I think that the glass of whiskey he enjoyed with the lady was tainted with the same thing that he threatened the client with. What do you think of this? After all Tilda was "preparing for this day* and requested "my bottle"

​@@sotnoscopesinteresting theory but I don't think Tilda Swinton would have had the ability and time to set that up. You don't keep lethal radioactive material on you just in case. It's possible another force did this to him off camera but I think it was more of a nervous tick him attempting to step into his new life. We don't know how it will go for him and it might not take.

It was pretty bland and underwhelming. I'm a huge fan of Fincher and this might be his worst film. Which doesn't mean it's bad. It's well executed, but that's all. There's not much depth or meaning as people are really forcing it to look like. It didn't feel like a Fincher film. At all. It lacks many qualities of his films. It lacks edge too. For a Fincher film, it's mediocre at best.

I watched it again and realized that he never intended to kill the billionaire- when he purchased the pistol off the “street vendor”, he told him he didn’t need any rounds when offered. I think that move suggests that his line of work and his code was slowly ebbing away. Plus the wave of police attention that would have ensued had he killed the billionaire would’ve been too much for him perhaps. However, If the billionaires”eyes” had suggested that he was lying…he probably would’ve killed him by hand (remember- he fought the brute).

I really enjoy Fincher and this might grow on me but overall this movie was pretty meh for me. With Fincher you're going to get some beautiful shots and great acting which we do but something was missing from this that left it feeling pretty empty like it's missing something, I'm sure Fincher was going for that as well, I remember in the beginning of the film saying something about how it's very boring, etc. It's hard to care about the main driving point of the plot when the very same people making the movie also don't care about it either lol. This felt a lot more like Fincher playing with the sound in multiple ways, using sounds as a reference as to your POV through the character and the sounds you would hear outside of that when our POV is say outside the car. But his playfulness with the sound like that became a distraction at least for me. I also don't think the movie is quite as basic as others are saying, the movie feels like it has something to say about how the middle class or above middle class are killing each other off and the main billionaire villain at the end who is the ultimate reason why this entire thing took place doesn't get murdered and walks away from the situation without as much as a scratch. It also has a lot to say about consumerism and how things like Doordash etc leave us completely open to unknown dangers etc. It's just difficult to stomach canceling Mindhunter for Mank and The Killer, not a good trade off at all IMO.

Not only did i struggle with connecting to the character as he casually kills people but he was so distant, there was nothing to grab on to. Once tilda gets in the movie i felt there was finally some life to the thing but idk, it was just okay for me

The Killer is not as complex as Fincher's most popular films - it's pretty straightforward, similar to Panic Room; but it still is an enjoyable ride, mostly because of Fassbender's performance.

The Irish Sunday Mail: "Regarding the case on Fassbender, LA county Steve Cooley continued the investigation after Andrews charges were dropped. Two unnamed witnesses were interviewed by victim services of LA county. DA. Cooley concluded, no evidence appeared in statute to require any investigation against the german born-irish actor. The actor gave a ICO.8 statement and no charges were filed."

Great review as always, but PRISONERS is not a David Fincher film. And the Zodiac poster you shown in your review is not Fincher's Zodiac - it's a poster from another zodiac movie. But just small details I point out, all in all, again, another great review.

Came here to say the same. Prisoners is Denis’s film but it does feel a bit like a Fincher film. I’d argue that Sicario, Prisoners, and Enemy are Denis’ holy triumvirate. And incidentally these 3 films are perhaps the best 3-fer by any director. Period.

It’s a masterpiece to me. The methodical unfolding of an obsessive mind whose deep rooted believes are questioned showing his own contradictions while reinforcing some of his quite cynical views about the few ruling the many. To put this creature of habit in this situation, making fun of him and seeing his steps denying every single tenet he has is really enjoyable. Especially because it’s not the usual redemption arc. 😅

The ending itself made the movie. The twitch of his face, while left for interpretation by the viewer, implies that somewhere along his path - likely from The Expert - he ingested a chemical that would lead to his death - caused by facial necrosis. It was so subtle and well done and completely elevated the movie. Great film, but I wish this video picked up on that detail.

