This is an incredible song. Always loved it. I wonder if it was inspired by Bowie’s Young Americans. The whole spirit and energy of the song, the storytelling, is so similar, but sped up.

Yep. That’s exactly what I thought too. There is a nobility to her simple American dreams in both songs. Similar style of storytelling. Also, Young Americans is almost all about the American girl, not the couple as the title would suggest. One time One night is a another storytelling song about America I really love, too.

Actually Ted has been part of them on stage (concert, TV) since their second album and was known to them since the beginning, also acting as musical director on tours, and Taylor (rhythm guitar) has known them as long. I believe Ted & Taylor shared Ronnie's house back in the early days. Not sure about Jake the bassist but I think he could have known them that long too. The other members wanted a break so they had a choice to either get subs or split up. Tough for their fans if they had split!
