This video was good but it missed a very important point: If bitumen was transported by rail, it could be transported in solid form and not diluted, and solid bitumen can be very easily cleaned up on land and in the water, and does not explode or burn. Given the amount of time that the video spent explaining the dangers of train transportation, it should have made mention of this, and omitting it did not give a full picture of the situation.

At this point, it is pretty much old news since the federal government and the NEB have approved it, both of which incorporated indigenous and local political issues. Both the federal government and NEB agreed that the pipeline was in the best interest of Canada, even after factoring in concerns that certain groups are made worse off. The lawsuits from the indigenous people and BC governments are mostly over political merits. The BC politicians need to show their electorate that they are "doing something" to stop it when in reality they know they can't really do much at this point. The federal government is the one who will have the final say so in regards to the pipeline.
@WilliamWinderG6 жыл бұрын
Exactly! So why is Alberta screaming and threatening? I'm sure it will all go according to plan, just like the Northern Gateway. So Alberta: calm down -- you have won with the NEB on your side!

anonymous user it's clear you have no idea what you're talking about. Phytoremediation can remove hydrocarbons from the soil in just 21 days. Algae cleans tailing pond. 80% of oil sands operations is now done through drilling. Surface mining it long a thing of the past. It requires by law 20yrs of monitoring of reclamation sites before the province will certify it as reclaimed. In 2010 220 hecatres was reclaimed. With 600,000 trees and shrubs planted but it's only 8yrs into the monitoring. 104 hectares have been certified already. 2012 57 hectares were reclaimed with 100,000 trees planted. In total syncrude, by the end of 2016 alone had In total, planted eight million trees on 3,642 hectares of land being reclaimed. Science has now made it faster and cheaper to reclaim land through fungus' and phyto matter that means no more swapping out soil or filling in tailing ponds. Technology has made it so surface mining no longer is necessary and tailing ponds can be renewed without creating more. The Oilsands has greatly reduced it's carbon foot print. 100s of millions have been invested in technology to reduce the oilsands carbon foot print with another 450 mil more slotted to be invested over the next 7 years. As well 2 new upgraders have been recently built and another billion dollars set towards upgraders. To partially refine the bitumen before it enters the pipelines. Heck even now transmountain doesn't carry bitumen. Whole lot of false propaganda being spun and a lot of sheeple without a clue about what really goes on. PS I work for an environmental firm that does land reclamation, monitoring, spill clean ups and environmental impact and safety on pipelines. The oil industry has made huge strides and pipelines are the most environmentally sound form of transportation for oil.

But in order to use a Highway, or get gas at the pump, Natural Gas for your furnace, or propane for your BBQ, or travel by jet, or use plastic, or buy Bananas, Oranges, or anything produced farther away than a Horse and Buggy can deliver, you MUST have a signed #1 card! That will weed out many hypocrites! What card is in our Leader's Wallet? Yes we need MORE safe, new, controlled, maintained, integrity tested, known design-life pipelines! the other thing we should be pushing is that B.C. is it's own biggest polluter, and the most disgusting. They pump more than 80 BILLION liters of raw, untreated sewage (basically everything we flush down the toilet) right into the ocean every year. Cholera is starting to show up in herring roe, I'll never buy any fish I see harvested from B.C. You don't shit where you eat.
@IronMongoose16 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that makes sense. We should either support every project that gets proposed or none, regardless of the operator's safety record. And since the export of the bitumen to China will drive up fuel prices within Canada, make sure there's a box on the card that asks if you support the Kinder Morgan expansion. If you do, they'll charge extra at the pump, on transit, for flights, etc. Makes just as much sense.

Actually no one I know gets paid for protesting, making signs, writing letters, etc. Once in awhile one group looking to start a new action will ask around for donations, and if the rest of us are up for it, we'll put in a few bucks. For instance, our church did a fundraising lunch for Earthkeepers last year. (Look them up. They're sinister radical socialists.) But yeah, fighting the expansion is tiring and expensive. My neighbours and I oppose it because the pipeline and tank farm are a direct hazard to our community. You can walk to the gates of the tank farm from our elementary and back during recess. None of this would be a problem if Kinder Morgan was a responsible pipeline operator. They've repeatedly shown they're not. The last two spills within Burnaby were minor--200,000 to 250,000 liters. One splattered 11 houses with oil, and caused the evacuation of 250 of my neighbours. The next one will be diluted bitumen, which is extremely hazardous. You don't want that raining down on your house. I'm a good neighbour. If Alberta is one too, they'll support us in fighting this project.

We'll go as far as we need to go to stop the expansion of new pipelines. As the report said at the beginning, we have "around 119,000 km" of pipelines running across the country. That's enough. Any new money and new projects for energy have to be in the renewable energy industry. If Germany can do it, Canada can do it too. They're banning cars that run on oil in Paris, France by 2030 and some people want to build new pipelines here? Ridiculous.

