times were tough for my parents, my mom once confided in her about how she used to have lots of attention from guys and (my sister didn't tell me any specifics) several occasions which told my sister that my mom was definitely no angel before she met my dad. My sister, being the oldest and also tasked with caretaking and the like, neither wanted or needed this information from our mother. We were being raised christian and the biggest message in church was that you wait until marriage or AT LEAST being in love before having sex, but my mom literally told my sister that she was a hypocrite for sending us to church. It permanently lowered my sister's level of respect for my mother, and it also gave my sister cause to judge every decision my mom ever made. Parent's aren't their child's friend. Their sole purpose is to ensure you are a contributing member of society. Friendship comes once the kids are adults and the parents don't have to constantly worry if you're still breathing at night, have enough to eat, doing well in school, etc. etc. You can not be an authority figure and just jive like you're besties. It's just not how things work.

Eh, I disagree. I think it's better to be open about stuff, and explain the consequences you suffered as a result, so that they don't have to make the same mistakes. For example, telling your kids you snuck out, but that your parents woke up and found you gone one night, which prompted them to call the cops and report you missing, as well as to call and wake up all the neighbors and all your friends' parents looking for you, and then, when you finally did get home, you were told that you had to find another place to live because you couldn't follow the rules, while also having to witness the hurt and fear on your parents' faces...they can't then go and sneak out and then throw it in your face acting like they're doing it just cuz I did it...I didn't get away with it and it had lasting consequences, which they can no longer claim to be ignorant about. Or with cheating...why not just say, "yes, I cheated, and it was an easy, temporary solution, like a bandaid, but then I didn't learn the material, and my work ethic also suffered because I got used to taking the easy way out all the time, so when I got into the real world, it was a much tougher adjustment than it needed to be, because I didn't know how to find information for myself, and I gave up a lot when things felt like they were getting too hard. It's better to develop those skills now while you're young and your brain is malleable and more adaptive, than when you're older and it's harder to do away with old habits and form new ones." I 100% believe that it's better to have open and honest conversations between child and parent, to skip some of the unnecessary road rash. Children will always make their own mistakes, but if you can prevent them from at least repeating yours by thinking they can cut corners and break rules and get away with it because they genuinely don't know better, why wouldn't you?

Yeah, I'd rather my bf be honest with me if something's not flattering...and he will, he's blunt lol. There are times when he doesn't like an outfit and I love it and I'll say "well that's too damn bad" and wear it anyway (usually when I want to wear something really sparkly or flashy or less traditional in terms of silhouette...he hates that stuff but I love it, go figure). But if I ask his opinion, I know I'll get his honest answer about anything, and that's one of the things I love about him. No run around, no BS, no lies.

I'm sorry, but that don't make no sense: You don't want them to step into the same traps or make the same mistakes you did, so you're not going to tell them the mistakes you made? That's a contradiction. How about, you do tell them the mistakes you made so you can also share with them the lessons you learned from them, so they can learn them without having to walk through them? That makes more sense.
