The Kinks played Pop and Rock for two decades before they jumped on the Punk bandwagon. Iggy and the Stooges played Punk from the start of their career in the late 60s and never stopped. The Stooges are widely credited with giving birth to the genre.

@@josephramone5805 The Stooges were still influenced by the Kinks and Sonics and would have never existed without them, this kind of stuff is proto-punk and yes I feel like the Stooges were the first legit punk band

I saw the Kinks multiple times in the 80s and they put on some of the best shows I've ever seen, as Ray is especially great at doing callbacks with the audience to get everybody involved, and he and Dave clowned around with mock fighting/bickering. On bass was the late, great Jim Rodford, one of the founding members of Argent. He had been on tour with Rod Argent and Colin Blunstone and "The Zombies", and then I was surprised that he didn't appear one night. Turned out that he'd taken a fall at home and left us, which put a damper on my day. Ian Gibbons on the keyboards has also since left us.

When they came back in the early 90s they were really something else. They looked great and played great and to tell the truth handed alot of the current bands their asses - they really made inroads in making harder rock music and their music fitted perfectly with the music trends of the time then.

In the early 80's the original British Invasion was still going strong and it felt that the musical world I had grown up on would go on forever. The Kinks, Animals, Stones, Who, were all putting out music as good as they ever had. This recording is easily as good as anything created by the punk movement, especially looking back on it now. It had energy and attitude. Not nearly the best The Kinks ever did, but still great to hear on the radio.

@ijeff20056 жыл бұрын
Definitely agree. The Kinks in the 80's seemed so young and vibrant compared to other 60's rockers. Perhaps it had to do with the lack of respect they preceived throughout their career and the fact that they still had a hunger that many others of their era did not have.

Yea the current bands of the time were just not plugged into what came before or didnt give a damn, they really treated older artists like bowie or david byrne etc like shit. Total revelation compared to what happens today, if an older artist is at a gig - they will pull him up on stage to pay tribute and sing a song together, not back then.

I tell my punk rock friends that The Kinks invented punk rock the first time they slit the cone in amplifiers to get distortion dot-dot-dot but nothing is more punk rock than taking your old songs and destroying them with admiration in contempt at the same time dot-dot. I used to not like this song because I thought they just weren't being creative and copying their old stuff and then I realized that was the point and as someone who writes music and frequently wants to rewrite their old songs and different versions, why shouldn't you? Put it out in all the versions not.. Write it produce it and then destroy it I love it