Also she had her special bottle brought to the table but didn't drink from it. @@kokomanation I think Fischer’s point is that he’s been a successful hitman through his controlled lack of empathy. He kills the taxi driver and Swinton as planned despite empathizing with them. He’s not a cold stoned psycho (heart rate monitor, emotional about his gf, etc,) and yet is trying to emulate one to make his job bearable lol.

The whole movie revolves around whether the the central character is the Hunter who comes to the woods to kill or not. The whole opening scene focuses on a highly and prolonged hit job which mysteriously goes wrong. Surely there is ironic reflection here on the part of the director on that ever elusive perfect shot.

To me I feel like the final line implied that he was always one of the many. I guy being controlled by a higher up, almost ending his life due to a small communication error. The story about the bear is anacodal for how he didn't go for the ones who tried to kill him out of neccesity to survive, but pride, trying to compensate for his fuck up.

My interpretation was that there was the greatest risk of being caught given the client’s high profile. Some of the other victims weren’t responsible for what happened and yet they’re killed because he knows it’s easier than letting them live (stick to the plan).

You don't understand because you clearly can't see the obvious pragmatism of the main character. The Taxi driver knows where he lives, his face, his girlfriend. In the main characters view the driver was a loose end and knew too much. About the billionaire, he didn't know much of the details and he didn't know the main character, he was big risk to kill because of his money and status(the main character mentions that). The main character had also been seen on one his cameras which gave it even more risk.

Fassbender’s character in The Killer is very reminiscent of Walter White. His outfit, vocal cadence, demeanor and level of mastery over his job are signatures of Walt. The Killer kinda felt like El Camino in terms of its pacing and tempo.

The facial twitch was due to him being poisoned. When he cornered the expert in the restaurant, she asked for her special bottle, then never took a drink from it, (she had already received the flight of drinks), so what was that bottle for? He took the bait. Then she told him, on the way to her demise: "When you die, it won't be your life flashing before your eyes, it'll be mine". He very specifically and unnecessarily, mentioned death by facial necrosis to the billionaire and then the final scene a close up of his face - and there's a twitch. None of these details make sense unless she poisoned him. It's subtly done, but it is Fincher after all. It also fits with the general theme: he thinks he's a cool efficient, extremely competent killer, but he's not nearly as good as he thinks he is. "I only shoot when my pulse is below 60" - proceeds to show pulse is 65 He misses the target - this ones a bit less subtle :) He shoots his booking agent in the chest with nails - "Middle aged, non smoker, 180lbs, should have 6 to 7 minutes" - the guy dies in seconds - oops!. In Florida he had the huge advantage of surprise - yet he was the one who got jumped. He drank from the bottle the Expert had brought to the table, the one she didn't drink from. He says don't ask who or why - but can't help himself, sitting down with the Expert instead of just taking her out anonymously - she called him out on that too. Same thing with the billionaire - he breaks his own rules about never asking who or why. Ends up poisoned. Fincher has made a dark comedy, but its so dark and subtle enough, that it seems to have been mostly missed.

Well...I wish I could agree. I admire this film without actually liking it. Technical stuff and acting were top-notch (of course!), and the screenplay was tight and beautifully structured. I just couldn't connect with it, though. I really didn't care if the killer succeeded, which is troubling. I'm supposed to, right? Genuinely happy for all the people who enjoyed it. For what it's worth, I did watch it twice, just to make sure my initial impression wasn't misplaced. I really wanted to like it. But a second viewing didn't change my mind. For me, at least, _The Killer_ was a first-rate misfire. So to speak. On a tangential note - how did it cost so much? $150 million? Really?! I know company moves are expensive (at least three countries), but still. Small cast, no superstars (Fassbender is a fantastic actor, but I doubt he commands a huge salary), and not much in the way of obvious FX work - although, knowing Fincher, there may be a lot more CGI than was visible. Maybe Fincher himself cost the most. He's certainly worth it.

Disappointed. A hitman getting away with murdering his bosses and then retiring from the business is pure fiction. His final mistake was letting Claiborne go. In reality, the killer would be marked for death.

I really enjoyed this film (not sure if you can use that word any longer ) . I just wished it had been longer / more epic like the comic . I believe the comic is 13 or 14 *volumes* . Its very philosophical and cynical . The tone and elements of the source material are there . But , yeah , just wished it would have been longer . Hopefully Fincher and Fasbender will do a series .

