Jimmy Martin was a friend of mine. One day, I went to his house to visit and he was Jimmy Martin was a friend of mine. One day, I went to his house to visit and he was stirring up a pot full of chicken gizzards. He asked me if I wanted any and I said I had never had chicken gizzards before. He said, “ well, there’s probably not enough to go around anyway .” One of my most cherished photographs is of Jimmy and myself when he was under hospice care in his home. He was rail thin but had that big Jimmy Martin smile on his face. I drew a couple of different portraits of him as gifts. About three years before his passing I wrote a poem about him titled the ballad of Jimmy Martin. Tom T Hall read it at his funeral.

Yea im 65 years old and through the years im beginning to realize that the grand ole opry has shot them selves in the foot many times. They turned away Elvis and Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard. Told Buck Owens he wasnt country enough. Fired Hank Williams. Turned away Dwight Yoakum and list goes on and on. As much as I have listened to the Opry all my lifeI know they have to much influence on country music in general and should let the fans have a little say so. Many a child has grown up trying to sound like Jimmy Martin. Bill Monroe invented it but Jimmy perfected it!!!!!!!

I agree,I think its a disgrace and shame on The Country Music Hall of Fame that Jimmie Martin,along with many others, has been overlooked, even snubbed, by them. Put the vote to the fans! see what answer you get. I live in England and am suprised how the USA does not seem to value the treasures they have! immie Rodgers House (yodellers paradise ) is in private hands, not a national monument. I can tell you in England such an important, historic building would be preserved for the nation, not left to the whim of individuals. But it seems Jimmie Martin has upset some people of small mind and delicate feelings who let personal opinion override good judgement. Man up and do the right thing.
@bigmrclean10 жыл бұрын
The Opry didn't put up with any drinking and bunch of cursing and acting like fools. Hank Williams is another example of what happens when you stray away and start acting like that. We need more like the Opry. I love Jimmy's guitar pickin' and singing but when I hear him on stage singing Gospel Music and then hearing him use the Lords Name in Vain I have a big problem with that.

Mick it is a big deal. A very big deal. Glad mac made it. He deserves it. Jimmy Martin had gobs of talent. He was a very troubled man and that's why the opry never accepted him. His music and pickin was more than good enough to be on the opry.

+richard s Yeah but those that listen to and feel the music will know that no one sang it better or more pure than Jimmy Martin. Not saying there were not some others as good but Jimmy sang from his heart to your heart. And you can be in any hall but it don't make that happen.
@Hearsticles8 жыл бұрын
Cursing, taking the Lord's name in vain, spittin', roughhousing, that's all part of the true spirit of bluegrass. That's why there are so many songs about rambling, about killings, about tragedy, about heartbreak. If you don't understand that, I don't know why you listen to this kind of music in the first place. A good, old school bluegrass man is one who raises hell and still goes to church on Sunday. Maybe you're just not from the right generation or haven't been exposed to our kinds of people to know the truth of that.

We live in a world that in constantly changing, nothing is permanent. What is "in" today is "out" tomorrow. Only the Creator remains permanent never changing with time and never being effected by things around Him. We celebrate the Creator's stability by ensuring that His written names or anything else that represents Him, is not destroyed." The issue of Martin being on the Opry had initially to do with Bill Monroe demanding Martin never go on the Opry because of his objections to Martin's long-standing affair with Monroe's daughter Melissa while Martin was married. Martin knew that fromt he gitgo but never talks about it in public, This tended to escalate as Martin's abusive behavior with his wife and children became public knowledge especially in Nashville. As the years went on Martin's anger and paranoia over this issue led him to angry and abusive to others on stage. In several of his guest spots on the Opry he had to physically dragged off the Opry Stage. Not saying that other musicians with worse behavior work on the Opry, but his initial direct confrontation with one of the main powers of Bluegrass, and then his public campaign denouncing the Opry did not help him. Not including him in the Hall of fame is a disgrace.

Hello Mr. Day ! The name of the song about which you were inquiring is “Lonesome Prison Blues” and is on Jimmy’s album Free Born Man . Not only is the melody the same as “ Hills of Roane County “ aka “Prisoner of Roane County “ but it IS the same only with a few word changes . For instance, the name Willie becomes Jimmy, and the town of Sneadsville ( Jimmy‘s birthplace ) is mentioned . The song is available for your listening pleasure on KZbin. Jimmy was a friend of mine. You can see my comment somewhere on the screen . The name is Steve Cline ....as in Patsy . No relation.