@abrahkadabra95016 жыл бұрын
Eusunt Dac Canada is NOT like Germany or France or any other European country. You're living in a dream world if you think Canada can just switch gears and go on renewable energy overnight. 1. Germany and France are about the size of Texas with about three times our population. That means transportation challenges are not even close to being the same. 2. Germany and France are both advanced industrial economies who sell their goods worldwide. Canada has a significant resource based economy with enormous distances to bring its goods to market which is mostly the US. 3. European weather does not even come close to Canadian winters so the need for natural gas is not as great an issue. Even so, Europe imports a significant amount of natural gas from Russia. Canada would face economic Armageddon if there was a sudden shift to renewable only energy without careful long term planning. Pie in the sky environmentalists don't have a clue of what it takes to make the conversion. The ugly truth is that Canada and its natural resources are foreign owned and that's why successive governments have not been able to make coherent policies to protect the environment while gradually converting to renewable energy as Europe is doing.

Its not the truth told that is a problem, its the absence of truth not told that is a critical problem. The Trans Mountain Pipeline was build BEFORE the advent of environmental protection in 1953. There was NO hearings, no consultation with First Nations. Its not the only option, as Alberta stands a very good chance of the Keystone XL pipeline being approved. Based on what even the OIL companies admit, under the present administration, a pipeline to the USA is viable and possible. So, the line to BC is NOT a national necessity, nor is donating 2 Billion to Kinder Morgan, “its face saving Justin” and Notley’s re-election. BC does not owe it to Alberta to maximize its profits (the difference between shipping costs via Keystone XL and Trans Mountain) That is the only difference for Alberta or Canada, however BC would be in peril of what we already know is the most toxic of all oil pumped in a pipeline, if shipped via BC. (Its actually not OIL its dilbit, but the word OIL sells better)
@WilliamWinderG6 жыл бұрын
And, according to E. May, undiluted bitumen is extremely safe to transport by rail and to cleanup in case of a spill (more like and avalanche-- it is rock hard). Why a pipeline? Because KM can get the big bucks out of it. Finally, natives couldn't vote until 1960, after the pipeline was built. Nor could they hire lawyers as individuals. Twinning the pipeline now = twinning the injustice.

In the meantime, they're importing Canadian oil for heavily discounted prices ($35 a barrel), refining it, and selling the refined product to American consumers for top-dollar ($3 a US gallon)!!! So how is helping the environment when no less oil is being produced? And how is this helping Canada? Idiot eco-terrorists are doing NOTHING to help the environment - they're simply handing Canadian market share directly to our US competitors! Thanks eco-terrorists! SMH

The questions not being answered are: How does this additional product going to market affect the atmosphere when it is consumed as a CO2 generating energy? Has anyone done the math if there is sufficient green house gas compensation since it comes from a claimed sustainable source? For any climate change deniers, think back to Grade 7 science on chemical reaction formulas, when a element or compound is added to the equation there is always a reaction to reestablish a balance. Humans have bee using the atmosphere as an emissions waste dump for centuries. Do we really believe such a practice can continue without consequences? Why are we shipping crude when refining in Canada would create more employment in Canada and offer a higher return in the market place? If the rationale of getting oil to the market by sustainable resource extraction, why would that not hold true for refining it under Canadian standards. Sorry PM Trudeau, this decision to build the pipeline does not match your statement of weaning the world from fossil fuels.

They have leaked and are currently leaking, you just don't hear about it. 3- Morgan pipeline is for exportation. Not for Canadian needs. Now to the pro-pipelines... try to imagine a very rich neighbourgh of yours who decides that they will dump their garbage in your backyard and pour oil in your water because his business is going slow and they can't afford their huge pick ups and mercedes anymore. And you have to pay to clean your backyard and your water because your neighbour is a selfish me, myseld and I. How would you feel about that? You would probably think that with the revenue they got in the past they should have managed to do some savings Or at least plan the economic recession that happens EVERY ten years. Congratulations on producing an excellent even-handed explanation on the pros and cons of the Kinder Morgan pipeline. There is one omission that I feel is important to include in the discussion and that is the tripling of the tank farm on Burnaby Mountain. This tank farm is located on the mountainside in a forest and in an earthquake zone...adjacent to several neighbourhoods, an elementary school and Simon Fraser University. Explosions at tank farms are not common place but they are also, not rare. What is unusual is locating them near where people live because if there is an explosion they are catastrophic. The Burnaby Fire department chief has said in the event of an explosion, they are not equipped to fight the blaze which could easily ignite the forest and the surrounding homes. This tank farm in its current and future configurations should not be located in a major population centre.
