Trent good job. Im on my second day sober. They said takes two months to completely clean out your liver and get your body rejuvenated. It's hard it was painful even the first day not drinking. It's funny how much better you feel when you don't drink. I'm just resetting so that I can get control over this addiction. Even the whiskey tribe does 7-day dry weeks to reset. Probably not enough but that's something. Shoot one day I feel like I need a whiskey after for a reward😂. I'm going to shoot for 2 months

Four Roses is a solid bourbon, but from what I've seen and heard it often doesn't do well in blinds. I've seen other channels talk about that very issue. Something about the Four Roses profile not holding up in flights when compared to other distilleries. However, on its' own, Four Roses is great. I also quite like their Small Batch Select and I just got an OESO store pick that is fantastic. I did a blind flight with that OESO against Maker's 46 Cask, Belle Meade Reserve, and Doc Swinson's Toasted Oak. The OESO was the clear winner which I was happy about since it's the most expensive bottle in that line up. 😄

don't bother it's a bit disappointing. sure the nose is nice but the palette is "meh". It's not bad by any means, it just doesn't feel very 'strong' or stands out in any way. It tastes very mellow/mild to me and I've seen several channels now state that the regualr woodford is better than the double oaked (despite the fact that the double costs way more). 29:10 From what I understand about double oaking (at least Woodford Reserve and Old Forester's process) is the second barrelling imparts the flavors it does *because* they dilute the whiskey after removing it from the first barrel and it enters the second at a lower proof. The increased water content supposedly draws more sugars out of the wood than it would otherwise (as you know if you've tried dissolving granulated sugar in an old fashioned, alcohol doesn't dissolve sugar well) which is why it only needs to be in the second barrel for a few months to have profound additions to the flavor. Making a cask strength WFDO or 1910 wouldn't work, at least not in the same way.
@floz336 Жыл бұрын
Do you have a source for this? I'd love to know if this is 100% the case! Because the low proof has bugged me previously and I'd love to have a solid explanation for it.
@troybornhorst9173 Жыл бұрын
Nah. Alcohol is the primary solvent/carrier of flavors. Benefit of lower entry proof is that you’re not diluting it at bottling. Water will get some flavor, yes…but I think alcohol is what delivers the flavor.
@Guy_GuyGuy Жыл бұрын
@@floz336 Old Forester claims it on their product page for their 1910. “this unique expression of Old Forester has undergone a second barreling, granting it exceptional character, a smooth and sweet flavor and a clean, crisp finish. Entering the second barrel at a low 100 proof allows more of the sweet wood sugars to dissolve into the whiskey. 1910 Old Fine Whiskey is the fourth and final expression of the Whiskey Row Series, presented at 93 proof.“ Theoretically though, since they say it enters the second barrel at 100 proof and probably dilute it down to 93 afterwards, there’s no reason they couldn’t make a 100 proof 1910.
@troybornhorst9173 Жыл бұрын
@@Guy_GuyGuy yeah. I should add that table sugar will dissolve better in pure water than pure alcohol…I don’t know about wood sugars in a mix of water/ethanol. But my gut feel says this is marketing….and like you…I assume they dilute it to get more bottles per barrel and to make it ‘smoother’ for the average consumer. Also, a second barrel would add bitterness as well as sweetness. Maybe the higher proof was deemed too bitter for the masses. I don’t really know, I just enjoy speculating. Cheers!

I recently got my first Four Roses single barrel and I wasn't really impressed. I think I like Four Roses Small Batch better. I saw another blind where 1792 Small Batch beat all other 1792s and I think that is quite telling, as in to say the "blend" that goes into the "small batches" has to meet a certain flavor profile whereas the single barrels are just whatever they are by themselves. Four Roses is definitely a "lighter" bourbon as well, as you guys talk about.

I'm really surprised Michters US1 Bourbon hasn't make this list. Unless in your area it's the $50 range. In my area I get it, all day long, $36 but most have it at $45-49.

I enjoy Woodford DO but agree a higher proof would be worth 100 bucks for me at least.

Do most people warm up their palette before a tasting? Something like a familiar whiskey to get adjusted? Every time I have a pour, the first couple sips all taste bitter no matter the quality.

Four Roses was disadvantaged coming in after the 120 proof hitter shocked your palates. High proofs always do well for me in blinds, but drinking a full glass and subtle flavors like Four Roses has do better