I was a bit disappointed in the ending. It seemed anti-climactic. I was actually hoping that he wanted to talk to Tilda Sweeney (The Expert) and actually air his issues out with her; perhaps even proposing a new partnership since he had essentially burnt his own bridges. Whether she accepted or not was irrelevant but would have made his approaching her in a public place more sensible. I don't think courtesy was really his intent when he initially approached her. It would have really been interesting if she had agreed to a partnership and both went to take out the client in the end only to have her turn on him in favor of the client. I don't know. The ending just didn't feel deserved.

i dont know how he didnt use a small .22 kaliber semi auto rifle for the hit, as the target was something about 60m away. he could have put 4 bullets into the targets head without reloading in the same time he tried to reloadad and missed a 2nd chance..

I would call this a 'pop' masterclass. It isn't the deepest or most thought provoking film, and it's story runs a lot of WELL paved paths. It had serious John Wick/Taken vibes at times, but it did it sooooo much better. This is pretty much peak 'revenge' flick imo. And even a total film dummy who can only pay attention for 15 seconds at a time will enjoy it. The action scenes are well shot and quite well choreographed, and while the killer's strategies don't really hold up under review, they are believable and thought through enough to suspend disbelief. And getting to watch that restaurant scene between Fassbender and Swinton was chefs kiss.

It's similar to his view; "Forbid empathy, empathy is a weakness, weakness is vulnerability". He needed to do it because at that point he couldn't leave any trace behind even if he didn't want to take him out. Plus at that point he "trusted no-one"

I didn't take his letting the rich guy live because he decided he had no idea that a civilian would be targeted I take him at his word his statement was, the wealthier a person was the more involvement the police become and since apparently this man is very wealthy he would have had many people looking for who murder him maybe even the CIA or FBI depending upon what this man did in the business world.Not worth the risk.

Pretty good movie. Only silly bit was...we were lead to believe, the also highly capable killer, the Brute was smart enough to lay a trap but not enough to arm himself in lieu of hand to hand combat??

I don’t think it was a trap, I think he just saw Fassbender creeping around and got the jump on him from behind. Fassbender didn’t know the layout of the house obviously and must’ve missed him, another detail showing his skills were slipping.

The killer fucks up and goes against his wanky false-bravado inner monologue at almost every turn. He usually only gets out of the fucked up situations he gets himself into through miraculous movie-plot luck (another joke). He wastes all of the high-end low-risk detailing he does on jobs by failing to get the critical essentials right, despite constantly repeating cautions to himself in the form of delusional reassurance. Throughout the movie he fails to recognise, acknowledge and address his own shortcomings, which are so stacked by the end of the movie that it can't be anything other than comedic. Only at the end does he get to a position of potentially admitting that he is not exceptional, but even then it is non-committal and served with obvious insecurity at the thought (nervous eye twitch). The killer gets information regarding that the counter contract that was called on him is no longer a threat to him, but he persists with going after those people, and then when he gets to the client he lets him live in what he expects will be a tortuous paranoia, failing to realise that the man he threatens clearly has no qualms about calling contracts on people, so much so that he doesn't immediately realise who the killer is and why he's there. This immediately puts himself and his girlfriend back in more danger than they otherwise would have been, completely undoing the team-america-style promise he makes his girlfriends brother - "nothing like this will be ever allowed to happen again." This movie is a total joke at the rightful expense of hyper-individualised males who take their individuality as a sign of masculine strength and exceptionalism, rather than the political abasement and victimization that it actually is. Scared men pretending to be brave as usual.

you can give Fassbender a role about a rabbit looking for old tires in the desert and the movie would still be good. Nevertheless, the movie was very good as it was. just a dark psycho thriller

I think that The Killer miss th target purposely , because he wanted to see th consequences of that and how people involved in this job are going to react to his failed Job. This is pertaining to the Grizzly Bear Story told by The Expert., since the hunter dose not come to hunt bear , third time . He spares the rich businessman, because he gets what he wants a Honest wife Millions of Dollars and a great life . Killing the businessman would make no purpose
