He's the illegitimate son of Concubine Yang, princess of the ex-dynasty Sui. His father was a brother of the current Emperor who was beheaded by the latter when he usurped for power. After the current Emperor became king, he took Concubine Yang as his wife. That's how the story goes. She has been hiding her deep hatred and taking the chance to revenge for her dead former husband.

Consort Yang was married to Emperor Taizong's brother, Li Yuanji. But Taizong rebelled against his father and killed his brothers and nephews, forcing his father to abdicate power to him. He did this because his brothers threatened his life, fearing he would be made Crown Prince by Emperor Gaozu. Li Yuanji supported Taizong's brother who was the Crown Prince then, because he thought that brother would name him Crown Prince after he ascended the throne. When Taizong he killed Consort Yang's former husband at the Xuanwu Gate Incident , he took pity on her and took her to his harem. It is possible she was already pregnant with her dead husband's child and the Emperor covered up for her, kinda like Ying Zheng with Gongsun Li from The King's Woman.
