Live in the San Francisco Bay Area. Believe it was in early 1980’s that Richard Burton reprised his role abd toured in Camelot and I was fortunate enough to see him performing. Mesmerizing. Yul Brynner did the same in The King & I. Unfortunately I never got to see him performing. Both RIP.

Sometimes in history an actor comes along that makes the role for him and only him. No disrespect to the new kings but really it's all yul
@youandijmh79984 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Yul had a very special balance between the childish side combine with soaring sexual tension and majestic presence that no one could match. It's what the whole play revolves around.

Opera Australia is a repertory company and usually employs their own singers (despite bringing in foreign singers more now). They have had star Asian sopranos and tenors, but not baritones, as far as I know. Besides Teddy is a star in New Zealand and Australia and draws an audience. People want to see him perform.

They can't find an Asian actor to play the King?
@baroniatipu9 жыл бұрын
nobase I understand your dilemma lol but Yul Brynner was not Asian as such; acting as "King Mongkut of Siam" (Google Search) in the King & I :) He was actually Russian...but we love him :D As for Teddy Tahu Rhodes, I think he is part Polynesian? Nah Jokes lol however he is part Maori from New Zealand. Pretty cool eh!!
@nobase9 жыл бұрын
baroniatipu Wow, this is exactly what the Texas director said when he hired a none Asian actor to play the lead. In the end, the public was able to put pressure on him to hire an Asian actor.
@baroniatipu9 жыл бұрын
nobase Oh true lol your kidding me lol :D Why didn't the makeup people give Teddy a a fake tan instead like they did with Yul?? Hopefully the Asian actor could sing in English letalone speak English coz Yul Brynner spoke perfect English hehehe ;D Thanks
@nobase9 жыл бұрын
baroniatipu Back then they weren't a lot of Asian singers/actors. Now we have more Asians singers/actor. The previous Kings were Asian in this production both were strong actors/singers and speak perfect English.

nobase They did manage to find Asian actors for certain dates/states in Australia (in Melbourne there were 3 Asian Kings). “Opera Australia works on the basis of colour-blind casting (as does every opera company in the world). That is, the best artist is chosen for the role, irrespective of race.” Above is a quote re the Teddy's casting from the artistic director of Opera Australia... make of that what you will. Also re Yul's casting, he actually lived in China /w his mother and sister when he was young (he also has a grandmother that is Eurasian)... so he did have a small sort of connection to Asia. Considering the casting directors first considered actors like Rex Harrison, Alfred Drake, and Noel Coward (all White actors), it's rather a miracle Yul was cast in the first place. The only reason why he auditioned (and keep in mind he wasn't a well-known actor before his big break in 'King') was b/c the legendary Mary Martin encouraged him to try out. The casting directors didn't seek him out; he had to persistently put himself out there. Seems like the casting directors at Opera Australia have a lot in common with those 1940s-50s casting directors... the only difference being in 2014 there were (and still are) many more Asian actors available to cast.

Actually one of the best performances of this song I have seen - and I have seen them all. I love the way she acts the lyrics, it brings more meaning to what they say and her voice is very nice too! I don't mind so much that he is not Asian, neither was Yul Brynner, I guess they could have used some make-up but for political correctness making slanty eyes on a caucasian man may give rise to complaints - God forbid!

Actually, Yul Brynner was from Vladivostok, Russia, and he had Tartar/Cossack blood in him, so Brynner was part-Asiatic.
@qutiepie41077 жыл бұрын
Oh, dear. Mr. Rhodes is a fine singer, but he is most definitely not the King of Siam. He can't dance with any power and has an accent that sounds German. What an odd choice. Saw the revival production in Chicago today with a fabulous King, Filipino, I think. I know Yul Brynner was not Asian, but he will always be the King for me.

Actually, Brynner was part Mongol. He was born and grew up in the Far Eastern city of Vladivostock. His father was Swiss-Russian, and his mother was part-Mongol.

The producer when Nureyev played the king forbid Rudy to watch the movie with Yul starring. He didn’t want Rudy to imitate Yul. Rightly so. But Nureyev was no King and his singing left much to be desired. He should have stayed with ballet. But he was aging by that time and with declining health. RIP Rudolph Nureyev.

To Nikki Smith: no it’s not comic relief!! It was a fabulous show that Deservedly won the Helpmann Award for that year. Teddy got mixed reviews re his acting but everyone agreed that his voice was magnificent. Lisa got showered with praise - none of it unearned - and the other cast members were also wonderful. My audience was full of Asian patrons who obviously welcomed the chance to see a majority Asian cast having the chance to showcase their talents and there was a lengthy standing ovation. Anyway, why am I wasting time on you miserable sods
My great Nanna was captured by Russians & brought to Australia. Thi Russians married Vietnamese Asians after that. They married us! Australian Aboriginals.
Jesus. Were there absolutely NO Asian actors available to play the role of the king? Whoever thought this was a great idea?
