Originally recorded 9 May 1970 at Morgan Studio 1, Willesden, UK for The Kinks classic ‘Lola Versus Powerman And The Moneygoround, Part One’ original album sessions. A concept album ahead of its time, it’s a satirical appraisal of the music industry, including song publishers, unions, the press, accountants, business managers, and life on the road.
Remastered by expert Kinks engineer Andrew Sandoval, overseen by Kinks frontman Ray Davies. ‘Lola’, which reached the #9 in the US, #2 in the UK and Germany, was the Kinks' biggest single success since ‘Sunny Afternoon’ in 1966 and marked the start of big comeback Stateside. The track, written by Ray Davies, allegedly details a romantic encounter between a young man and a possible trans-gender person whom he meets in a club in Soho, London.

I was 25 when this song came out, and at age 78 I still love it to this day. I’m just a year younger than Sir Raymond Douglas Davies, and I feel blessed to have shared a generation with him and The Kinks along with many other great bands from that era. I’d like to do some things over in my personal life, but musically I wouldn’t trade that time period for anything. Music has never been more fun than it was in the 60’s and 70’s. It was a great time to be young.

I was born in 1961, in the back streets of Leeds. My sisters were Beatles but fans two of my older brothers played guitar and they were Rolling Stones devotees, I always preferred The Kinks but it wasn't me who controlled the Dancette record player... just had to get out the house. Really? Here's a nice summation of the Kinks from Wikipedia: The Kinks have had five Top 10 singles on the US Billboard chart. Nine of their albums charted in the Top 40. In the UK, they have had seventeen Top 20 singles and five Top 10 albums. Four Kinks albums have been certified gold by the RIAA and the band have sold 50 million records worldwide. Among numerous honours, they received the Ivor Novello Award for "Outstanding Service to British Music." In 1990, the original four members of the Kinks were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as well as the UK Music Hall of Fame in November 2005. (Plus, Ray was knighted a few years ago.) Underrated? Not by a long shot.

I don't think I've ever heard a song by a mainstream band that's about finding a trans woman attractive, about delighting in our sexuality. What lol? No, Lola is clearly a man. He even says outright that Lola is a man. Yes, he may have found her attractive, but then he found out Lola is a guy. That is why he "shoved her away and walked to the door." He was proud that Lola stood up for himself and shoved back, showing Lola doesn't take shit, but he also clearly states that there is nothing that is going to be happening between the two now that he knows Lola is a man. The song isn't about Trans rights or acceptance or anything like that. It is just a song about the first time a country boy gets to the big city and encountered something he never would have seen where he is from and how he goes about processing that awkward turn of events. Lou Reed did the same thing.

But more than that, he says "that's the way that I want it to stay" after looking her in the eyes, knowing what she's got in her pants. More than that, when she continues to come on to him at the end, there is no rejection in the lyrics. He calls her "my Lola". You're right that it's not about trans rights. It's about a country boy discovering a gorgeous woman in the big city. Said woman just happens to have a low voice and is strong and is probably trans.

I saw the kinks in concert.. So glad i did... the Give The People What They Want tour. i wore the tee shirt with the short sleeves rolled up. I seen them live in 1986 and when they sung Lola, you could hear the crowd singing 10 km away. The Kinks where the backing band to ZZ Top and were way better than the band they were backing. I feel very lucky to have been able to see some of these great bands live.

Brilliant vid of an everlasting brilliant song. It is probably my most favourite song - even tho I didn't really know what exactly it was about for a while. The tune is very catchy and the more I learned the lyrics, the more I loved the song. Well done to Ray Davies and the Kinks!

This was very educational for me as a young teen in the late 70's. Ahead of it's time in some ways. And I like the way they leave the ending ambiguous...sometimes that's the best art.

You only hear cherry cola in the British version because the BBC in 70s wasn’t allowed advertise and they thought they may get sued for advertising Coca Cola of well song saying Coca Cola.
