I am Jewish and I can tell you that if the situation was opposite and Christians/Muslims were prosecuted just for being such I would hide them at my house even if it means certain death if I get caught. Right now I am proud to call myself Israeli but if my country will change it's face I would be ashamed to live here. My grandparents from both sides came from Romania. However I was born here in Israel, I could never see any other place as home. I can't imagine how difficult it is for people from N. Korea and China. I saw few documentaries about it but I believe it's only an ice tip compared to the big picture.

I'll always be grateful to my 9th grade history teacher for introducing me to the White Rose. He assigned us to do book reports, wheeling out a cart of WWII themed books, but pulled me aside to personally recommend a dense book on this subject. How well he judged me! The piece that stands out clearest is something Sophie wrote before her execution, of a dream she had. To paraphrase, she wrote that in her dream she was walking along a path, holding the hand of a child. Disaster struck, the ground shook and spit open. She had just enough time to set the child with her safe on the other side before she was swallowed up. She wrote she believed that child to be the cause of the White Rose and the surety that her death was not to be the end of the resistance and hope for freedom.

There were many paramilitary resistance movements around Europe at the time, but I wrote this episode to specifically focus on the anti-Nazi resistance movements.

My mother spent her entire life believing that she was German. After she had an ancestry test, it was found that she was almost entirely Polish. Both of her parents have passed, so questions concerning her heritage may forever go unanswered…

DNA tests don't show nationality nor do they account for historical border changes. Whatever the "Ancestry Test" companies want us believe, there's nothing genetic about nationality. If a test shows a high percentage of "polish", all it means is that that DNA sample is most similar to DNA samples from test takers currently located in Poland... Also, Polish borders changed dramatically during the first half of the 20th century. Many polish towns were officially part of Germany before WWII. That way, the birth place of many Germans born in the 20s and 30s, are now located in Poland (and the DNA ancestry of their descendants may show up as 'polish' rather than 'german). To add to the confusion: in those times 'German' and 'Polish' were frequently understood as linguistic ethnicities (what language do you speak) more than as national citizenship (what country do you vote in or have a passport from). Having that in mind, I wouldn't worry too much about the ancestry test if I were your mother... (Sorry for the long answer. Hope it helps).

@@ThePittsburghToddy The Germans took "Aryan" kids from polish families and gave them to German families during WWII but your mother is probably to young for that. A DNA test shows you to whom you are related (extended family), so dont read to much into anything other then that (sometimes they uncover that children were switched at birth, sometimes its complete nonsense)

@@ThePittsburghToddy For the majority of history, tribes and peoples migrated greatly in europe. Nationalism as we know it is barely 150 years old. Before that people identified with their town or region. The Baltic region around Poland was for a long time the Holy Roman Empire, then Prussian/Polish before becoming Germany and only after WW1 became Poland. Border regions on either side of the border are often more alike than different, with the only difference being primary language and passport. Having a single European national heritage is in of itself absurd. WIth the exception of Conan O'Brien, apparently he's 100% Irish.

I met a man many years ago researching his family tree. He was explaing the difficulty because his family migrated from Germany to the US and back, several times over several generations. He had dual citizenship. As a teenager the familiy was back in Germany and he was slated for Hitler's Youth. He managed to evade the organization knowing he would eventually be found out - he had Jewish ancestry. He was constripted into the German Army and sent to serve on the Russian Front - he was a US citizen. After the war he returned to the US as quickly as possible.

Great documentary with a lot of interesting facts! They were really heroes, but at the same time just normal young people who lived in this terrifying regime. Actually, Sophie Scholl's best friend, Susanne Zeller-Hirzel, who was sentenced to 5 months in jail for assisting the White Rose, stood with the islam-critical movement "Bürgerbewegung Pax Europa" in her last years. She said she saw many similarities between the ideologies of national socialism and political islam, like the concept of a "führer" figure and blind obedience, the hatred of Jews etc., and to her, islam growing in Europe was a great threat.

We watched a movie on the White Rose during a college history class. It was a something I hadn’t heard about before in previous classes and something that will stick with me for a long time.

It’s a shame that with how brutal WW1 was, no survivor who was ‘in the trenches’ could describe how much of a hell on earth it was. I think that helped to fuel the generational disconnect in Germany in the 1920’s -30’s, as it did in many other countries involved. The generation that fought in the trenches is known as the ‘lost generation’, because many on both sides were either killed in masses and barely 20, and the ones who came home were never quite the same. There was a lot of substance abuse due the trauma, and mental health wasn’t even a thing back. It was often the case where adults in their 30’s -40’s would sound crazy and paranoid at times to their children. There’s a scene in downfall that demonstrates this perfectly where a man who’s probably in his 40’s was trying to take his son home, but was met with resistance of those not even a full 20 years old. The man was trying to tell the actual children in SS getup who were ‘defending’ Berlin that they were basically f*cked, and to go home to have a chance of avoiding the Russians. It wasn’t explicitly said, but I think he had an idea of what the Russians would do to the city and much of the civilian population.😔

It's AMAZING how prescient some of those writings were/ are. Saying that the path they're on will end with Russians sitting in Berlin was, I think, the first _Fulfilled Prophecy,_ and they just kept coming after that!! At one point, however, one of them says something about there being 300,000 Jews killed in Poland. That's only 5% of the actual number (the final number of the final solution), but then again, it wasn't written in 1945, so it might have been an accurate count at the time. What I'd like to know is, where did they get those numbers from???? I seriously doubt that the Nazi party published updates of "Total number of Jews killed." If they did that, there would have also been "Jews Killed Today" lists as well as "Goal For Number of Jews Killed Tomorrow." It's ridiculous to think that the Nazis would publish such lists. So where then, did this group get the number of murdered Jews from?

They where active military youth (they serve sporadically, and not for long stretches). in different fronts and military groups, they did there thing when they where off duty. (they are more or less and active military intelligence/resistance group with eye and ears every where) they know more then the common person even more then the common foot soldier.
