The Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) is the largest lizard species in the world, native to several Indonesian islands including Komodo, Rinca, and Flores. Known for its impressive size, reaching up to 10 feet in length and weighing around 150 pounds, these carnivorous reptiles are apex predators in their habitat. They have powerful legs, a keen sense of smell, and venomous glands in their jaws that contain anticoagulants to weaken prey. Komodo dragons primarily feed on deer, pigs, and birds, and are known for their solitary nature and ability to swim and run short distances at speeds up to 13 mph. Classified as vulnerable due to habitat loss and human activity, they are protected under Indonesian law.
