Agree, please do every song from this special because this vintage Elvis with his original band when it was all about the music before Colonel Parker led him down a road of commercializing Elvis and taking the soul out of his music. Please no 70s fat Elvis in the white jump suit live performances. by this time he was drugged out and phoning his performance in and the masses still ate it up. 1956-58 were Elvis' golden years and the special brought all of that back.

Yup. "Trying to Get to You" from the Comeback Special is a MUST. As a die-hard Elvis fan since his beginning, I always imagined (during this performance after having not performed live for 9 years!) he was reliving (in his mind's eye) many of the moments of playful fun and excitement as he and Scotty Moore (on guitar) and Bill Black (on upright bass) were "fooling around" in that little Sun Recording studio creating music that would take the world by storm. They were just youngsters with no idea they were making history. If you haven't seen the Baz Luhrmann biopic, "ELVIS", you're missing out.

Elvis wasn't King of anything but recording other people's music. He couldn't write a grocery list. No talent hack. He made it to fame on his looks and his ability to read and play sheet music with a criminal con artist for a manager driving him harder and harder until he dropped dead.

That song was the moment R&B hatched R&R, & Elvis was the proud papa. Now I suppose they call it 'Rockabilly'. Whatever you call it, it is pure gold. Paul McCartney was a huge Elvis fan. I'm trying to remember where I read that this was the first Rock & Roll song he learned to play. I know he said he practiced singing it like Elvis. Pulled it off, too. There's a YT video (just the music, actually)of him covering this song on an album called 'Good Rockin' Tonight'. It's awesome.Tom Petty's on the album as well, covering Elvis' version of 'Blue Moon Of Kentucky'. You ought to find that one & react to it. All hail the King.

Elvis reunited here with Scotty Moore who also played guitar on the original recording back in 1954 when a young, inexperienced Elvis walked into the studio and started singing his favorite R&B, blues, and country tunes. The recording of this song is the one that first caught the ears of the public in and around Memphis and set him on his way.

LOVE the Elvis 68 comeback special. EVERY song from the special is great. Favorite is Trying to Get to You but they're all golden. Lot of his playful personality in his songs at the 68 Comeback Special: Trouble/Guitar Man; Lawdy Miss Clawdy. Tearjerker for me was Always on My MInd (not from the 68 special). Believe that one came out right after Priscilla. My mother was huge, huge, huge Elivs fan. She wanted to console him :) Cried for a week straight when he died. There are so many *incredible* songs by Elvis. My favorite is "Surrender". Elvis has so many different vocalizations and tones, and that song is short and sweet and showcases them beautifully. :) However, every single song on the 30 #1 Hits are worth a listen to at some point. When I go on roadtrips, I have a playlist with Elvis and Patsy Cline that takes me right back to my childhood. Driving around and singing along with my Dad! Usually sitting on a milk crate between the two front seats, his arm was my seatbelt. It is truly a miracle nothing bad ever happened. Hahaha

"Trying to get you" on 68' comeback special. Even though it was released in 1956, every girl with their sweetheart off to Vietnam was listening to that song. Funny story about this song: I got an Elvis album for Christmas, early 70's, don't remember the exact year, but, this song was on it. Since my mother was an Elvis fan, she let me play it on her stereo system. As we sat down to eat, my mother said "Oh!, I meant to make some coleslaw!" That was the exact moment this song kicked in with Elvis singing "Well, that's alright lil' mama!" We all had a good laugh and to this day, if something happens someone will say "That's alright, Mama!" One aspect of Elvis you still haven't touch is his gospel. He won Grammy's for those. One of my favorites: How Great Thou Art. I would love to hear other RSR family tell their favorites.

In Elvis related news this week: Congratulations to Barry Manilow who on Thursday broke Elvis Presley's long standing record of 636 performances on the International Showroom stage at the Westgate Las Vegas (formerly the Las Vegas Hilton when Elvis was alive). That record held for 46 years until Thursday night with Manilow's performance #637 of his show "The Hits Come Home", recently voted by USA Today as the #1 Headliner Residency in Las Vegas for the third year in a row. If I’m not mistaken, this is the first time Elvis performed with Scotty Moore (lead guitar) and DJ Fontana (drummer but playing the guitar case in this) for quite a few years (they appeared in some of his early films along with Bill Black who played the stand up bass but had sadly passed away before this tv programme and I’m also pretty sure that the recording sessions for this 1968 Christmas Special (better known as the ‘68 Comeback) were the last time he performed with them.

Your comments about his voice are spot on. These days singers can get away with being not so great and still sound good on recordings because there's a lot of studio tricks and technology that can be used to cover up shortcomings. But back in the old days that stuff didn't exist so a singer had to actually sound good live in person or they would not sound good on the recordings.
@Howdeejustmee
@Howdeejustmee Жыл бұрын
🙌 exactly, that’s spot on, I say that all the time. Anyone could appear to sing well, even if they’re not that good, with the technology we have today, but back then you actually had to have talent to be famous. Also, I’m not some old person that’s saying this just because they miss the old days so they hate this generation and insult todays music. I’m saying this because it’s just the doggone truth. I’m a teen that wishes she was born decades earlier🥲

So glad to see you reacting to more Elvis. I remember being glued to the TV and watching this with my family in Dec 1968 when I was 8. My mom, older sister, and I all loved him. Definitely live performances are best because you get to see his personality shining through in the performance.

A perfect example of how it started for him. Minus the Bass. A Rythm and Blues song done in just a little different way. If you listen to the originalScotty Moore's lead Guitar gave it a Country feel to it, Bill Black's(had he been there)Bass gave it the Rythme and Blues feel as a Backdrop to Elvis' Rythme Guitar and incredible voice made it Rock and Roll.

All Elvis songs should really be listened to live. He had so much personality that he put into every one.

they are songs Elvis sang, and NOT! Elvis songs. The songs he just sang belong to the writers.

The King should ALWAYS be watched live whenever possible! His stage presence, his spell-binding charisma, is at LEAST 50% of the reason for his phenomenal popularity. There's never been anything quite like him as a performing artist on stage and probably never will be.

Wow. I remember this special. 1968 My father was a huge fan. He and Elvis wee the same age. Elvis had finally finished his 7 year movie contract and wanted to refocus on music. This special was his first live performance in almost a decade. I was 13. If you can ever find it you should check out the full show.

I'm so glad you reacted to this footage from his '68 Comeback Special. For this TV-show in Elvis' black leather outfit, there is a sit down as well as a stand up part. Not only from the waist up, lol. And yes, do "Devil In Disguise". That song even triggers the Elvis impersonator in me.

In the 70's my older sister and I were hooked on Elvis. His music and his movies. Our parents would let us stay up late on Friday and Saturday nights to watch his movies, if they were on. We loved all of his movies, but my favorite was Girl Happy and my sister's was Flaming Star.

Finally! "That's alright Mama" was how it all started for Elvis, recorded at Sun Studio. One of his best songs I think. Keep up the good work, and do some more Live with the King. 😊👍

Notice to all: if you ever buy the DVD set of this, make sure you get the one that features the UNEDITED acoustic sets, in the order he played them. Its so crazy. He begins the show forgetting lyrics, playing sloppy, maybe a little bit "influenced", but as he finds his true love again-- his music-- its like movie Elvis disappears and the freaking KING is being reborn right before your eyes. It gives me chills just typing about it.
